Once nice new feature of Apple Maps is that you can start typing the name of a contact and it will list his/her address. You couldn't do that in Google Maps, which was unfortunate.

Yeaaaa but Maps show it 2 km wrong on the map...

Just noticed. Airplay to my AppleTV is ALSO DEAD. Thank youuuu Apple for releasing a complete beta OS ?

Some people call iOS 6 a disappointment, and to some degree I have to agree. The Apple Maps app highlights this like no other new iOS 6 feature. It looks like Apple jumped the gun on this one, releasing it at least a year or two too early. Maybe iOS 7 will take Apple Maps out of beta.

first, i don't appreciate the myopic mocking of those that take issue with those of us that don't like the maps. i'm not some android fanboy that's just seizing an opportunity to hate on the man. i've got 7 different devices that have an apple logo on them so i should be able to voice my opinion without some mac zealot calling me a heretic.

the maps are terrible. no street view is pathetic. especially since the there isn't a good flyover option so far for me. of course, i do live in a little town named chicago so it may take a while for them to get to it after getting the big cities done.

no public transit directions. takes me to the app store to let me find my own way.

and for those of you saying, "just use google maps if you like it so much," really? that's your defense? we had a perfectly good map that was nicely integrated into siri, contacts, yelp, etc. now we have to independently find our way to google maps, cut and past addresses, etc. if we want to see what the place looks like or want to take the train or bus. ugh.

This guy at Waze is EXACTLY right:

http://news.yahoo.com/apple-partner-says-maps-app-ios-6-terrible-230554154.html

“Apple went out and partnered with the weakest player,” he said. “They’re now coming out with the lowest, weakest data set and they’re competing against Google, which has the highest data set. What’s going to happen with the Apple maps, is that you’re literally not going to find things. When you do find them, they might be in the wrong place or position geographically. And if you do have it, the route to it may not be the optimal route.”

Something I have been going on about for a while. It's odd that all the POIs are mostly closed or outdated names. It's like Yelp sold Apple the old crud data.

You might have a point.

As a test, I've been walking round my local village tonight, comparing the POI information on Apple's new Maps App against the same locations on http://maps.google.co.uk

There is significantly more information, more POIs and more businesses on the Google site than there is in the Apple Maps App.

For example - in Apple's App, several local businesses are shown completely in the wrong place (several streets away) whilst being correct in Google.

Also, there are some businesses as POIs in Apple's App that are no longer there (they've either moved, or gone out of business).

My local Pub for example, has been on the same site for (around) 80 years, but it doesn't exist according to Apple's App, but in Google, it's right there, on the correct site where it's always been.

I did notice in the Apple App there is a "Report a Problem" link (if you swipe the map up from the bottom right-corner to see the options) so I've reported the "missing" pub and a couple of other sites - I will be interested to see if they eventually appear?!

That guy nailed it. Apple went cheap with their new maps app and it shows. Hopefully, Google will release their app soon, but I wouldn't blame them if they waited a few months to let iOS users get a good "bitter taste" from Apple's new app. I hope Apple doesn't have a few more failures up their sleeves and they need to make this a priority for iOS 7, even if that means changing partners.

I've read on a couple of sites that the only chance Apple has is to go back to Google with their tail between their legs :p

At the moment their navigation isn't, well, helping people navigate very well.

Yeeeah at this point I just moved Google maps to my home screen. It's a pain that I have to use Safari to use it now, and there will be no smooth integration with Siri or other apps, which is incredibly frustrating.

Is there a way to access Apple's maps through the web? part of Google's appeal is that I could jump on a computer (before I leave) find what I want, look at traffic in Google, and then send the route to my phone. If you can't do that in Apple's Maps that will be a big let down. Plus, having web access is part of how Google collects some of it's meta data.

Within a few weeks we should have a (much improved, akin to YouTube) Google Maps app from Google to hold us over.

Within a year, Apple Maps should catch up to Google Maps in terms of map data quality. But it will surpass it greatly in terms of integration with the Apple ecosystem. Siri, turn-by-turn, directions, will work much better with Apple Maps than they have when it was Google Maps.

Some short term losses for long term gains. I'll take 'em, happily.

posts like this drive me crazy. it's not an either/or situation.

how 'bout instead of feeding us a sh$t sandwich while they work on the app, they let us keep the app that was working perfectly until they are able to come up with something that actually works.

where I live is also blurry.
You know, I wish Apple would lay off the gimmicky 3D maps and just get the main stuff sorted out like 2D maps and satellite view. Once that's sorted, then add stuff like 3D buildings, similar to Google. But I feel Apple are trying to jump the gun and just show off what the device can do rather than making something that is practically useful.

I have no doubt they will improve it over time, but really this is released way before it should have been.

I found a bit of mixed results after finally playing with Apple Maps. To me it seems a bit more like Apple "Earth".

I say this due to not only it's inconsistencies with other mapping software but there were some surprisingly better 3D models.

Used both apps on my iPhone 4S and while it looks like Apple is starting from the California Bay Area on out wards a few things caught my attention.

If you compare building models from Google Earth and then use Apple Maps, extra detail has been added that a height map just can't pick up

I was going to upload the screen captures from my iPhone but I guess they're either too large of a file but one shot from Vegas got my attention.

Note the sign, quite a bit of work has gone into these 3D models for a mobile app. Glide on over to the Hoover Dam though and prepare for complete disgust.

Wrong images are loading or not loading. If you have the time, take a closer look between apps. Cue one fix up for Safari on iOS.

Totally agree with the consensus on this. I am not one to jump on minor faults but my experience of the new maps app is very poor. Low res, black and white photography, the loss of street view and poor labeling make this a let down and a step backwards in quality.

Apple should have waited longer before swapping from Google. A rare misstep I believe, but one which will have an impact on customer experience.

Can someone please explain to me how I can do the automatic flyover? I've tried entering POIs for the supported cities and still can't get it. I even watched Forstall's keynote and entered in the TransAmerica Pyramid, just like he did, and mine only shows the 3D rendering...not the actual automatic flyover where you get the 360degree rotation. What am I doing wrong? It's literally the only thing I would like about the new Maps and I can't get it to work.

Are we really expecting this to be up to par with Google maps at first? Something like this takes a lot of time! Mapping the world is a pretty big endeavor...

people keep saying this, but that is not the point.

Goggle were pretty much the pioneers of good web based mapping and they took the lead and give us what we have now.

You are talking as if Apple know nothing about mapping and need to figure out what people want.

Apple can just look at the quality of other mapping solutions and know they need to make theirs at least as good as those.

They don't need to reinvent mapping.

Apple have never made televisions. When they do will people be happy with a TV that not as good as TV's from 10 years ago? Of course not. They will expect Apple's effort to be better than the current ones.

When you move into a market you need to be better than the competition.

Apple know they have a captive market almost so that is why they release this piece of crap.

I am not going to say this would never have happened under Steve's control, but I would be interested to know what Steve would have thought of this.

I think you can open up google maps in safari and then add to home screen.

It's not the same. Not as fast as it used to be as standalone and you can't rotate the maps in safari google maps.

The new maps app not only has terrible maps, it's slow and laggy too.

Clinton cards is in the water apparently.

My city has the flagship Sainsburys store in the UK...not on the map.

At least two other large supermarkets are missing too.

These maps are an abomination and Apple should be ashamed.

So tell Google to hurry up and make a Google Maps app for iOS, yo. Then tell Apple to hurry in approving it.
