well, the article says that the manufacturer is "yet-unnamed". It could as well be Apple. The usb port looks like macbook pro, the glossy screen, the inbuilt camera, the keyboard (even the fact the letters glow in the dark), the flat key buttons, the single-button mouse pad, how the screen dips behind the base when open, the font of letters on the keyboard... so on.

I thought it was interesting that it:

The computer comes with a diary-like folder that attaches to the laptop via magnets.

The folder, available in different colors, also functions as a wireless charger for the device. One side features a screen made of material devised by E Ink, one of the recipients of investment by Intel Capital. It can display a picture, the calendar, or your schedule for the day.

This is way too close to apple design for anyone else to be making it, considering their recent close relationship. The camera looks idsentical to the one on apple computers, the flat keys, rounded edges, USB Port looks very similar and it does look very apple, as long as it doesnt come in that strange champagne color.

Why does it make me sad that this laptop could be running Windows? When I think of Windows, I get a dark, hollow feeling inside of me (even though my main computer right now runs Windows...it was for work). I guess the Windows guys need some style, too but if you really want a nice computer, you really need to get a Mac. It's almost like, "If it wasn't designed by Apple, it's ugly." We'll see who's logo ends up on this laptop and what OS it runs. Maybe it'll surprise everyone and come standard with Linux. :)

Ok please do not take this wrong, but I first though when i read this, ok MacBook Pro rip off, and then I looked at the pic with the straps and different colors and I'm sorry but I don't think many men would buy one of these lol. I'm not being descriminative but it's just like cars... in general how many straight guys own a Mazda Miada??? Really? Just my prediction... Time will tell!
Without the case it looks like the hottest notebook I've ever seen. Hands down dominates the MBP. And metal is pretty sexy. I think its the frame-less screen that does it for me. THAT IS NICE!

Just because an accessory makes it look feminine, doesn't mean the computer is.

Yeah, your R100's not bad at all...the major thing this has on it is that it isn't ugly. ;)

Oh yes- but just not that important in my books. An ugly R100 is for me better then a nice looking Macbook at double the weight.

The other issues with the R100 are pretty minor & would be fixed by anyone building a new one (faster CPU, more RAM, bluetooth, TVOut). I LOVE the SD card reader, which is not something Apple ever includes (card readers generally), which is a shame.

So here is a ultra-sleek notebook created with looks in mind and price was not a factor? Has Intel learned a bit from Apple or did Apple pick Intel because they saw where Intel was headed?

I'm hoping that "unknown" manufacturer is Apple. It could be possible. I know Apple likes to keep everything secret and stuff. But come on. All you need to do it make it a bit wider to fit a regular HD. Add a Magasafe. Put it in a plastic frame. And slap a real keyboard on it. And can you really nice MBP update? I can.

I'm a girl and I think those straps/colors are hideous. An aluminum version would be nice, though.

It's not all that much thinner than the MBP now, though.. unless in person .3 inches is more than it looks on paper. A TON lighter, though.

*shrug* I know I'm on the losing side, but although portability and battery life is important to me, I'm not really interested in giving up too much power in exchange.

30% is quite a lot. But still its really not that huge to the point that I would want to forgo a HD!

I could be mistaken, but after doing a little measuring in Photoshop of the side-view pic, I doubt they included a CD/DVD drive in there. I did a quick search on slot-load drive dimensions, and the thinnest was .5 inches. The bottom part of this prototype laptop measured to be about .38ish inches (I say "-ish" because of pixelation and not knowing the thickness of the walls).

Thin is in if you don't need some discs to spin.

Yeah they couldnt even fit a hard drive. So the base must be thinner than a 80GB iPod cause they couldnt even fit a 1.8" HD in there. iPod is .55" wide which means that I would say its atleast 2/3 of that since the HD isn't all the space in an iPod. I say .38ish is about right.

It's nice, but the design looks confused when compared to the current MacBook. Apple industrial designers produce better designs on the toilet every morning.

Too bad we haven't seen any of those nice toilet designs beyond the macbook! It seems recyling the iconic designs of yore is more popular. Maybe its constipation?

Pretty standard on ultra portables. I don't miss it- I have a USB one but I don't carry it & I've only ever wanted it once in a few years. In my experience, most people just don't use the optical drives on laptops all that much, especially not while away from the home or office.

What are hotcakes?

Wow. That is simply incredible. 14 hours of battery life?? Yes please!! Something like this although without the external screen or the handbag handles would be perfect if it came from Apple. It would sell like hotcakes. Incidentally, what exactly are 'hotcakes'??

Edit: Also, doesn't that webcam in there look awefully iSight like?

Pancakes:eek:

Hmmm. Nice handbag.

Funny how all these design studies on a PC platform rarely come from the PC maufacturers themselves but rather from Intel or Microsoft, no doubt trying to encourage Dell, Hewlett Packard and the rest to move from the dog ugly product they usually churn out.

Flash HDs are great for notebooks, especially when they're used as secondary machines. You can keep your music/video collection on your desktop, and have the advantages of flash on your laptop :)

An inch thick portable works fine for me. 0.3 of an inch hardly makes a difference to me. Invest the cost in offering better battery life or more features. I can handle laptops staying an inch thick if it benefits me in other ways.

It has amazing battery life, and some unique (albeit unwanted by some people) features :)

Good. I hope this comes out next year. I'm getting rid of my MBP. This week was the last straw. I've been in TX doing a training class all week long. The day I got here the sound on my MBP blew. Both internal and external. doesn't work in Windows under BC either. So I had to resort to using my work ThinkPad...the reliable laptop, for watching movies in the evening. I'm sick of this crap. Windows may be a PITA but at least its just software. I really hope Intel comes out with more designs as well.

Yes the WIRELESS CHARGER thing is way cool. I remember seeing an Apple patent about something like this. I don't know what that really means however and would want to see more info.

It's a good product, and has made an impact. I'm just weighing what other features are available in lieu of spending development money to match the dimensions. An inch thick laptop with better features works for me. How much are people really going to get out of a .3 inch improvement on laptop thickness vs. better features?

How good could the next MBP be, if it retained current dimensions while benefiting from having the development money invested in better capability. 20 hour battery life?

That Intel Linux based UMPC thing leads me to believe that this could have a similar OS...at least it would mean no Windows :)

Incredible.

In one stroke, this prototype is cooler than any laptop Apple has ever designed. Ives, pay attention: Portland's got your number.

I'm going to have to rethink another Mac purchase. This + Ubuntu = joy.

The Macbook Pro had a camera and microphone built-in, which was a really useful and great innovation at the time. The Macbook has the magnetic closing system, the Pro has an ambilight sensor for the keyboard, and both laptops have a Magsafe...Apple excel at the little things, and that makes their laptops cool...

on that wireless charger...

"The folio, which plugs into an electric outlet, can also double as a wireless charger for the laptop and other devices"

Huh?!?!?!? That could be coolest part yet depending how it works and for what devices. I wonder if I could cook my breakfast on that folio too. :p
