I'm actually in the market for a messenger bag..eying the timbuk2 ones.

I was looking for the "HELL NO" voting option, but didn't see it.

Sorry, but in the warrior community in which I spend most of my time (this place being one of the large exceptions), anything metro or femme or even resembling, smelling like, or could possibly be inferred as remotely metro or femme and the person possessing would be ridiculed and lambasted and taunted and teased ad nauseum et ad infinitum.

I'm sure it would look good on you though, and be invaluable in obtaining the attention of hordes of women resulting in tons of p*ssy. No, really :D

Grow a pair and stop worrying about what other people think.

I have a backpack and a laptop bag. How the hell else are you supposed to deal with living in the city? It's the only practical way to to live here.

Wow, its funny what is considered a messenger bag....

Technically true. Most man-bags are just shoulder bags for men, not messenger bags. :p

I have a Manhattan Portage bike messenger bag, but my main bag is a canvas bag that I wouldn't consider "girly" at all.

I live in Melbourne, which is the home of Crumpler. Personally, I think Manhattan Portage bags are made from a tougher material than Crumpler bags, and would likely last longer. Buy Crumpler if you want it, but I'm just telling you about my opinion on durability.

You're getting this bag for work?

Wearing a backpack would make you look dorkalicious and unprofessional.

Get a briefcase, something on rollers, or a classy messenger bag.

I have an oil-cloth bag that I used for notebooks and books, but I switched to a backpack once I started carrying a DSLR and gear around.

As for being girly, my bag was patterned after 'sapper' bags used to carry explosives in WWI.

yes, i wear almost everyday. here in italy having a messenger bag/notebook bag is the norm, especially in offices, they are more professional/stylish than backpacks

i have a leather messenger bag from conbipel (an italian leather company) bought last year during summer sales for an absurdly low price (about 50€), this one:

the inside of the bag is soft and it won't protect against damage my macbook, so i simply slide inside the bag an incase sleeve for moving around with the notebook

i've been tempted to buy this (momo design, i can't find the exact model on the website):

and this (from lacoste, it's plastic and not leather):

anyway i have a couple of backpacks for carrying more heavy items like DSLR with me, a normal eastpak (bought like 10 years ago during high school, they REALLY are built to resist :D) and this is the last one i bought:

I currently want the incase shoulder bag. I like the messenger bag look that has one big flap over the compartments. Any other brands similar to that look?

This is one of the bags I use -
Alchemy Goods Pike

Made in Seattle from recycled bike innertubes. Extremely water resistant if you commute in a damp climate. It has an inner pocket that fits a 13" laptop or an iPad. They also have a lifetime warranty and since they manufacture and dont just design, Ag will repair any damage you can inflict.

No, I hate carrying bags and things around with me unless I absolutely have to. If I had to carry around a large laptop or something heavy I'd prefer a backpack to a messenger bag.

I have to confess I have 2 of these; a 13" for my MBA and an 11" for general use.

Ive been thinking about getting one as my backpack isn't always convenient on the subway etc. Especially when its packed with people (subway, not my bag). Something that tucks nicely under my arm would be easier and take up less room.

I used to be a messenger bag user back in college. Having my classes ingeniously spaced out every 4 hours, I only needed to carry a book or two to class and that was pretty much it.

Now though, that I'm a working man, I need to carry a bit more such as my laptop/iPad, P&S as well as a variety of odds/ends things. Simply put, it's too much to fit in a messenger bag without it looking like it's about to explode. So now I use backpacks which hold more stuff and is easier on my back

I still have a couple messengers however I can't recall the last time I used one. I guess it's to the individual as well as what you'll be carrying around. If you're only going to be toting around a couple things then a messenger bag should suffice.
