So let me get this straight. You believe its a downgrade to have turn by turn navigation? I'm not sure if you realize this or not but users are going to find that having turn by turn directions is definitely an upgrade over losing Street View.

It really isn't because turn by turn is already available for anyone who wants it in plenty of existing apps. Unless Google does make their own maps app (which I'm not saying they won't) there is no other way of getting streetview - a loss of functionality is a downgrade however you spin it.

lol, looking back at OP's point about "maps being a disaster". What a spoiled ass he sounds like. I just laughed at those pictures he posted up thinking "does this guy REALLY think apple is going to release an app where the entire image is a blur and that africa is labeled as an ocean?"

Apparently, "yes" as "all the data is in there because I'm following the Wikipedia definition of 'Beta' as the be all end all of definitions and so therefore, Apple should as well..."

You sure about that? :)

Switching oceans around was an obvious correction that needed doing.

Changing how streets are displayed and at what zoom level to show road names was a tweak that needed making and I'm sure they aren't finished yet.

Adding more POIs and yelp listings will continue to develop before and after the GM release.

Correcting the millions of mistakes like this picture, however, is a HUGE task.

Is that better or worst than Google that doesn't show it is anything more than a wide open barren space?

Google hasn't shown it as grass (yet)

Apple has (commendable) but has done it very badly...

My point was that if Apple ships a final product with errors like this it looks pretty amateurish but it is a ridiculous amount of work to find and correct all of these sorts of mistakes.

That's why there's a Report a Problem option, we find them all for them. They just have to fix them.

Agreed, but my point is, I would rather see that there is actually a park there (even if represented slightly off) than no indication at all.

I think I'd probably go the other way. I can accept that mapping the whole world can't happen instantly and in some places detail will be lacking.

If, however, you draw something onto your map you better make damn sure its in the right place!

As an extra note the town of Gillingham in Dorset seems to be labelled as Newbury which should be in Berkshire... Curious

I'm hoping this is no more than an error like the labeling ones that have occurred in B1 and since been fixed.

I'm trying to look past some of the details that are incorrect and appreciate the design of the maps...I like it better than Google. I expect data to be corrected before release.

Nah. The parkland is a polygon. Easily fixed.

----------

I'm going to eat my words.

Maps is FAR from perfect however the improvements so far have been significant. They've fixed my error report and side roads in hybrid mode no longer intrude into the centre of a major road.

The imagery is fixable in time (easily) and it appears that curves are in the vector based mapping now.

It's down to tweaks and fixing front end bugs. As long as the back end can handle the load. It's ready.

The maps are provided by TomTom, and TomTom is about to get a whole lot more error reports than they're used to. (Dashboard GPS devices don't give feedback.)

They'd better start hiring.

TomTom own a company called Tele-Atlas who provide that mapping to a lot of people. They receive plenty of feedback and are one of the two big mapping agencies of the world (the other being NavTeq). Their data is far from perfect, but they'll cope.

they should be data complete.

Maps are NEVER complete. The world is constantly changing, and so are maps. If you compare Apple Maps from today with Apple Maps from let's say a week ago you can see lot's of improvements. Give it some time...

----------

The back end needs months of load testing to prepare it for the onslaught.

And you really think that a billion dollar company that runs a server farm that provides millions and millions of app, song and movie downloads, billions of push notifications and much more to hundreds of millions of users every single day is not aware of that?

----------

Spot on.

Not only do I work in a GIS environment, but I am the one who tests the new versions of our software prior to deployment. We always use a full dataset (a full copy of our production server)

Right, and your dataset surely is as large as a map of the ENTIRE WORLD?

Very Informative

I cant resist adding my two cents. Thoroughly enjoyed all the comments. I am a long time windows (analyst/programmer) and android user who has switched totally to apple. As far as the maps go, i am alarmed at what it MIGHT mean for me(living in India and that too in a small town)
Google DOES cover it beautifully and i wonder if apple will ever bother with us ...:-(

Maybe they have Buster Bluth working as one of their cartographers.

Nice.

Personally I like the new Maps. It's easier for me to use Siri to set a route than open up my old GPS app and type everything in... I don't miss Streetview, as I only rarely used it. 3D/FlyOver sort of replaces it for me, but it would be nice to have Streetview as well.

Yes, they are a disaster. Especially on an iPhone 4, where we don't receive turn by turn or flyover, it feels like a complete downgrade. The routes it directs me on are longer and slower than Google Maps. The biggest problem for me though is the cartography. It's just inferior to Google Maps. Also, you have to really zoom in to see the street names, and the text is super thin and often unintelligible.

I'm not impressed.

After a month of using this, I can safely say that while I miss the street view, the tradeoff for turn-by-turn is well worth it. I find myself using it a lot.
