No its not that. I love Face ID before the pandemic. Its fine with me now. It doesn't intrude with my use cases, I stop using my phone while I'm in the store its fine with me.

I can see for those who need to wear mask during Touch ID would be a welcome feature, but that's not the case with me.

EDIT: You know where I wish we had Face ID? On the Mac. I swear either its the lack of humidity but I can't unlock my phone 30% of the time and I think because my hands are too dry.

My wife has sweaty hands and I swear its hilarious! Touch ID fails her 80% of the time. Its actually funny to see. Getting a Face ID phone was a game changed haha for her.

Yeah, I loved TouchID when it came out because it worked 75% of the time or better. Now I am used to FaceID working 100% of the time. When TouchID on my IPA2 fails it really annoys me and it seems like it fails better than 50% of the time.

My MAC auto-unlocks with my Apple watch and that was really annoying when it started failing due to a software update .

There is zero reason for Apple not to include both. It comes down to giving your customers a choice. If they don't add it to the iPhone 13 its just either laziness or stubbornness.

We are currently being vaccinated in the UK and it looks reasonably promising that by Easter the vast majority of the population will be vaccinated. There’s no need for apple to regress back to touch Id in the iPhone.

I know its not easy to find the perfect biometric authentication solution, but not Iris ID, no way do i want any kind of infra red beams etc to be fired directly into my retinas.
Well, is already used in my work (3000 people daily), so I guess that it's safe.

So, we’ve been mandated to wear masks since February/March here in NY and I’ve had an iPhone 11 Pro Max in April. It really does not bother me to take the 2 seconds it takes to put in my passcode. I don’t get how “inconvenient” that is, it’s 2 seconds. The same amount of time it takes to unlock with Face ID or with your finger. Makes no difference and when people are complaining how “inconvenient” this is goes to show first world problems. Especially since years ago, passcodes/passwords were the only security measure phones had. We’ve dealt with it then fine, I’m sure we can handle dealing with it now. Besides, in the winter time when you have gloves, Touch ID becomes obsolete lol so either way, there are things stopping us from using these security measures but at least there is a way for us to get into our phones. No big deal, in my opinion.

Stay safe and stay healthy.

I’m in the UK and Clinically Extremely Vulnerable. The calculators tell me that I’m likely to receive all of my vacdonations by the end of May 2021. Given that I’m high up on the priority list I.e. group 4, there is no way that the majority will be vaccinated by Easter. Fairly academic regarding Face ID because I’m in the shielded group so don’t get out and don’t need a mask because I have no external contact

Good to hear. I’ll visit y’all!

It’s people who have to wear a mask out doors likely for hours that it’s annoying to do so. I understand what their position is.

I work in the health system so I’m probably get it before others in some ways but I’ll wear mask until there no reported cases in the USA for 6 months! Wearing a mask is no big deal.

Considering that this is Apple we're talking about, the things that make the most sense are the things that they won't do.

The solution would be to have both methods, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost.

IHS estimates the TouchID sensor to be less than $5 of the bill of materials. FaceID is around $15 in components.

I don’t think we’ll ever get dual forms of authentication, Apple‘s philosophy is not to provide choices

Having the option for both wouldn't be a regression.

There are many times in a day I want to unlock my phone while it’s laying down flat on a table or desk without lifting it up. Touch ID will be very helpful for this. Examples are when I’m cooking and when I’m working. Also when I leave the phone with landscape mode watching a video. Once I come back after pausing it for a while, I wish to be able to unlock it just the way it is left with Touch ID instead of tilting my head 180 degrees to use Face ID or lifting it up and put it down again to continue watching the video. I will be very grateful if Touch ID can be added back!

A cut out over the power button. Case manufacturers have been doing this for a longtime on Androids that have Fingerprint Scanners in the Power Buttons, a few Sony phones have had this.
I have a Sony Xperia something or other from Work and the fingerprint sensor on the power button works fantastic. Apple really needs to incorporate this feature into the 2021 iPhone.

I have 11Max with Face-ID and and iPad with Touch-ID. I like the Face-ID much better and it is much more reliable in opening device or opening app. I understand the issue with face masks and again, in one sense that depends upon environment. If I'm walking somewhere when no close people around I don't have an problem lowering mask a bit to open phone. I also volunteer where I have to have mask and gloves so there is no good solution.
If touch were as reliable to me as face then either but also since I live in Maine where gloves are worn it is almost the face as face covered with mask.

I think Apple has been too arrogant to cut off touchid completely while many other phones keep a easy virtual touchid under the screen which I like a lot. I believe mask will stay for years even after COVID, so touchid would be quite convenient in many cases. It's so amazing Apple marketing dept is spending millions of dollars to do research/VOC while still not getting the true insights and actual needs from customers....

Doesn’t adding an alternative appearance with your mask on get around that? I keep meaning to try it but haven’t got round to it yet

I’ve tried to get my phone to learn my face with a mask on however I haven’t been successful. Mine unlocks about 1 out of every 4 times. I think it’s due to the regular masks I use that sometimes are more stretched out than others making it hard for the phone to unlock with Face ID.

Thanks for the response. I’ll give mine a go later just to see

Post back your results, what type of mask, etc if you can. Will be interested to know how it turns out.
Nope it was having none of it. My normal mask is a dark green London Irish (rugby team) with club badge on it. Phone just said something was obstructing my face
