I don't think I've ever actually scratched a phone. My 8 Plus rolls commando 24/7/365 and still looks like it just came out of the box, two years later. Not one blemish.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm gloating, but goodness if people would just look after things then they wouldn't get damaged. It doesn't take much effort.

Pics?

That is why I ALWAYS use a glass screen protector! The glass screen protector can easily be replaced, the iPhone screen.... well it’s expensive if you don’t have apple care.

I keep my 11 Pro in the same pocket I keep my caltrops. Still no problems here.

I've carried all of my iPhones since 2008 with no case, screen protector, completely naked, in my pocket and never had an issue with scratching the screen.

My left front pocket has been dedicated to my phones for years. Absolutely nothing else goes in. Haven't had a screen protector in all those years, and never had a scratch.

You fell for the marketing. Until they use sapphire as a screen I will ALWAYS use a high quality glass screen protector and because of that my XS Max screen is flawless.

Smartphones 101

dont put a new iPhone in your pocket with lighters, keys, or other objects that are harder than the glass.

I scratched my new car, wait what?!!!!

Screw you ford, this new truck is garbage lol.

I’m not trying to sound like a smart ass, but I don’t understand why people don’t use screen protectors if scratches bother them so much. I am extremely anal (giggity) about my electronic devices, and I always keep a screen protector on the front and back and always in a case.

I get that some people don’t like the feel of screen protectors, I just think the trade-off is well worth it to avoid scratches on the actual screen. I’d rather get scratches on a $10 piece of replaceable material.
To OP - maybe Apple will be kind enough to switch it out for you?

Got the iPhone 11 Pro Max (i11PM) in yesterday. I had it in my pocket I guess when car keys and there are already noticeable scratches in the front glass. Some you can feel with your finger nail. Very disappointed at this point. Will post pictures when I get home.

Common sense not included with Apple purchase.

Why wouldn’t you use a glass screen protector? With the new ones on the market you can’t even tell you have a screen protector on.

After just over two weeks of normal use without a screen protector my screen was awful. Their advertising is misleading at best to where it makes people think they don’t need a screen protector!! After about an hour on the phone with Apple I was able to convince a senior advisor that it’s not normal to have so many DEEP scratches after just 2 weeks of normal, careful use. They agreed to send me a replacement free of charge along with a screen protector for the inconvenience. I’ve been an Apple customer since the 5s and never have I seen a screen scratch so easily. By the time started to notice it it was too late. I believe Apple will be more careful with their advertisements next time around, because I have a feeling I’m not the only one they will be replacing phones for. Oh...and the new phone got a screen protector the SECOND it came out of the box!! Lol

Keys and such will not actually scratch the glass. The glass (all tempered glass) is harder than the metal keys. What will scratch the glass are small particles of ”dust” that accumulates in the pockets. Silica (sand, dust, etc) IS harder than tempered glass. Silica is everywhere. Set the phone down and a table in a cafe and then slide it along the table when you pick it up and boom, could be scratched.
The tempered glass is not softer (easier to scratch) these days.
Every phone forum I’ve ever visited have had people complaining that the new xxxxx_blah phone screen scratches easier than the previous one. :p

But you have to admit their advertising and such could mislead so many people to think that it wouldn’t scratch right? I mean I’ve always had a screen protector on my phones right away for the most part, but I honestly thought this would be different this time around based on their advertising. I’m just glad the Apple rep agreed otherwise I’d be stuck with a crappy screen until I “accidentally” cracked it and had it covered under AppleCare!! 😉

Let’s all remember the oleophobic coating scratches MUCH easier than the glass.
Isn’t an oleophobic coating supposed to prevent fingerprints and smudges?? If so then the coating on mine was crap. Since day one I was wiping my screen clean a few times a day. I honestly think there’s a bad batch or two of screens that are getting damaged way easier than others, as well as screens that the coating didn’t take to maybe??

Makes you wonder what's more precious going in the other pockets, isolated from keys.

For me it's wallet right rear, phone (always alone) in left front, and keys and everything else jammed into right front.

Nothing else ever goes in the phone pocket, including receipts.
👆

My iPhone has gone in the same pocket, by itself, since the first one back in 2007. Right front. Nothing else in that pocket.

Incidentally, I've had my Pro Max for a few days. In my pocket, out of my pocket, etc and so forth, many times. So far, not one scratch. Not even a micro-scratch. I even checked in direct sunlight, which is what you have to do in order to see micro-scratches, so it's not even a frequent real world scenario. Though it's possible they will happen at some point in the life of the phone. My Xs Max had one, as did my 8 did, as did my 7, because I don't use a screen protector and also because...physics.

Bottom line is. You can have either scratch resistance or crack resistance. Apple chose crack resistance. Put on a good thin glass screen protector and your golden!

Or be an adult and accept that, if you don't use a screen protector, micro-scratches will probably happen.

At least that's what I do.
