Nah, I'm waiting for the 2019 model.

My boss asked me if I wanted a loaded 2018 15' a couple of weeks ago because I'm doing some compute-intensive work now. I told him I can wait until June when the new models come out.

So, yea, I don't want to buy a 2018 right now even I don't have to pay.

Since the question is about buying a 2018 today, no not today.

Given all the issues Apple has had with the current design, I figure it's only a matter of time before they make changes to the areas that are causing issues. Likely the 2019 models have big improvements. I'm not the type of person that waits to see what the next year tech is before buying, generally. But in this situation, I would wait to see the 2019.

Absolutely. From all real use case scenarios, these are awesome computers. I'm not in the market right now. My Air is ageing, but still meets my needs and I just got a brand new Max Mini. But if I were in the market, I would scoop one with no hesitation.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on much changing design wise. They certainly aren’t going to go thicker. There’s a chance too that they switch to their own chips and then you’re in for a whole new slew of issues. At least the ‘18 design has been around a few years.

I have zero issues with my 2018 MBP and I use the hell out of it every day...

But this is the missing piece for most people... Many people complain about the T2 chip which is a custom Apple chip used in newer models and Apple is expanding the use of custom chips with every major revision. There is room that you'll see a KB fix, but a T3 (or whatever new chip they add around FaceId or something) adding separate issues.

Either way, jumping first on a major revision like is rumored for this year has more risk then buying a late model of a refined revision.

That being said, we're very close to the new models so I would wait if I were buying today to see what was coming and possibly score a discount on the 2018 as stock is cleared out.

I understand what you mean. But do you remember him telling us we were holding our iPhone 4's wrong during AntennaGate? And then when the outcry finally got loud enough, placating people by giving a away free bumpers that probably costs Apple a few cents, rather than replacing the phone with a permanent fix of a redesigned antenna system.

That one was so funny. Such a crisis on the forums, but in real life it was a giant nothing burger. Never had a single problem with that phone. One of the best Apple put out. Ever. I still have one today. Never dropped a call. No real life person I've ever met had a problem with the phone. But people screamed on the forums like it was the end of the world. Never buy products based on forums like this. People love to complain, but real life is massively different.

At this point, no, but mainly only because it's been 8 months since its release and so we're bound for a new update sometime within the next 6 months I would think. If I wasn't a college student and I had a lot of expendable income and the new generation was released, I'd be happy to buy one.

However, I chose a Dell XPS 15 over a MacBook Pro 2 years ago due to the value it provided (literally $1000 less for the comparable specs), and I'd probably still make the same choice since I'm still in college, and therefore in a similar financial position, like I was when I made that decision.

In my ideal world, the next generation of MBPs would be 16" screens and have the touchbar optional, and I'd wait until they were in Apple's refurbished store to get them for a couple hundred dollars off. However, I probably won't be buying a new laptop for at least another 3 years. My Dell XPS is still running as good as it was on day one and it's 2 years old.

I say yes, but that's sort of a personal choice. I feel like the MBP design took a big hit in 2016. Very much a step down from the 2015 model. However I've used several Windows laptops over the past several years, and the experience is always inferior (IMO). Part of it is my preference for MacOS over Win, but part of it is just basic function. My work laptop is a Lenovo X1 Carbon. Great laptop - the keyboard is heaven compared to Apple's butterfly keyboard. However the trackpad is so bad that I've started using the little eraser stick pointing device out of sheer frustration. Plus I hate 16:9 aspect ratio screens - 16:10 is so much better. (3:2 would be even better!). So while the current design has its flaws, the total package is still superior in my view. So if I was in the market for a new MBP, I would bite the bullet and purchase a 2018 model.

Also - there's a lot of optimism in this thread that there will be a re-designed MBP in 2019. I just don't see it. There hasn't been very many rumors about it, and the current model is up to date with its specs, so I would think Apple will rest on its current design until at least 2020.

I love my MBP. Of course it is not for everyone and I understand the criticism. People though are generally negative when change occurs. Apple changed many things with the MBP and that caused dissatisfaction. The keyboard is one of the biggest issues that people are having. I guess you love it or hate it. Personally I love it and I just hope that the horror stories regarding its reliability are not widely spread.

I have a 2017 model that was issued by my employer. I would not spend my own money on it and don’t think the 2018 is much different as far as experience.

When it works, it’s fine, but I’ve had issues with the keyboard. Enough to put me off from getting one for my own use.

On top of the fact that I’m not a big fan of the 15” size. I’d consider the rumored 16.5” one depending on the price, keyboard, etc, but I’ll pass on the current model.

Of course I would, its an excellent computer. My only issue with it is the price, which is a bit on the high side.

Nope. Not at this ultra premium price tag. For the first time in years I have money in hand and I find myself holding back. What I’ve read about recent Macs make them seem like a risk beyond my current tolerance.

The MBP price is a significant issue, I must admit. When I compare to a 17" Lenovo laptop (with a great selection of ports) for around $1400...

...it definitely gives me pause. But having choices is good.

Had a brand new ThinkPad. Hated the trackpad and Windows of course. Just got a new 18' MBP today. So far, so good. Things are excellent.

I think Apple lost a lot of customer confidence lately especially mine, i would rather take my chances with a used macbook from 2017 instead of a new macbook pro or air 2018 because of the the hd drive swap and keyboard.

I am on #5 and have had a few issues with this one as well. Non-responsive "e" key, BridgeOS / random shut downs. If Apple offered me my purchase price back in terms of cash or store credit, I would at the very least wait for the 2019 models and hope for some design changes.

5 units with a bad “E” key?! You need to buy a lottery ticket.

I don’t anticipate things changing either. I usually get a new MBP in under a year anyway.

Oh! Well in that case, you could very well end up fine..

I'm not sure why you "anticipate" things will be fine.
Just a gut feel?

I think everyone that bought a MacBook but had problems probably went into it "anticipating" no issues.
They just sort of "happen" - thus is the nature of poor design (of the keyswitch in this case)

I guess I’ll report back with monthly updates about my keyboard until I’m ready to buy a new machine.
