So far I've purchased every iPad, and this one will be no exception. However this one will be purchased as a gift only. 9.7" display is optimal for me.

At the size and price of an iPad mini, I'm more interested in the Kindle Fire with Amazon Prime.

I have the Fire. The size is right for reading on a plane or on the couch/bed. But the OS is too quirky. I'll definitely wait for the mini. Everything else I have is Apple so it will certainly fit my system.

another word - profit. it's all about the profit margin. if apple throws in a retina screen, they will just increase the price to maintain the profit margin. apple has shown that price is not a driving factor with their products - people will still buy.

if apple was only making ~30% profit margin like the rest of the industry, they wouldn't have nearly the cash and the resulting stock price growth. the fact that they made historically 68% on their iPhones and now 70% on their iPhone 5 means they have reduced manufacturing costs yet passed none of that onto the consumer. they are focused on ever-increasing ways to boost profit margin in an industry with a historically decreasing margin over the last decade

I agree with you on the price not being a driving factor for most Apple products, but i paid 499€ for my iPhone 3G, then 659€ for my 4S and today I would pay 729€ for the 5 (Italian prices). If this is the trend, in 2-3 years we're going to pass 1000€. Considering the steady profit margin I'd say that the consumer is the first (and only one) who pays.

Some people are really confused about why Apple is bringing our the iPad mini.

It's NOT about giving the already devoted Apple user a smaller, more portable version of a powerful, technologically advanced (read: retina display) tablet product (read: iPad).

It's ALL about making a cheaper iPad for the masses. And that doesn't require a retina display.

That's it folks, you can dream about something else, but this is what's going down.

Yep. I'm expecting that Apple users with high expectations will be severely disappointed by this new device. From reading other posts on this thread some are ready for simply another iOS device with the mid size form factor while others want another another game changer with this one. Apple could split the market with a low end non-retina non-LTE mini and high end retina display with LTE, but I'm guessing they go the bare bones route to suck first timers into the ecosystem.

What do you guys think of this?

"Now, because the iPad mini will squeeze the iPad 2′s 1024-by-768 9.7-inch display onto an area that’s at least 40 percent smaller, the individual pixels will be closer together so pixelation will be less visible, conventional wisdom has it.

Who knows, Apple engineers could even hit the magic 320 pixels-per-inch density required to justify the Retina moniker, even if it means slightly increasing the resolution beyond 1024-by-768."

I admit to have fairly high expectations (actually if it has retina, that's it, I'm on board), but looking at the past, the boldest move Apple did towards selling cheap devices was diminishing the price of a model once the new came out.
If I remember correctly, the primary target of a new device was never being cheap and for the masses.
Of course, lowering the price of a device opened a new market share of the people who couldn't previously afford that device, but starting with that as a primary goal is a rather non-Apple move. That's a big compromise that only who needs to chase has to do. On the tablet market, Apple obviously is not in that position.
My guess is that Apple will enter and dominate the new market of 7inch tablets (for which there is indeed a big demand) just by making one, even if it won't cost less than 350$.

A 7 inch display with 1024x768 would have 163 ppi. Very, VERY far from 320 and still very far from the 264 of the retina iPad.

I would buy it without a retina display... I still have my iPad 2... I don't notice that it isn't retina. I am sure if I picked up and used a Retina iPad for a while, I would start to have issues with mine. but at the moment. I am content.

If it is 1024x768 on a 7.85" screen, that would be significantly higher than any non-retina display - except the older phones, whaich are held much closer.

Actually it would be lower than it's main competition, The Google Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD, both of which have a 1280X800 resolution and cost $200.

That's less than a 10% difference. You would have a hard time telling the difference. I think Apple will bring on an incell or IGZO display which will be considered better.

Maybe, maybe not. But it does look considerably different to the general public. I can't see Apple putting out a product with a main spec like resolution being worse than their direct competition, it's just not the way that they do it.

I agree! I have an iPad 1 & 2 and am looking to replace the 1. I passed on the "new" iPad, even though the screen was a huge improvement, as it was thicker, heavier, ran hotter and takes longer to charge.....every critical factor seemed to be moving in the wrong direction.

So, I purchased the Kindle Fire HD and spent the last 2 weeks testing it. I just returned it. I agree....the OS is quirky. The screen is beautiful though. It really makes it hard to look at the iPad 1 or 2 screen after using the Kindle Fire HD.

If the iPad Mini has Retina display, I'm in! Or, if the October 17th show is to announce an improved iPad "3" dealing with the short comings of the iPad 3.... Plus adding the new dock connector (ie iPad New "S").....Count me in!

Else, I'll likely either keep chugging along with the iPad 1, or pick up a Kindle 7 or 8.9 inch HD version and use it until Apple pulls it all together with the iPad.

If the iPad mini has the same display as the iPad 2... No way!

If it has retina, I'll buy it if it's around $300 or less. If it doesn't have retina, I don't think I'd buy it even at $200. The competition has higher resolution screens for cheap and a 7-8inch iPad is more of an ebook reader replacement for me so high res is a must. Sadly most of the rumors and speculation say no retina..

Imagine if the iPad mini doesn't have a retina screen & apple prices the mini $350 for the base model

Do they have the balls to do that

Since the iPad mini will be aimed for the lower priced market, I'm guessing it won't have retina. It's important to note that it is Apple and it won't be priced the same as Nexus 7.

It will not have Retina this year but it will in the iPad mini 2.

Why does it have to be aimed only at the lower priced markets? Why not 2 versions? One with all the good stuff and another plain version. This will be an interesting issue. What if it did come out with retina, A6, etc at a high price and sold out right away?

Idk. Because it's supposed to be competing with Kindle and Nexus.

If is going to have the black slate color , same as iPhone 5
It would be weird if it doesn't come with retina also
