I use it now for turn-by-turn directions. I have two Garmin apps and Apple's beats them hands down.

i haven't used it for turn-by-turn directions because i have a dedicated gps unit in the car. my issue with apple maps is incorrect location of POIs, incorrect information listed for that POI (wrong phone number), missing POIs, and poor traffic information.

unless you have a mount for your phone in the car, i find it very inconvenient to use because you can't see the screen. spoken directions only can get you by in a pinch but if there's a confusing intersection and you can't see the screen, you're screwed.

You can on the iOS 5 Map App.

2nd result zoomed in to show accuracy.

I upgraded (if thats the term ;) ) to IOS6 so I only have the web browser based google maps on the laptop for comparison. If go to google.co.uk select maps and type in Bournemouth train station I get a load of businesses and things none of which are the train station. Although because google show the Railway station icon from a zoomed out position finding them by eye has never been a problem.

This may have been mentioned, but developers on this forum are reporting that iOS 6.1 beta introduces a much larger, "Report a Problem" button.

Hopefully this might be a precursor to a future announcement (that should have been part of the Tim Cook apology) where Apple will define the exact process & update timescales for user feedback on errors.

It needs to be quick, otherwise most people will not bother to submit corrections.

I actually reported several mistakes in my country since the betas but none seem to be fixed.

Some POI's have been updated in my area :)

I'm in the UK and it seems that Apple have just performed a Maps update to add new places, which is a start.

Many (not all) of the new locations I've added to Yelp have been included in this update, such as;

JK's Steak House, Blackpool
Stretford Balti, Manchester
New Rainbow, Urmston
Karahi Master, Stoke On Trent
Lahori Dera, Manchester
Raja Cafe, Manchester

Hopefully this update is a good sign of things to come.

EDIT: I should say, I only joined Yelp after the Maps partnership was announced, so these are all locations I added to Yelp within the last two months or so & that have appeared on Apple Maps very recently.

Look at my entire country, with 70% covered in clouds, which sort of resembles fungus. Can't see ****, & gets worse when you zoom in. Apparently Apple focused more on Western states than Asian ones :(

I must say I was surprised just now at how well Maps navigated from Heathrow to an address in Crowley given the poor reports in this forum.

It's been working fine in the US too.

Definitely seeing improvements- just got back from a second trip to Japan. It was useless on my trip 3 weeks ago, worked much better for directions this time. But still missing some very important POI's and detail in places like Tokyo.

Almost got 18 hours without a post...but glad to see it is positive...have been checking all over England and it looks like most of the "map" errors that were complained about on here have been corrected.

I'm sure poi's will follow, but probably still f'd up like they are in most places.

All the errors near me (large towns with wrong names and missing streets) are still there.

They have replaced the sat images with something usable now. Just a shame much if the imagery is 12 years old.

Maps has regressed for me after the recent update. Looking at my home was nice and up to date, with turn by turn working well. Now it shows the industrial land that predated my housing complex from four years ago.

I'm really annoyed, probably overly annoyed, but it's absolutely rubbish from apple.

It's just getting harder up recommend and defend Apple lately

I can't see clouds in nottingham but 2 other users local to me still see them. Only difference is I have a 5 and they have a 4s and a 4

Could a more gradual introduction of the features of the new mapping service have averted some of its more glaring shortcomings? Concentrate on vector imagery. Add roads and placenames. Make it beautiful, intuitive. Then start adding various POIs in a sensible manner. Release the application as-is. And only then do you start adding satellite imagery and glitzy features such as -sigh- Flyover? To me Maps' (and Apple's) current problems are redolent of cognitive overload: trying to process too much at once and in the end producing no satisfactory result. Is 'think different' no more?

What I can't understand is why do some people have such a terrible experience when using apple's maps, it works perfectly for me. I don't understand.

If the new maps placed your house in the middle of the woods, messed up a bunch of your local roads, and had virtually no POI in your area, you'd probably understand.

Be lucky you don't.

I see my area has been updated, it's clear now and shows my new driveway, which was done about 6 or 7 months ago... :)

Like others in this thread, I've seen issues, but had none myself... Sort of like the iPhone 4 antenna, could make the bars drop, but never actually suffered dropout...

I like Apple's Map app and for where I travel, it has detail. Yes, Google is more detailed, but Google wasn't always like that, when I was freelancing, it was trying to tell me the office I was trying to get to was about 2 miles from where it was and this office was huge (Sega UK), luckily I trusted MapQuest because it wasn't putting me in the middle of a housing estate :S

Very few parks, bike trails, or alleyways are mapped so, while it technically does have walking and bike options, they often want you to take the long (and dangerous) way and follow streets.

Yeah I wasn't 100% but I missed googles clearer interface so for now, in London, it's more helpful to me to get around (walking, using the underground).

----------

Just installed Maps+ to have a look.
No public transport support and no compass integration.
A rather non-intuitive interface.
Less useful than Google Maps web app.
Is it even worth contacting the developer to ask for improvements?
I suspect that Apple prevents competing map apps from accessing the compass.
And Google probably prevents competing apps accessing thr public transport API.

I'm pretty sure it has compass integration?? Have you added the icons ('Locate', 'Route', 'Track' etc) onto the screen from the options menu? Locate seems to have compass integration if I've understood what you meant (I'm guessing you mean what way you're facing?)

----------

My town in the UK now has train stations in IOS6 maps. So there have been some updates. Although you have to be fairly zoomed in to see them. Google is still better here showing the actual Railway station logo that has been used in the UK for decades, and from a more zoomed out position.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Incredibly frustrating. Getting rid of the Underground (Londons main transport facility and globally, quite a major city you would think) and National Rail logos is baffling and makes it, unnecessarily, that much harder to use and navigate.
