No, because if it did come without one, the one coming out the following year will definitely get one, and I'd end up selling and upgrading anyhow, so I would wait.

----------

I was referring to price for what you buy. I won't buy a $300 or 300euro ipad mini with 3mp camera single core A4 and 1024x768 just because older apps will work.

I want a quality product from apple which is expected.

oh and retina is full HD+. so HD displays aren't considered crappy.

Well not really the iphone 5 display and touches don't even reach 720p so they are not HD

A 7.85" iPad with 1024x768, at 163 ppi, would have been fine a few years ago but it's very, very hard to go back once you've experienced better. I was very happy with my iPad 2...until I got an iPad 3 at launch. Video viewing aside, 90% of what I do on my iPad is reading of some description which benefits more from higher ppi than any other activity, games included. So, the prospect of going from 286ppi (or whatever the new iPad is) to 163ppi is one I wouldn't even consider personally.

Anyway, it's nailed on and will be classic Apple to sell several million iPad mini 1's and then release a far better specced mini 2 with a superior screen. Sadly.

one word --> NO

and i don't think Apple will release an iPad Mini without a retina screen. Apple has never released a "budget" redesign of their premium product after the original premium product was released. correct me if i'm wrong though...

Apple must know they have made retina the new standard for their company, and i am confident without a doubt that Apple will put retina in the new iPad Mini (presuming one will actually be released). something will have to be sacrificed, and where i think Apple will do this will be in price. the iPad Mini will NOT be $299 as we all wish it would, it will be $349 and higher maybe even $399 depending on what Apple throws in there. the profit margin of the iPad 3 must be maintained...they already took a hit in profit margin going from the iPad 2 to the iPad 3. in exchange for Apple charging a premium you will get a thinner/lighter design that's more portable, much longer battery life than the iPad 3/new-iPad and any other tablet in the same class, lightning port commonality with the iPhone 5, iSight camera, and yes...retina.

if Apple does not include a retina screen, as many here suggest, that means the Kindle Fire HD will have a higher resolution screen. that's not something Apple should be proud of, especially in a new product release

There has been hundreds of uses of the term "Retina" in this thread.
But has anyone tried to define it for a 7" tablet. i.e. Can't see the pixels at a "normal" reading distance.

If it is 1024x768 on a 7.85" screen, that would be significantly higher than any non-retina display - except the older phones, whaich are held much closer.

But it would be a little lower that the 15" MacBook Retina.
I'm tempted to suggest Apple use the "Near-Retina" designation for the iPad Mini 1.

My guess, a iPad2 resolution and approximate spec, at $299 or $349 price point for 16Gb.

The iPad 2 looks like standard definition compared to the iPad 3 's 1080p look

Just a comparison

iPad Mini?

One word "cost"

another word - profit. it's all about the profit margin. if apple throws in a retina screen, they will just increase the price to maintain the profit margin. apple has shown that price is not a driving factor with their products - people will still buy.

if apple was only making ~30% profit margin like the rest of the industry, they wouldn't have nearly the cash and the resulting stock price growth. the fact that they made historically 68% on their iPhones and now 70% on their iPhone 5 means they have reduced manufacturing costs yet passed none of that onto the consumer. they are focused on ever-increasing ways to boost profit margin in an industry with a historically decreasing margin over the last decade

I'm an oddball. Read my posts and you'll see that. Since forever, I've been a contrarian when it comes to resolution. I have expertise in human factors, retention and memory, so I'm the kid that claimed that 640X480 was all that I needed in 1990 when widescreens were rolling out.
Resolution matters UP TO A POINT. After that, everything else matters more.

If the iPad Mini doesn't fit into my outer wear pockets, then it will not matter if it has or doesn't have a retina display.

Guys are you sure for the ipad mini?.... what about if Apple introduces a silence update (rev. b) of the new iPad

If all of Apples products are retina display, why would they go back? it would be stupid. Plus going from iPad 2 to iPad 3 its not the like the price went up, it was the same, with the retina display. I think they would for sure use the retina display, not that much more expensive.

95% certain that mini will NOT have retina.

reasons :-

requires a larger battery
would further fragment the eco-system (it will have original ipad/ipad 2 resolution).
would not have a pricing fit into the apple range (ipad mini without retina could be sold at only a modest premium to new ipod touch)
unnecessary on a 7" device.

maybe in 2013 or 2014 though....

I could see it though, with a retina display just to compete with Amazon Kindle HD with a priceta of $199 so with a pricetag of $199-299 they can/should do it otherwise they have competition if they would go back to the old resolution.. game changer

Sure I would. Some people are making way too big a deal of the resolution. It's not the specs it's the experience! The size is smaller so the DPI will be greater for the same resolution as the iPads 1&2 and it will look better for reading. Also I am expecting the screen to be the new "in cell" type for greater thinness, That will be very impressive. To go to a retina iPad3 display they would have to use a more powerful and expensive processor and the resolution would be insane for that size since the iPad3 uses a classic doubling of the pixels in two directions (4X) You would never see all those pixels. 2048×1536 pixels.
so to recap
incell standard resolution 1024x768
A5 low power Gen2 like in the iPad2
insight camera 5 MB
Black casing that looks to be plastic or a type of Carbon Fiber the black one we have seen has inserts for screws to fit in and a cutout for the 3G. I've heard that carbon fiber does not pass HF RF well so that is why a cut out is still needed
A 3G model with GPS sounds likely too
So Heck yes I would buy that!

I had planned to buy an iPad mini. but as soon as the rumor leaked that it would not have retina, I bought the NEW iPad.

I wouldn't buy either until it was officially announced. Seems silly to discuss it now as it just raises expectations for those that take this forums posts for gospel
