It happened to me three times on a road trip with my kids this summer. iOS 5 w/ Google Maps backend on my iPad and iPhone.

If I searched the exact address for my hotel, it gave me directions to my hotel. But when I searched for just the hotel name and city, it mapped the destination pin to a "Sponsored Link" for a different hotel that had paid Google for the privilege.

You'll note the lack of outrage on the part of the Google map defenders.

It has never happened to me, and I have used the Maps on the iPhone pretty often for the 4 years I've owned iPhones. That's why there is a lack of outrage on the part of the, "Google map defenders". Apple would do this also in a heartbeat, so why outrage if Apple would also do it.

You will see very little outrage, because I'm afraid this is a blatant attempt at flaming and completely inaccurate.

Yes Google has sponsored links, it does in all of it's products as a key aspect of its business model, but it absolutely does not force route you to another hotel / POI other than the one you've selected.

Not true, but feel free to defend Google at every turn. The flaw in the Google maps backend is that they have control over that functionality. And I couldn't be happier to see it go.

Yes I too have had poor experiences on Google maps. But you are not allowed to have poor experiences with Google Maps, only bad experiences with Apple maps.

I was asked for proof showing data (that was well over a year old) that I had bad directions from Google.
Was I supposed to have taken screen shots with the foresight knowing that someone on the internet needed proof that their beloved Google maps could be wrong?

So because I had no proof I was branded as a liar, because I didn't have a good experience with Google.

So people with Legitimate problems have to prove them otherwise Google didn't have a problem with their maps.

AI just did a comparison showing that Apple won't ask you to kill some cyclists in SF, like Google does: http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/25/inside_ios_6_whats_wrong_with_apples_new_maps/page/5

Yep. So it now appears that since Tim Cook himself has admitted that Apple Maps is a faulty/inferior product, it's safe to say that everyone in this thread that has been vigorously defending it (saying its better, there's nothing wrong with it, you're holding it wrong, etc.) is wrong.

Yep. And during the beta period there were complaints about us talking about how bad it was. "It's just a beta, they are going to turn everything on at release" they said, among other things.

i was trying to find it myself on google maps, but couldn't. i guess it doesn't exist

----------

they are bad in some countries, OK

in NYC i've used them and they are great

between apple maps, navigon and waze i have no reason to use google maps

So you're replacing 1 app with 3? Doesn't that tell you something?

Had were ever heard complaints about Google Maps in the past? Maybe some very rare posts here and there. Certainly not to the magnitude of complaints we are seeing now. Not even close.

Why is this? GMs certainly had flaws. It's not that GMs is immune to criticism. It's that we have taken such a huge step backwards with AMs. Its like we are going back in time. Like car being produced on the year 2012 with a tape deck and no AC. AMs is worse than the very first Google Maps app back in 2007. We shouldn't be going backwards.

iOS 5 i used waze most of the time
Navigon for when I need offline maps

iOS 6 apple maps has been pretty good for me. But I only need maps for traffic info. Unlike most people I can find my way to pick up my kids from school

What good is google maps for with no turn by turn?

You mean, besides the millions of people who don't drive and rely on their phone to get around cities?

Many 3rd party apps pull the map data from the Map Kit. Those apps were once using Google's Maps and are now forced on Apples.

My fitness apps track my running/ biking via GPS. Those displays are now useless because the underlying map is incorrect.

My real estate apps show me homes are on the market (and for what price) as well as the last known sale price of any home in an area. When the maps and addresses are wrong, it renders these types of apps completely useless.

Find My Phone/ Friends are equally useless.

Not everyone who used Google's Maps used them for Navigation... and, it's those of us who are hurting the most and are completely unaffected by the public apology and who can't simply download Waze or some other mapping app.

I live in NYC and Apple Maps on my iPhone 4 is a complete mess. Apple Maps is lethargic, choppy and just plain bad on iPhone 4 over Verizon's 3G network.

I rely on public transportation to commute and noticed that the MTA subway stations aren't even labeled. Seriously? How hard is it to label the subway station on 42nd Street? How are people who are brand new to NYC supposed to know what trains stop at that particular subway station?

I took the liberty of visiting the Apple store on 5th Ave. to try out Apple Maps on an iPhone 5 and boy-oh-boy. Completely different story. Apple Maps is much more smoother and easier to use. It's still broken. But Apple Maps is designed to work on iPhone 5...

Apple Maps on iPhone 4 is useless.

Yep, where I live maps is a disaster. It sucks, I used to rely heavily on Google Maps using my iPad and I haven't found a suitable replacement yet. Google Maps shortcut loads slow, isn't as functional, same with MapQuest and Bing.

****** what was Apple thinking. This wasn't all about the 'best user experience', had that been the case they'd of kept google maps an option or something along side their maps until ready.

What do I have to buy an Android tablet to get Google Maps ... that sucks even more. Going to buy Navigon and try that first I guess.

I've been looking for a suitable replacement for Apple Maps too. No cigar.

Bing and MapQuest are both poor. Google Maps browser shortcut isn't the same, either.

I relied heavily on Google Maps as I live in New York City. What recourse do I have now? Perhaps an Android.

Thanks a lot, Apple.

No, don't have to find an Android tablet, just have to find something that still runs 5.1.1

All those folks who upgraded to iPhone 5 had to sell their previous iPhone, right?

Sad state of affairs to have to hope to somehow roll back to 5.1.1

I think the iOS 6 mapping app is just fine. I've used it with great results in accuracy, turn by turn directions, and locating POI's. I don't see the hysteria but then again I live in average US cities.

Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works for EVERYBODY. Do you think we're all making this stuff up for the sake of it? And yes, we don't all live in Idaho either.

Calm down. He's allowed to leave his input just as much as anyone else. Just because he didn't have anything to add to the negative narrative doesn't mean we need to berate him.

It's nice to know that for at least some it isn't a huge ordeal. For me, I've held out on upgrading to iOS 6 because I don't want to lose my Google Maps. :)

I agree with HouD, EMAN needs to calm down.

I guess I fall into the "Seems to work just fine for me" crowd.

First time in San Diego, CA and all my friends have given me POIs to visit; like Phil's BBQ, The Apple Store @ Fashion Vally Center, PetCo Park and The Gaslamp District. Worked flawlessly for me.

I think SOME (noticed how I emphesized the word "some" in capital and bolde letters) people are complaining simply because the 3D Renderings are kinda wonky. So yeah, I think it's just bad PR.

I suppose a 100+ page thread is a bit much to read through, but I assure you the bulk of issues aren't over 3D renderings, but the actual maps being off, satellite images being useless (either cloud cover or extremely pitiful resolution), or them having no idea where the proper addresses should be.

If the majority of complaints were about the wonky 3D renderings or missing POI, it'd likely be nearing 1000 pages.

I posted the below comment a couple of days ago after someone asked to find a gas station and enter the correct address...

For those who want to play along at home, the address is:

856 Scarsdale Ave
Scarsdale, NY

It's in the center of the town, a suburb, and only 20 miles north of New York City.

For fun, I decided to follow your advice and search for a local gas station myself and simply use the address in the Maps App to route me.

Amazingly enough, it shows that there is a gas station on the pin. Unfortunately, the pin is NOWHERE near where it should be!

The other two gas stations it shows on the map? Not gas stations.

I don't need to calm down. And I wasn't berating him for not adding a negative narrative either. All I said was -- just because someone isn't having issues with Apple Apps doesn't mean it isn't faulty with someone else.

This Apple Apps debacle has been highly stressful for a lot of us who were very dependent on Google Maps. I'm highly aggravated at the situation, so don't get huffy with me.

So go get Android plastic phone and thats it.

Why should I have to spend money on a brand new phone because of Apple's mishap? It's not my fault that Apple screwed up.

If anything, Apple should allow us unhappy customers to roll back to iOS 5.1.1 for their poor customer service.

Nobody forced either to buy Apple phone or update to 6.0. Maps are working fine as well, and there is variety to choose from. As for Google spyware: if you can't live without it, why you then don't move to their platform? As for phone: just sell it and thats it.
