Now I love iOS as much as most people here, but I really must say I can't agree with Apple's decision to ditch Google Maps. From a user's point of view, we've lost a lot.
I live in Japan, and one thing in favor of Apple's maps is that they do load faster than Google's, and the scrolling is a bit better. However, I don't think it would be overstating it to say that 50% of the map data I once took advantage of is simply nonexistent in Apple's implementation. To make an analogy, Google's Tokyo is to a metropolis as Apple's Tokyo is to an idyllic country village.
Detailed information about public transportation is essential here. In addition to the loss of public transport directions, Apple maps do not even display station infrastructure in detail. Google Maps includes the location of numbered exits from stations, and also overlays the paths of underground tunnels and overhead walkways. For a massive station like Shinjuku, these features are indispensable. I rely on these features to make my way to appointments on time.
Tokyo also has many old winding alleys not fit for motor vehicles, as well as outdoor staircases leading to streets at different elevations. Apple maps display none of this.
I'm sorry, but as much as I love iOS, Apple's disagreements with Google has resulted in a great loss for users as far as maps go. The choice was not in the best interests of users. I'm going to have to agree with the original poster here.
