It really seems to me like the new product "magic" is all but gone.

This, of course, isn't super surprising since Tim is not a product guy and one can only keep the trajectory going for so long without product driven leadership.

I'm honestly more interested now to see how long this goes before a shake up

As long as it's "another record quarter" every quarter, nobody with any power to drive tangible change wants to shake the tree. When Apple finally rolls over, change will follow.

Sort of the "keep drinking cognac and smoking cigars up on A deck for now" routine 'eh?

Thin was in 10 years ago and EVERYONE griped about it - then thicker phones were the new thing. Now thin is in again!
Guess what will be the new thing a few years from now? Yep. Thicker phones

You can't really compare this to a normal phone. This one folds and therefore needs to be quiet thin to be about the same size as a phone that doesn't fold when folded

This is the first non-Apple phone I've ever seriously considered. I may order one to play with without cell service just to see if I can wrap my smooth brain around Android and seeing what IRL stuff I'll actually miss. I'm a big Apple ecosystem person, so I fear it will be "a lot." But we shall see.

Once the crease gets figured out watch Apple come out with a foldable which will just take off. It's not necessarily the size thats the issue, it's the screen quality and crease. The tech is just not ready.

Oppo has also tried to reduce the visibility of the display’s crease. It is there, and it is visible, but only when it catches the light at just the right angle, and it’s almost impossible to feel with your finger. The crease isn’t gone just yet, but at this point it’s close enough that it’s difficult to imagine being bothered by it.
I guess it’s impossible to make it completely non existent but that’s getting to the point only seen shining light a certain angle?

I don’t have a problem with the crease as long as it’s durable and doesn’t crack easily. If it was an common problem I would expect to see those reports highlighted on here and other tech news websites.

Are these available in the US or is this just for taunting us?
Just like most global phones from overseas, you can buy it on the OnePlus website, or for Honor, Vivo, Xiaomi phones you can order them on websites like Wonda Mobile. That is where I bought my Honor Magic V3 Global.

I couldn't get the attached video to work for me.... How does this charge? if each side is 4mm then I have to imagine you can't fit a USB-c port?

Yes, it is impossible to make it nonexistent, right now anyway, since there is no hardware underneath the display down the center line, due to the hinge mechanism being there.

Im just not in love in the square formfactor these kinds of folding displays get
I am excited about a foldable, but tend to agree with this. A square display isn't really going to increase the amount of content that can be displayed in many circumstances. If you watch a movie, for example, there will be empty space on the screen.

Well as technology advances, you can have all those things in a smaller and thinner device. Imagine if people complained about TV's getting thinner and we were still stuck with huge CRT tv's lol.
But you don’t hold a tv in your hand or put it your pocket. I still believe a larger sensor for the camera would go a long way.
My point was, this seems like a very sudden obsession, not a progression. TVs gradually got thinner. iPad Pro suddenly shed weight, you know?

My use case will be to replace my iPad mini, which I use for reading.

Yeah, it’s depressing to see Apple becoming a ‘Services’ company with revenues driven by subscriptions.

Tim needs to ride off into the sunset. He’s been very accomplished in providing shareholders value. And yes, the markets love predictability and Apple’s annual revenues.

But I’m not sure Tim has the self-awareness that he’s not a product guy (*cough Titan/Vision Pro). So I expect Tim being ‘laser-focused’ on innovative projects in the pipeline for another 5-10 years.

Yeah, the ship has totally sailed unfortunately

He's going to have no choice at all but do "anything and everything" to keep juicing margins and to make # go up ... and their past success is actually going to serve as present and future punishment (getting judged against it)

There's just no way around further squeezing the lemon on all the customers.

I do give him credit for being so creative about it to this point, but one wonders how far this can extend into the future without something truly new and innovative, with mass market appeal.

It's hard to see VR headsets and desktop robots as fitting the bill -- but hey, I'm wrong all the time and certainly no product visionary, so I'll be interested to watch!

This I find just objectively depressing, ignoring all financial angles and company/product success or not

The incentives really get distorted when you're trying to get people hooked on recurring revenue streams. For a formerly product driven company, it's a hard pill to swallow and be happy about.

I'd feel similarly if they somehow, for some reason, went "all in on ADs" and our devices were all fully AD infested to keep the growth going

Exactly. A lot of wasted space.
