3.5 inch screen was amazing for 2007, it's time to move on.

Not at all. 3.5 inch screen works great for many users, and I for one don't want it to be bigger. I like my phone the size it is, which allows it to fit nicely in my pocket. I don't want to have to wear cargo pants to be able to keep it in a pocket.

Some people out there (maybe you) truly want a bigger screen/device to make it more usable for certain tasks. But I would bet that the majority of people crying for a 4 inch screen are doing so because they worship tech specs and want to brag that their phone is better than their friend's phone. For those people, they just need to go get an iPad. Most of us want to keep the 3.5 inch screen.

I mess around with a friends EVO. Way to big for me. That isn't to say it's not good, just too big for my tastes. The size of the iPhone 4 is perfect. Good screen, great resolution, and it's easy to carry/hold.

If I want something bigger, I'll get an iPad, or similar.

Time to move on? Man, do you want a phone the size of a laptop screen? Phones are meant to be helpful, fast, handy and good to look at, and one of the factors I believe attracts most people is a phone's design. People IMO prefer a more thin, slick and small phone than a big, large one.

Nope, not going to. I'll save the dough for next year. I'll just get the back glass replaced by apple so it'll feel like I'm getting a brand new phone. ;)

My phone spends 90% of the time in a pocket. I am quite happy with the 3.5" screen. More than that and it would stop being pocket friendly.

Have any of you put a 4 inch phone in your pocket?

Not much of a difference. Your pockets must be tiny or people wear those thin jeans that wrap around your leg.

A 3.5 inch and 4 inch screen fit perfectly in pockets of jeans, shorts, and suit pants.

If the iPhone 4S or 5 is a 4 inch screen, everyone on this forum would buy one. Plus 4 inch screen with Retina Display would dominate.

3.5" screen is good for a watch, not a smartphone to surf the web and read PDF files and e-mail clients, etc...

Sure my EVO 4G with the 4.3" might be a tad too large, but I have played with other Android phones with the 4" screen, and that is the prefect sweet spot, not too large like 4.3", nor too small like 3.5". Apple can easily make the iPhone5 with a 4" screen, and not have to make the device any larger, the HUGE and ugly bezel on the iPhone at top could easily be taken up with screen, and stretch the screen further to the sides.

That is why I like HTC phones, the screen takes up most of the device, and has a tiny thin frame around it, the iPhone5 could do the same, and still be a similar form factor the i4 currently has.

Nope!

If its a CPU spec bump and a higher MP camera I will be passing. I want a bigger screen and I don't mean some .2 size increase.

Come on :apple: do something amazing with this next phone and surprise us all!

No one said that. The poster just stated that 3.5" is so 2007, and that's not the case. I do think the EVO is too big though, as my post suggested. Same for some of the DROID brands. Big, flat brick. I don't want/need that. It's a phone...not a laptop.

Wow...extremism...a watch. Right...

An oar is a nice toothpick, but I need a Sailboat Mast for real stuff....

Sad thing this is another "spec whore" thing. I've seen some of the awesome "4" Screens"...they're not so great. Bland, washed out colors. Granted some of that's the OS, but the screen has some of that. Same with responsiveness. Kind of like the laptop argument. Wow...I can get a 15.6" screen laptop for $399. Then realize the resolution is 1280x800...pixels anyone?

I was just talking about the size, not the type of screen. For sure the brand new Samsung Galaxy S2 screens are the top quality with their Super AMOLED + technology, it is what Steve Jobs wanted in the iPhone, but Samsung only has enough for their own phones, next year they will market to other manufacturers.

But imagine a 4" screen with "Retina" display, would be pretty cool.

Sorry....was teasing. I agree...if they have a Retina, 4", it would be nice. Won't disagree. We'll see...

Yes I will upgrade but only because I can get for the contract price every year.

Pretty sure the iPhone6 is supposed to have the next gen Samsung screens, what would be on their Galaxy S3 phones due in Spring/Summer 2012. Will be better than "Retina", plus have the amazing colors of Super AMOLED +, with the dark dark blacks, and blues and yellow that look so vivid and deep.

You say that the bigger screen wouldn't make much of a difference, but this is your justification because your priority is a larger screen. My priority is to keep the same size enclosure, or smaller, so almost any increase in screen size is a problem. For my needs, the phone needs to stay the same basic size. I might be able to deal with an increase of 1mm in each direction, but I doubt this would allow Apple to slap a 4 inch screen inside.

As I said, if you want a bigger screen, then get an iPad. Or, if you need your phone to be this size, then go get an Android. I think Apple realizes a phone should be small, and will not sacrifice their slim form factor, to give a slightly bigger screen that most users of the iPhone don't want in the first place.

I'd have to see the other screen. I've seen AMOLED+, but not for an extended period. I just don't want the iPhone getting ridiculously bigger...like a jump from 3.5" - 4.3". That would be crazy...

If it's just a spec bump, I'd be more interested in the SG2 than to upgrade. Although it'd be hard to leave the iPhone4. With jailbreaking, I've got it customized pretty much the way I want.

The upgrade was similar in evolution as 3G to 3GS?

http://www.redmondpie.com/apples-ne...tt-mobile-support-a5-similar-external-design/

If rumours are true, I will be disappointed to say the least. Screen size desperately needs attention. Apple will really be playing catch up if they maintain the same design for another year.
Why would you expect it to NOT follow this "tradition"? I fully expect the 2011 edition of the iPhone will be nearly identical to the iPhone 4 but with a spec bump and the separation of camera and flash. We'll get a major physical revision in 2012.

Apple invests a LOT of time and money in its designs and they have to last longer than one year for them to pay off. Frankly, I'm surprised they even change them every two years, but they have to due to the ridiculously, childishly fickle cellphone market.

As for the screen size, I am not excited to see Apple jump into that stupid fray. A small phone is a GOOD phone. 3.5" is just fine. Slightly larger is fine. I don't want to see it get huge like some of these Android phones are. Pockets are only so big. These things are uncomfortable to have in a pocket as it is.

Because if it does follow the tradition as you say, I think Apple will be in a bad position. Another year of a 3.5" display?! I agree that the 4.3" androids are excessive but a 3.7 or 4" on the next iPhone is a must.

Yes I would still buy it. I would be particularly interested in buying it if it was a 3GS type upgrade.

The iPhone 3G is painfully slow - a point that would be even more obvious if it could run all current software features. The 3GS sufficiently resolves this complaint.

IMO the biggest upgrade they could make for the next iPhone is to utilize the dual core processor in the iPad 2. Any other updates are unnecessary (although nice). A bigger screen would be a usability improvement along the lines of the retina resolution - it would be very nice but wouldn't transform the device or provide the longevity provided by a processor upgrade.

I think you are going to be very disappointed. Apple is very happy with the iPhone size, and I don't see them changing this anytime soon (excpet to make it thinner). Apple doesn't make changes like this to compete with other phones on the market (android or otherwise). Apple re-wrote the book on how to deliver a successful phone, and other companies are making choices to try to reverse the trend. But they are not doing very well. Sure if you compare all Android handsets to the iPhone then they sell more. But no other single handset is even close to selling as many units as the iPhone. Apple knows what they want to deliver to customers, and they are dictating where the market goes.
