It's 8PM where I'm at. I know the day has just started for the majority of you guys. So are you watching the game from work? Or did you take a day off :)

Streaming from the internets! I picked Germany as one of the teams to make it to the finals but today I'm cheering for the US.

while agree that other behavior can be technically more dangerous, i do think this goes well beyond the pale of what can be tolerated.
it IS more uncivilized than -for example- fist fight (for example), and it can only be framed as an action aimed at hurting an adversary, while some other behaviors can be a little more subtle and/or disguised as game incidents.

besides, if someone were to walk to another player and straight punch them in the face (and this being their THIRD time something like that occurred) i believe you would see some equally harsh punishment.

i think a clean 1 year ban from all activities would have been fair.
one full season to go to a therapist and get treatment.

I'm entirely with you on this, and I don't equate biting - which is an ugly and vicious assault which actually invades the body's boundaries in a way a punch does not - with a punch. Besides, looking at the video of this (and similar incidents) the normal response to a punch is to hit back; if you are bitten, you tend to be stunned with appalled shock.

The response of the Uruguayan media has been unsurprisingly wilfully myopic, claiming, for instance, that this is a set-up, or an attempt to frame a gifted player, when, in fact, it is nothing of the sort.

I'm with DP; while this is - by the notoriously flexible standards of FIFA - a fairly hefty punishment, I, for one, would have welcomed a complete ban of a year for the guy. This is disgusting behaviour, and is repellant and nasty in a way a fisticuff is not. Besides, this guy clearly has what are termed 'issues', and 'issues' with more than anger-management.

However, nothing I have read suggests that a transfer would not be possible during that time period, and, this has been touched on by the English language media.

No, I don't think I see an elbow blow against the head, happening completely on purpose and almost every single game, any less vicious than that. Actually I'd personally prefer the first over the latter if my opponent on the pitch gave me a choice.

To single out the one without ever adressing the other, far more common and also more dangerous behavior (we see broken noses or other fractures at the head every other gameweek) isn't Fifa at it's best. Didn't question his ban though.

Twietee: I am not in any way condoning a fist-fight on the field under any circumstances, but the on field antics and assaults - both verbal and physical - of a psychologically disturbed creature such as Suarez need to be addressed.

In truth, the man is a very nasty piece of work with a bizarre persecution complex and a bottomless sense of entitlement. Besides, a bite invades and violates a person's boundaries in a way that a punch - which is also shocking - does not. Fist-fights lead to responses of disgust and dismay; biting someone (as an adult) as part of an assault leads to visceral shudders of utter revulsion - I still remember the reaction to Mike Tyson's vicious behaviour.

Despite the video evidence, and the clear shock of the Italian defender, I had feared that as the competition was - is - taking place in South America, coupled with the vigorous lobbying campaign undertaken on behalf of Suarez by the Uruguayan football authorities - (and the media across the continent) - that FIFA, perhaps characteristically, would let him off lightly with a token, or notional wrist tap form of punishment.

Personally, I would have supported a ban of a year for this sort of conduct, but I am pleased to see that the gravity of what he did has at least been acknowledged by FIFA with what - by their more usual dismal standards - would be seen as a hefty ban. In any case, it is not as though he does not have 'previous' form with this sort of behaviour.

Wow. Beto (Portugal's GK) got so mad when he got replaced. He was literally crying. Final score was 2:1 for Portugal. Ronaldo finally scored in this game. Doesn't matter as they're out. So is Ghana.

Most likely Belgium, could be Algeria. Depends on results of this afternoon's games.

EDIT: Algeria would have to win and Belgium lose for it to be anyone but Belgium.

just in:
suarez was suspended for 9 international games, starting immediately, and 4 months of any FIFA-related activity, including club games.
he will be back to football in october, thus missing both premier league and champions league games.
apparently the block extends to administrative aspects, so liverpool may not be able to sell him. he can't even get into any stadiums in this four months. not sure if it implies he will have to forego summer training with the team as well.

He also got a 100,000 CHF fine.

I agree with scepticalscribe, but would go further.
Biting people can transmit diseases! Its a serious crime and assault!

This dude has biten other players 3 ****ing times now!
There is only one reasonable answer. A lifetime ban!

Its beyond me, how FIFA lets some dude run around on the field and literally bite the players!! Wtf!!

And yet he claims he cares what his kids think about him. Doubtful.

I was able to watch the second 15 minutes of extra time and the penalty kicks. I have to say, I was on the edge of my seat for the PKs. Very exciting!

Very exciting all the way to the end! Last kick needed, love those. Im expecting to see more of these!

So glad for Brazil, now I hope Colombia can knock out Uruguay, which will be more likely now that they don't have Suarez to munch on people.

I would kinda like to see Uruguay win, as I think that would twist the knife in Suarez a little bit more.
