For what it's worth, I miss Steve.
Not that I knew him personally :D
It's just that, keynotes will never be the same. Tim Cook is a nice guy, but the way Steve delivered a keynote... I don't know, there's no comparison...

As for 'Resolutionary' : it sounds pretty "Steve-ish" if you ask me (but my mothertongue is Dutch, so what do I know...)

Steve Jobs would never have let the new iPad out of the door. If Steve was still alive we would already be ordering the new iPad killer, iUnicorns that beam rainbows of happiness into our hearts. Also instead of the next iPhone we were going to get telepathy. Oh well.

and iPad wasn't a joke when that was announced. at least this is just advertisement.

agreed.

I never thought iPad sounded weird.

But at least Resolutionary has some truth to it. I mean, it's not revolutionary, but it is resolutionary I guess.

I don't think that term is bad. HOWEVER

I know what he would not have allowed is a thicker and heavier model than previous. I doubt Jobs would ever accept added weight and thickness for upgraded technology. He would make them go back and back again until they figured it out.

It really kind of pisses me off too. I use my iPad as a replacement for printed reference pictures while I'm painting. Getting closer to the weight of paper in my hand would be ideal.

Im sure the weight and size was decided upon well before he passed away they didn't just finalize the specs on this thing the day after he died. Im willing to bet they are working on specs for Ipad 4th Gen as we speak

I never thought it did either. I thought it was weird that people were thinking it would be called anything else BUT the iPad. iSlate? No way. iPhone, iPod, iPad. It was always going to be iPad. And yes, it was a big joke to some people--not so much of a joke now, is it?

I disagree. The world is moving to LTE. Tablets and phones need to be compatible, especially if they're running on Verizon's network who is REQUIRING LTE compatibility now. Apple is not going to sacrifice battery life, so this is a move they had to make to get the battery in there. The difference in design is barely noticeable. I doubt if you were holding an iPad 2 in one hand and an iPad 3 in the other hand that you would be able to tell the difference. Jobs would have approved it and probably DID approve it. They didn't design this thing a week ago--it's probably been in the works since the LTE chips became available.

I disagree with you. The new ipad could be lighter if Apple would manage to double the battery power without increasing the physical size. LTE is practical (although limited even within US) but power hungry retina display is not. Its make the texts and image crisp which you can perceive only when you zoom at a level where you never need to reach!!! ( unless you want to compare with non-retina display)

Steve wouldn't have approved of "thicker"?

I advise you to take a look at that:

http://ipod.about.com/od/decidingwhichipodtobuy/a/iphone_chart.htm

iPhone thickness 0.46 inches -> iPhone 3G (lo and behold) 0.48 inches!

In case of the new iPad we are talking about 0.03 inches (from 0.34 to 0.37), we are talking about roughly 600 µm here, a bit more than half a millimeter. That is a breadth of two hairs and in return we get Retina Display, LTE, faster chip and sustained 10-hour battery life - seriously, what is the problem?

In a thread a while ago, I was complaining about the very same issue, someone pointed me to the above fact about the iPhone and I started thinking.
I think Tim Cook knows, where he is headed and it seems a great direction.

It's nothing more than the typical hype that Apple surrounds most new products with upon launch.

There was nothing "Magical & Revolutionary" about the iPad 1, I know, I have one.

Nor is my iPad 2 Magical.

Although I'm waiting for my latest iPad to arrive, I can assure you no matter how wonderful the display is, will not be "Magical".... unless you an easily influenced three year old.

A good device? Yes. Magical or Resolutionary... No.

Why do you need 3 iPads though? XD

iPhone 3G was actually thicker than the original iPhone. The way they went around it is "it is actually thinner around the edges." Even he too will sacrifice function over form. But we are talking about half a millimeter thicker and one tenth of a pound heavier. Do you realize how little that is?

Lols at the idea SJ didn't have massive input into the design and minutia of this iPad. The most successful companies, of which Apple is objectively amongst, have at least a 5 year road map. Amazes me that "experts" and "analysts" get paid for copy that suggests otherwise, whilst someone completely removed from the industry like myself and no doubt many others on here have a greater grasp of reality.

In some respects I see the increased thickness and weight as an improvement in Apple's design philosophy - for too long the obsession with thinness has had a negative impact in some respects with unnecessary compromises being made. If there was a marginally thicker iPhone, shipping alongside the normal one, that had 25% better battery life I suspect the former would outsell the latter.

That said, one of the greatest strengths of Apple stuff is the old thing about minimalism and "leaving stuff out", and long may it continue.

"What'd you say?"

"I was just wondering if anyone thought he'd approve."

"It doesn't matter if he'd approve New Fish, he's dead!"

If you read the biography of Steve Jobs you know that marketing decisions were often very contentious and often changed at the last minute. So no, it's not necessarily the case that Jobs knew about and approved "Resolutionary." But it also doesn't really matter...Steve's gone now.

Here's why I don't particularly like "Resolutionary" and I think Steve Jobs may have agreed with me: it just doesn't mean anything to most people. The resolution of the display is the wrong thing to focus on because it doesn't sound all that exciting. Yes the display is great, but it would've been better to use a term that would resonate with non-techy people though. Everyone can understand "insanely great" and "magical" - but Resolutionary? Doesn't quite have the same ring.

Btw, anyone notice that iOS 5.1 accepts Resolutionary as a word and autocorrect capitalizes it? Hah. My guess is that we're going to see more "Resolutionary" products throughout 2012 (ie retina Macs) and it will be a big Apple buzzword for the foreseeable future.

I think that's one thing that I'll miss about Steve. He could market the **** out of something and get you excited about a small new feature. Remember the "amazing plastic back" of the iPhone 3G? :D

My iPhone didn't auto-correct it. And it underlines it in red to indicate misspelling.

Apple

I have a very strong feeling that Stevie J was involved in the next 5 years of Apple product releases. They may tweak what he did but make no mistake he had a say in everything. The company probably has enough respect for him not to change the products drastically.

New iPad? Opportunity for other Tablet Companies to make tablet personal assistant?

if siri functionality of the iPhone 4s was on the iPad i would be very happy. It would allow me to use the device as personal assistant. Something that i would value more than a upgrade in display resolution. By not releasing today Siri on iPad but only dictation it seems that the iPad fail the mark in progress if you compare it to the development of the iPhone4s.
In my opinion the iPad should have more functionality features than the iPhone, logically if the tablet market is taking over the pc market. For me as user i have to wait till Siri is fully adapted into iOS for iPad before i feel comfortable buying it. Just because the iPhone 4s offers more a better camera, also retina, complete Siri while the iPad have lesser camera quality and no siri.
Not knowing what Steve job will do but if apple is stretching their technology knowledge advancements which can be adopted into products on the shelf to generate more money by just releasing minor features. Something that would go against apple's philosophy in the time apple versus windows. Seem their is oppurtunnity in the tablet market for Siri like service, how longer apple is holding out on their iPad device with Siri other tablet makers could start releasing such innovation.
They can prove to court that iPhone works with sire but not iPad. Which mean apple could hold back this technology advancement. Holding back technology in devices is aloud but if another company produce a tablet with Siri like technology they could convince court that apple is holding back so that other companies can not compete wit their iPad product.......What will Steve Job think....?

Note someone told me that siri is not on the iPad because the iPad needs 24/7 data 4g connection like the iPhone 4s.

Did is what i found as reality of the iPad versus iPhone 4s using Siri or not.
How you have automatic switching for graphics on mbp. How hard is it to create such fuctionality for wifi and 4glte on iPad. When you start speaking with siri it switch from wifi to 4glte.
iPhone 4s data usage for use with Siri is not as much as people may think. Therefor 1-2gb bandwidth allowance should be sufficient enough in the most extreme way of usage.

it is a fiction excuse that full-time connectivity is needed to have Siri working. iPhone 4s is capable of switching between wifi and 4g also.

iPhone = Smart Phone = With you most of the time

iPad = Tablet = Not with you all the time

I think he would of approved it....

And if he didn't, it doesn't matter. He's gone, people need to stop saying 'would Steve jobs do this?'. Tim Cook is doing an amazing job and needs to make his mark on Apple.
