Isn’t an oleophobic coating supposed to prevent fingerprints and smudges?? If so then the coating on mine was crap. Since day one I was wiping my screen clean a few times a day. I honestly think there’s a bad batch or two of screens that are getting damaged way easier than others, as well as screens that the coating didn’t take to maybe??

Yes, the Oleophobic coating is simply designed to prevent against smudges/fingerprints. But, that doesn’t mean it’s ‘fingerprint resistant’, it’s a naturally organic coating that is applied from the factory. But it probably depends from the oil composition from your fingers, (Being everybody’s fingers are different), from when you’re touching to the display. Not sure that you can exactly blame Apple here for the coating, being there are a lot of differentials that should be factored in.

This is raw physics how screen manufacturing works. You either make it hard for the screen to crack, or you make it hard for the screen to scratch. You don't get both. Either you make it stiff or soft. One of them is good for avoiding cracks, one is good to avoiding scratches.

QFT

Material science 101
The harder a material is, the more scratch resistant it is but lowers the flexibility and hence is more brittle, it will shatter easier
Introducing more flexibility for shatter resistance will lower the hardness and the scratch resistance
Apple has gone down the second route

I don’t like me iPhone sharing a pocket with a bit of dust let alone some keys!

I’m the same! I actually turn out my pocket regularly to get rid of any rogue particles that might harm my screen hehe

Its less so the screen - for me its more getting dust particles in between the phone and the edges of the case! lol

You can’t get both cakes. Apple was going for shatter resistance which meant a softer glass that’s more prone to scratches. A harder glass will prevent scratches more but the glass will be brittle and shatter more easily.

Lets also remember, a lot of people here Will class those little scratches that can only be seen under a light as a deep, life destroying scratch that shouldn’t happen under normal use. They are in the Apple store saying “Look, LOOK at it. That scratch is huge, exchange it” as the advisor says “I can’t see anything”.

I do put my phone in my pocket sometimes and there also things like keys in there. But I have it in a case and use a screen protector. I have the ultra-thin torras case so it offers good protection without it making the phone look bulky.

I mean I know my failings in life so I take steps to protect myself from myself.

Put a screen protector on recently. Would be from day one but I botched the application four times.

I hate applying screen protectors to stuff, so easy to either misalign or get dust under that you then have to look at practically for all your phone’s life afterwards. I’m looking at such a piece while writing this.. so annoying once noticed.

Anyway, had the phone since launch. before application I stared intensely below direct light and could not notice any imperfections. But I’ve been annoyingly super-careful. Glad that’s over!

Guys, I truly believe there is an issue with the screen with a few of the first 11 Pros out there, mine included. I’ve owned an iPhone since the original, day one, and upgraded every single year, and not one of those iPhones has scratched like this after less than one day. The scratches were deep and very noticeable under regular light. I put a privacy screen protector the day after it got it so it’s not bothering me but I keep thinking about it.
Theres also a huge thread on the apple forums on this.

From my personal experience, the scratches are more prominent for recent models. I started using iPhone 3GS and changed models about every two years and never used a screen protector (8 plus currently). There were minor scratches over time for the older models, and only appeared in bright sunlight. But for recent models the scratches are more easily seen, and more deep.

Got the iPhone 11 Pro Max (i11PM) in yesterday. I had it in my pocket I guess when car keys and there are already noticeable scratches in the front glass. Some you can feel with your finger nail. Very disappointed at this point. Will post pictures when I get home.

Wait! You put your phone in your pocket with your keys are are very disappointed the screen is scratched? Well, duh. Keys scratch glass. Good grief.

I wonder how many are actually confused on the display scratching versus the oleophobic coating. They’re really two different things that are _not_ mutually exclusive, some scratches dissipate over the time with usage of the phone, because the coating naturally wears off.

Here is my pro that I've had for a month. I have a pop socket to prop it up and never lay it flat on its face and yesterday I found this scratch that is down to the glass. I don't keep it in with keys or anything just in my back pocket at work. I have owned an iphone and have never had a scratch this bad on one of them. I usually don't use a case. A screen protector won't cover it either. I'm so disappointed in my new phone being messed up so soon. I may just sign up for applecare to replace the screen and then have to add a protector to it.

Keys do not scratch glass metal in keys is softer than glass. But things on the keys or in your pocket that the keys may move around such as sand and dirt can have objects in it harder than glass.

After refusing to use a screen protector for the past few years, I’m back to using one. I’ve cracked a few screens but that’s not my main problem, the scratches are always frustrating. I can feel the glass screen protector because it’s a bit thicker, but I prefer that over a scratched up screen.
I mentioned this in another thread, you can either pick shatter resistance or scratch resistance. Sapphire glass would prevent 99% of scratches but would probably shatter after 1 drop, gorilla glass is a compromise and won’t scratch from most normal objects but sand and other hard small particles will still scratch it.
Me too. I never used a glass screen protector until I dropped my xs max and a nick on it. lol too bad Had to learn the hard way.

Funny thing is my screen protector cracked yesterday, right at the corner which is unfortunate since that’s always the weak point. $17 for 2 new ones instead of $99 for a new screen.

Not a judgement in anyway but why do you put your phone in a pocket with so many other things?

I prefer to keep important things in my front pocket, less chance of anyone slipping their hand in when I am out and about vs the back pocket. I rarely wear a jacket or carry a bag.

Arent new screen for iPhone XS and 11 pros like over $349? Or do you have apple care?

Just wanted to share this story:

OK, so I’m getting out of my car to fill my GT up with fuel a few days back, I use Apple Pay at the pump for my phone, as I’m putting my phone back in my pocket, it inadvertently fell back out. [At the time, I was using a portfolio case, which flip opens], and it hits one corner on the pavement and lands facedown with the portfolio flap open. I used a cuss word out loud as a first response. 😁 I was thinking my screen would be shattered at minimum, nope, not even a single scratch on the display, [And yes I checked under various lighting]. I _never_ drop my phones, and for this to happen without any damage whatsoever, I was completely impressed/surprised. Is my situation indicative of others? Probably not, but I was fortunate the display had no issues cosmetically.

AppleCare, couldn’t imagine using one without a screen protector and without AppleCare. I’m not even that clumsy but it’s always that one time it drops that it seems to crack.
