I can't see Apple doing that. There will be hardware upgrades and more tweaks to iOS6. Doesn't the iPad3 have LTE? No way would Apple just release and iP4s with a bigger screen and call it the new iPhone

But if it's only a larger screen. I'll probably give the SIII or Note a try just to try something new.

You answered your own question! Apple wouldn't do that. They won't make a new iPhone with only 1 new feature/change.

I think a better question is whether Apple will change the screen size at all. The SIII and Note are good phones. If you want a big screen you could go with them. I don't know how likely it is that Apple will increase the iPhone's screen size.

I still haven't fallen for this "big screen" thing yet. I don't buy the excuse "I won't be able to use the phone with one hand" excuse some people give as honestly I have pretty small hands for a 22 year old and I can use a 4.3 inch screen phone with one hand perfectly. So how small are y'alls hands cause honestly I do have pretty small hands.

Though after using some devices like that and holding many large screen phones I haven't seen an advantage yet. 3.5 still seems perfect for me. I can browse the web, write emails and even watch movies when I need to. The only time that I said I'd want a bigger screen was when I was using iMovie. Though stuff like that is really "designed" for the iPad. My iPhone does exactly what it is advertised to do and the screen size doesn't hinder it. I can get all that information from the internet just as good as any of those other phones can.

I think at this point contrary to what's being posted here Apple will increase screen size of the iPhone. Not as big as the Note

If the screen size doesn't increase iOS6 is going to have to have some major new functions for me to buy the new one. Otherwise I'll probably give the Note or SIII a try. My needs may not be the same as others but a larger screen for me would be useful for my job and personal use

I think we can all agree that LTE is a guarantee at this point, right?

I honestly don't care too much about the design itself, but I'm sure we will see some bumps to the processor and maybe RAM, etc. I think that a bigger screen is a real possibility this time around, but I am not going to leave based on the screen alone.

Sit tight guys, I'm sure this year will see a comparatively better iPhone bump than last year. It seems like the odd number generations are usually the more dramatic for spec bumps.

To be honest, at this point the iPhone is almost all I want/need spec wise, it's the OS I think could use some real changes.

Yeah, and it's reflecting upon the abysmal sales numbe...WAAAAIT A MINUTE
You say that like Apple is infallible. There was a lot of pent up demand leading up to the iPhone 4S launch. Lots of first time buyers - Verizon folks who skipped the 4 when it was launched in Jan '11, first time Sprint owners and then you have the iPhone 3G hold outs, people who passed on the 4 due to antenna gate. It was a perfect combination of events which guaranteed that the iPhone 4S would sell well no matter what.

But the smartphone market in the US is pretty saturated now. Phone users are much smarter and exposed to a variety of technology and know exactly what they want. Android is more polished than ever and ICS looks like a winner. People have the choice of hand sets and OS now that can stand up to the iPhone experience. Apple needs to continue to innovate to stay ahead of the curve. I don't think consumers will accept anothe 4S or 3GS type update. The HTC One X and the Galaxy S3 are formidable rivals who should not be ignored.

ETA: The next iPhone definitely needs a redesign. The current design with its glass front and back with the ugly black antenna connections on the outer band looks really dated compared to some of the sleek phones in the market now. Come to think of it, it definitely was not Apple's best design effort.

i agree up until the design of the 4 and 4s. I still think the phone is gorgeous and was the best designed iPhone ever. The 3g and 3gs looked like crap after seeing the 4 come out. I liked the first design i hope they return the aluminum back for the new one and make it look more like an iPad with curved design. After 2 years with the 4(was letdown with the 4s) i want a complete redesign and they need to do something pretty big with the next phone like you said. I also think the 4s sold well because it was on different carriers and the timing it came out with not many people having iPhones. They must do something special again to be back on top because right now they aren't on top which is a first for apple. This is make it or break it time.

People are already angry about the apparent minor update the 4S brought, so I don't think Apples PR image could take another knock about things like that twice in a row.

Sorry but those people are not in touch with reality. No way you can call the 4s a minor update. Only way you can call it minor is if you totally suspend the facts.

By your definition, the only people in touch with reality are geeks then. I am willing to bet that more than 95% of the people who own iPhones do not belong to the geek category and don't care about any of the improvements in the 4S, if they even know the technical differences between the 4 and the 4S to begin with. You think your average mom and girlfriend or high school kid (not nerdy) knows that the 4S has a dual core processor or is a completely differerent SoC compared to the 4? Or that it has a camera that takes pictures at 8 MP instead of 5?

So in terms of upgrade, the 4S was pretty underwhelming to most users especially when compared to the 4.

On paper it may appear minor, but IMHO, I think the iPhone 4S is a real step-up in spec. A5 processor, Siri, 8MP camera, improved lens, dual antenna. My wife didn't upgrade to the 4S so can compare the two phones side by side every day. More than happy with the spec and functionality of the 4S

That's total crap. So you are saying the only change that matters is the visible change. The change that shouts, look at me, I have the best, latest, newest. Well, I have news for you. If something works, and it works well, people stick with it. Not everyone is as superficial as you make them out to be

Confuzzled
Lol...your post screams: I am a 4S user! You sound like someone who is mad because they are stuck in the less optimal 3GS-4S-5S cycle. Your wide sounds smart. While she will enjoy the new iPhone 5 later this year, you will be stuck with your sorry little iPhone 4 with the 3.5" screen and the 'oh-so-improved internals' for another year.

i have siri on my 4 not a big deal. The new chip is the biggest upgrade camera isn't all that much better. Ive never had a problem with the antenna that was just people nitpicking over something that didn't matter... So where is the big upgrade then?

I knew that, just the hordes complaining don't. I was on here reminding people that aside from the RAM, the 4S is technically the biggest upgrade yet, with an extra 3MP on the camera and double the processing power. I'm sure if the 4S had come in a new case, with different looks those people would have loved it and gone on about how it was worlds ahead. People just that just need something different looking.

Apple could make the iPhone 5 be differentiated by a simple blue spot and a million people would buy it just so they could proudly show off their blue spot.

On that basis is why Apple limit and drip feed any new advances in their technology.

They were drip feeding new advances till now. They aren't the top anymore people caught up they need to do something bigger than everyone else to get back on top again. They didn't have any competition till this year.

The camera is not that much better? What planet are you on? Try taking a picture indoors after 6pm when the light is not ideal. Compare the 4 and the 4S and then tell me there's little difference. The 4S has replaced c90% of my point and shoot camera use.

With the release of several high-end devices on rival hardware, I'm sure Apple will step up their game and put themselves back on top with the iPhone5/6.

They've improved the back camera every year i don't find it that big of a jump. The 4's camera is plenty for a phone.
