The setup is a repeat of phablets sentiment before Apple went there: "stupid, abominations, fragmentation, 99% don't want, one-handed-use, pants with bigger pockets, man purses." Then Apple embraced them and it was "shut up and take my money" and "how did we ever get by with those puny screens."

The Appledom always hates what Apple doesn't have for sale right now... but then readily flips flops once Apple DOES embrace it. This will be no different. The obvious benefit of having BOTH an iPhone and an iPad in ONE device cannot be missed. IMO: ALL apps are better with more screen R.E. It's why I opt to use a cellular iPad Mini with VOIP app and buds to double as my phone now. What can it NOT do that iPhone can? Fit into a pocket.

This one is going to be swift and incredible to watch

Suddenly the most vociferous detractors will be ALL IN on these and Apple's variant will, of course, be class leading in every possible way and "BLOW AWAY" the competition (in narrative at least, if not specs/features/actual offering)

This is, to your point, as predictable as the sun rising and setting

😂

Nearly invisible display crease is still a crea

You have your own camera bump? 🤔
Either way I’m sure you look great just the way you are.
I very rarely use the camera on my iPhone. Ideally I would like an option to have no bump like we had in the early years of the iPhone.

Imagine paying for a phone, with a "killer feature" that starts wearing out the phone on day one.

Enjoy the crease and inevitable distortion/cracks.
I’ve not seen any definitive research on how long these folding phones last before any cracks or creases appear.

Consumers look at performance first and foremost. They want to know if the CPU/GPU they buy is not only the fastest but will age well in three or four years.

Until a competitor can come close to touching the performance and efficiency of Apple Silicon all these design fads are just don’t sell well. They are doing Nokia Ngage level designs because they can’t compete against Apple Silicon.
If that is your thing then have a look at the new processor in the Samsung S25 :)

Like with anything else in life, a lot of it depends on the end user. I had a Z Flip 4 for 27 months. I used it caseless, changed out the screen protector once, and never had any issues with durability. One of the bosses where I work went through three (always in a case) in less than a year from rough handling/dropping.

I wish I was pedantic enough to keep track of the usernames of people who say features like this are bad, or say stuff like “If you want X,Y,Z get an android” and see if they make use of said features when iOS incorporates them. But im far too lazy for that

Had the first one. It's a great phone. My only gripe is with the size of the camera module. I couldn't fit a card holder on the OnePlus Open. This one looks maybe a bit smaller, but it's still gigantic imo.

Still one of the best folding phones. Definitely nicer than any of Samsung's offerings.

It's not a crease (meaning if you pull the display glass off there will be no actual crease in the ultra thin glass) as much as it is more of an extremely shallow valley that is now getting close to being imperceptible to the eye and to the touch, because we don't currently possess the technology to put hardware behind that part of the display like we can underneath the rest of the display, because that is where the hinge mechanism resides.

What’s this obsession with thing thinness making all smartphone makers go crazy? Give us larger camera sensors, better battery, sturdy phones we’re not worried about using.
Well as technology advances, you can have all those things in a smaller and thinner device. Imagine if people complained about TV's getting thinner and we were still stuck with huge CRT tv's lol.

I think the skepticism and concern is because people tend to be just barely "ok" with their current iPhone battery life

It's hard to see how making them even thinner is going to do anything but make that even worse

It's a valid concern

Meanwhile, iPhones get a mm smaller bezel and a titanium frame upgrade.

FFS Tim, don’t be such a tight ass. Where are all those innovative projects in the pipeline you keep talking about?

It really seems to me like the new product "magic" is all but gone.

This, of course, isn't super surprising since Tim is not a product guy and one can only keep the trajectory going for so long without product driven leadership.

I'm honestly more interested now to see how long this goes before a shake up

Your average consumer wants something that is cute, they have no idea what a CPU/GPU is.

In fairness battery tech is advancing. Some of the new thinner and smaller phones have more power. 5000mah was standard enough, now it seems to be moving towards 6000 for standard flagships.

Apple should be at least able to keep the same battery life, even if it is thinner.

This looks awesome. I wonder what the battery life is like on something so thin. Does the USB C port run all the way to the edges?

We'll see

Color me skeptical on this point

Once the crease gets figured out watch Apple come out with a foldable which will just take off. It's not necessarily the size thats the issue, it's the screen quality and crease. The tech is just not ready.

2024 released now going global Huawei Mate XT Ultimate 3.6 mm at thinnist point beats these fat phones and also provides instead of the square unfolded screen a more wide big tablet screen. One needs to install three files to get the Google Play to work, but that pho e is fantastic.
I am waiting for the competition and the Ultimate 2...

Thinness:
1990’s - supermodels
2025’s - smartphones
In the case of foldables thinness is imperative. The whole point of foldables is convenience. You don’t want to be carrying around a thick brick in your pocket.
