I understand that it's the data that is not upto scratch, but how can apple ever get it as good as google maps by this time next month?
If they don't have at least as good ariel photos as google and at least a basic POI search they'll be actually downgrading the value of the product.
They'll have to pull off something special in the next 30 days.
Ariel photos? Are you sure you are a software engineer?
Ariel is a washing powder or a fictional character, neither of them have a place in maps...

I hope that people complain a lot about iOS 6 like they did with the iphone 4 and antenna gate, enough that a lot of people start returning new iphones and apple is forced to give out free standalone GPS units to everyone. haha wishful thinking.

Google 3d party app

I hope Google has a Maps App ready in the App Store by the time iOS 6 launches.

This is a little dated but hopefully accurate. If there is a stand alone Google app I know I will probably have to use it. I am in Vietnam and the TomTom website shows no data for here. I will probably delay upgrading my iPad until I am sure a Google Maps app is available.

Yes, I have my degrees on my wall. I'm just rubbish at spelling and writing.

Hahaha!!!

I think he meant 'aerial'.

Yes I did. :p

And this is a multimillion dollar company. They'll be fine in a month. Stop comparing yourself.

I was comparing them to the company I work for. They're not a multi-billion dollar company like Apple but are multi-million.

Apple maps not quite suitable for major cities.

Now I love iOS as much as most people here, but I really must say I can't agree with Apple's decision to ditch Google Maps. From a user's point of view, we've lost a lot.

I live in Japan, and one thing in favor of Apple's maps is that they do load faster than Google's, and the scrolling is a bit better. However, I don't think it would be overstating it to say that 50% of the map data I once took advantage of is simply nonexistent in Apple's implementation. To make an analogy, Google's Tokyo is to a metropolis as Apple's Tokyo is to an idyllic country village.

Detailed information about public transportation is essential here. In addition to the loss of public transport directions, Apple maps do not even display station infrastructure in detail. Google Maps includes the location of numbered exits from stations, and also overlays the paths of underground tunnels and overhead walkways. For a massive station like Shinjuku, these features are indispensable. I rely on these features to make my way to appointments on time.

Tokyo also has many old winding alleys not fit for motor vehicles, as well as outdoor staircases leading to streets at different elevations. Apple maps display none of this.

I'm sorry, but as much as I love iOS, Apple's disagreements with Google has resulted in a great loss for users as far as maps go. The choice was not in the best interests of users. I'm going to have to agree with the original poster here.

Pics or it didn't happen. :p

you know that all you have to do is not update your iOS until the maps app is to your liking and your problems are solved.

Why such a long winded post regarding a Beta anyway? Just sTROLLing through & thought you'd stop for a quick critique?

Um, maybe because as of a couple of days, it was no longer in beta? Not defending the guy, but why should I as a user not update the rest of my phone just because of a crappy maps app. For people who truly need a good maps solution, Android phones are waiting.

Maps isn't critical for me, but it's a shame to lose all of that information.

After playing with Maps last night, I can't understand why when I search for "Jamaica" while looking in New York, it would take me to the country "Jamaica".

In other words, local search doesn't work well!

It did this with google maps as well.

NYC neighborhoods do not show up on maps like that though. They don't behave like you want on Google either. Type in any NYC neighborhood and it doesn't take you there. The only exception is that it will show a business if it has it in their name (ie: Greenpoint is in a lot of names).

I wouldn't consider it trolling to offer constructive and detailed criticism of an app. The gold master version isn't exactly a beta either considering it will be available to non-developers in a few days.

And why shouldn't I update iOS? There are plenty of great things about it that makes it completely worth upgrading.

I don't think I need pics - anyone can do a side by side comparison. Gizmodo and several other sites already have.

I buy Apple products because they enhance my experience as a user. But they have clearly taken a step back with Apple maps. I do not see how anyone could rationally say Apple's maps provide greater utility over Google's.

Users offer constructive criticism = better products from Apple in the future.

Apple stated specifically that they wouldn't be including public transportation information, so it should come as no surprise that it's not there. Google will eventually have their own maps app, at which point you can get what you need. It is a loss, but like their YouTube app, Apple's current Maps app is far behind using Google's mobile maps website in Safari or Chrome.

Maps is a true disaster in Indian Cities; And with no Google Maps, looking like my phone just went 2-3 years back in terms of Maps ...

and was reading few articles, looks like no resolution in the near forceable future

:mad::mad::mad:

to me this is yet another reason why Apple needs to strip away all these core apps from the os and update them threw the App store.
Sorry but having to an entire update to update the piss poor maps is not acceptable.

They do not need to update the phone to update the maps.

For those of you not happy with Apple's apps, you can always just make a Google Maps web app on your home screen. Yes, it's not as fast as the native app, but I just use that to look up public transit info when I need it.

Yeah man totally. We can't even get the directions. That's pretty bad.

I really dislike the Apple Maps app. It is ugly, performance is sluggish (Google Maps much more smooth) and shows less information than Google Maps on the same zoom level. Google Maps is just more pleasant to use. I like iOS 6, but I also can't wait for Google to release their own native Maps app.

I'd just like to point out that beta is the process where bugs are fixed and performance improved. Beta is not the process for adding new features.

And how do you suppose "new features" are tested en-masse to make sure they're functional and don't create new bugs? Of course features are added in beta.

Apple maps are ok so far, but still have plenty room for improvement. Hopefully they're still using the maps data from the beta and they can just flip a switch server-side and fix some of the problems.

Apple have added features in beta before - but I would agree that that is what generally happens in beta.
