In regards to Face ID and the phone being able to unlock without holding it in a specific direction and also knowing your attention status (whether you’re looking at the screen or not), I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that all this ARKit work is being released with iOS 11 as well. Probably a lot of that in use here along with all these new sensors.
Attention status? It can tell that?

I imagine advertisers would be interested in that.

I wouldn't like to have to take 100+ selfies a day to get into my phone and position my head to the right spot etc..
Resting my finger at the home button for less than a second was so much easier.

I will wait to see how it is implemented before any final decisions are made but I'm on the same page as you. Also, most of the day, I have my phone resting flat on my desk and I can unlock it, open apps, see texts, change music without having to pick it up to show it my pretty face ;) . It seems like a minor thing but since the leak, I've been thinking about *how* I interact with my phone. I faked having FaceID one day (meaning I picked up and looked at the screen anytime I wanted to unlock it) just to see and I found it annoying. But it might just be a matter of getting used to something new. I'm sure it'll have pass code unlock as well, but that's such a step backwards. We'll find out tomorrow how it all plays out!

EDIT: Post Keynote - I've decided to get the iPhone 8+. X looks very cool and I think it'll be a great phone but I'm going to wait another generation or two for a no button iPhone. I was never really bothered by it and going from a 7 to the 8+ is already a bump for me.
