I would get the ipad mini for reading so retina is not crucial.

Only worry is if it is tiring on the eyes. Doesn't seem to be a consensus on this.

if you're going to get it for reading then you'd want a higher resolution. Text is more readable and less tiring on the eyes with retina and you can fit more on the page....

I will wait for the 2013 or 2014 model with the 'new retina display' to come out.

But at these rumored $250 price points I can see lots of us picking them up just for fun.

acceptable?....why is that? Please elaborate...

Lol! the ignorance...no offense but that is a load of crap. I am 1 member of that audience and a spot on screen IS A MUST for long hours of reading content. Plain and simple.

I dont care about usability, the OS, the brand if my eyes will be tearing from squinting and pixelated documents.

Wow...
Before the Retina Display introduction everyone was happy with high-res displays.
Now, not even a basic display but an HD display is considered crappy and pixelated.
Chill a little bit with the pixels, people. I know the retina display is awesome and you can't even see the pixels blahblahblah, but that doesn't make the rest of them crap. They're still easily usable and an HD (even 720p) display for 7" or 10" is pretty damn good!

I was referring to price for what you buy. I won't buy a $300 or 300euro ipad mini with 3mp camera single core A4 and 1024x768 just because older apps will work.

I want a quality product from apple which is expected.

oh and retina is full HD+. so HD displays aren't considered crappy.

I don't understand this. I've been reading off of computer non-retina screens for >22 years. Never had a problem reading off of them before.

I have a Kindle Fire that is very easy to read without retina display. Do you think a non-retina display mini iPad will be harder on the eyes than a Fire?

BTW I'm looking forward to getting the mini iPad to replace the Fire. The mini will have the correct form factor with iOS functionality. And, will be just as easy to read on.

Not only would I buy one for $300, I would pay more. In my work and on my own I'm on a screen a lot. A reading device of the correct, for me, form factor is what I need. Price? Not a problem for the correct device.

I already have a thread started talking about the mini ipad NOT being cheap. As I would pay more too as long as it is Worth it!

I can easily see apple releasing a less than todays spec ipad mini with next year going retina or something stupid. I want it now instead and i'm willing to pay for it.

I know a non-retina is adequate but come on....we have moved on and into higher than HD res. not lower res, not 768 isn't full HD....it is not much asking from todays technology.
That is my answer.

What ignorance ?

I think you need to accept that you are not the center of the universe, and quite possibly, not the average consumer / user that Apple is aiming for.

Why not plan for the future if you know what I mean, but i have to agree with you that it will most likely be 1024x768 :(

Oh, I see you have already come around and accepted the inevitable.

Maybe in the iPad mini 2 or 3 we'll see a true retina display. But for now, it would add cost w/o much benefit.

160dpi is not bad at all to start with.

The ignorance that have thinking they want a tablet cheap as possible, not 1 single product is cheap as possible with apple. It is all carrying about the same amount of percentage profit. Hence, the most profitable companies of all companies. Wouldn't you agree?

I know the ipad mini 2 or 3 will have retina, and that is a tactic to maximize profits and only profits. Its not like it cannot be done or it is too small to read or some other and any other reason being spouted here. When the ipad mini 2/3 does have retina, no one will say it looks ugly or is too small to read but the contrary! it will be 'wow it is perfect to read, i can't go back to 768px again'

160 is not bad true, it actually looks pretty good, but that can be applied for all products, why retina MBP? i mean it looked pretty good before. Why the retina iphone? If you know what I mean.....

Sounds like we have different uses for a mini. Mine is reading so don't need higher resolution. If I need more I use my MBP. The mini and MBP will be a great pair to have.

please elaborate, tell me how it sounds that I have different uses for a mini?

Dude, chill out! Why so aggressive?

My needs are reading. Yours involve higher resolutions, HD, whatever.

Now, please go try to pick an argument with someone else.

A mini with a retina display will just up the cost also, im sure if these new ipad is true is to kick other tablets in the market even more; in the second revision im sure it will have retina display.

aggresive? you dude are being all defensive lol. I said please :D

HD is good for reading....try it.

Not for me, iPad mini (translates to Budget iPad).

I have a Retina iPad, I wouldn't buy this for the same reason I wouldn't buy an underpowered MacBook when I already have the Retina Macbook.

This is aimed at the masses who cannot afford the normal iPad, other than that it has no reason for being.

I've never understood the big iPad. It's completely redundant to a MBP or MBA.

I have the Kindle Fire which is the correct form factor for me. This isn't about money. I make a good salary and can have anything I want many times over. What I want is the iPad functionality in the correct form factor. iPad mini will give me that. Whatever screen it has will be good. When there's an upgrade to a better screen I'll try to be the first to have it.

What's amazing to me is all the pretentious folks that just can't grasp the obvious reality.

Are the screens in the iphone 3g/3gs & ipad 2 the same ?

I read they might use the same iphone 3gs screen for the mini

I just got my iPad 3 last night and did a side-by-side text comparison with my work issued iPad 2. I hadn't put much stock in retina displays until now--seeing them side-by-side. I had a similar experience when I bought my first HD TV. It never really sank in until I saw the old SD tubes next to an HD panel in a store. Once I saw the two next to each other (like the iPad 2 and 3) it clicked for me.

I have an iPhone, iPad, 13" MB Air, and 17" MB Pro, so I'm probably not going to be in the market for the mini; however, I hope Apple continues to be the market maker and implements retina as the new baseline. I don't think it'll matter much one way or the other though. A $200 price point is probably more important for the target market.

PS I'm eyeballing my 17" MB Pro now and wishing it had a retina display. First world problem--I know.

I'm 100 % sure now the iPad mini will have retina
I just don't see apple releasing a new product without retina
They are trying to get as many things as they can to retina , from macs to monitors & laptops

I'd be surprised if there weren't raging debates about this within Apple. But, I'm inclined to think that they will release at least one version of the Mini this year with retina. Either they do non-retina to try and compete on the uber-low end or they do retina and release a Mini that's at least $299 and maybe more. My bet is on the latter.

Agreed! Now all iOS devices are retina, I can't see Apple releasing anything but retina on a new device! Why would they take a step backwards by using a non retina display. Dont know why people think it's going to be the cheap device many think it will be.

There has been hundreds of uses of the term "Retina" in this thread.
But has anyone tried to define it for a 7" tablet. i.e. Can't see the pixels at a "normal" reading distance.

If it is 1024x768 on a 7.85" screen, that would be significantly higher than any non-retina display - except the older phones, whaich are held much closer.

But it would be a little lower that the 15" MacBook Retina.
I'm tempted to suggest Apple use the "Near-Retina" designation for the iPad Mini 1.

My guess, a iPad2 resolution and approximate spec, at $299 or $349 price point for 16Gb.
