Maps is one of those apps I want to always be able to count on.

I guess I won't be upgrading until Apple gets their stuff together.
Thanks macrumors!

Don't really understand the issues.
Maps covers 90% of the civilized world where Apple makes 99.99% of their sales.

Some short term losses for long term gains. I'll take 'em, happily.

It's not a long term gain if people switch platforms because one of the core functions of a smartphone doesn't work. Personally, I rely on search in the iOS Maps app a LOT; if I can't find a good app that can replace the same functionality, there's a good chance I'll be selling my iPhone 5 to switch to something Android (ugh).

As a side note, I have my own small business and work with another. As part of that community, I absolutely HATE Yelp. Their searches are highly influenced by how much money businesses pay to Yelp for premium placement and promotion, and such services are really ruinously expensive for what you get. Although Google does offer paid placement in their search results, as far as I know, that's not part of their mapping algorithm. (If it is, I'd love to know. I have zero confidence in Yelp searches because I know that there very readily could be a good fit for any search term that's closer and of better quality, but who failed to pay Yelp their extortion fee.)

Turn-by-turn directions sucks.

I did a simple test of it to my local grocery store just 2 miles away. Its supposed to be a straight forward route.

1) It tried to make me go through all sorts of residential streets instead of the main road

2) When I decided to ignore its suggestions, it didn't even try to re-route me. It just kept spewing out turn instructions that werent anywhere near me.

I'm really disappointed, but have faith that things will improve.

The ****? What did you expect when searching for iphone on a maps app?

If you are asking that question seriously then you have been missing one of the very powerful feature of Google maps, finding things. That Apple's own app doesn't suggest places to buy Apple gear is really sad. If I search for Macbook in iOS 6, I get 0 results. In iOS 5, I get about 12 results, one of which is the closest Apple store.

A bit of detective work and I was able to find where you are screen capping. I'm running a 4S on 5.1.1, this is what the maps show for me:

Where is the water way Google says is there?

It's too small to see from a satellite. You made the case worse for Apple though.

I took my dog for a walk over here and snap a shot. Here is the water way.

And here is where I'm standing and took the pic. No water way on the apple map.

Contrary to "popular" belief (which is 90% apparently), the US does not consist the majority of the civilized world. Even then, there are still numerous mistakes. Just look at all the posts in this thread. And unless you happen to be a stockholder living in a major US city, or use an Android phone, where Apple makes 99.99% of their sales is completely irrelevant to you, the end user, getting the most utility out of your smartphone.

How does one change the angle of the 3D view. I've done it once by accident but I don't exactly know how to manipulate it

Incomplete Maps = Useless

Yes the new Apple maps cover 90% of the world, but with much less detail than Google maps. For example, I live in a small college town and the Google maps show me the buildings on the college campus, the large streams flowing through the area, many more points of interest, bike paths, terrain topography and more. It is all the information contained in a map that makes it useful. Apple should be ashamed of what they have released, but the one positive note is that the vector graphics paint the screen faster.

personally i loved street view more than any other feature, besides accurate directions of course. flyover is cool and all but wtf do i care about the top of a building if i'm on a sidewalk looking for a landmark?

On Google Maps, it will actually search businesses and give you relevant information. On Apple Maps are we only allowed to search for cities now?

My mistake, didn't know that. Yeah Maps is not as bad as I thought, but still prefer google at this point I think

Thats exactly the point.
Is Apple going to spend their time rolling out V1 with a "small college town" or San Francisco? Some dirt road village in India or New York?

You guys act like this product has been on the market for 8 years.
The removal of Gallery was a far worse "update" than this Maps "disaster".

I kinda dig the new Maps. Only thing seems missing that I care about is transit, but I'll bet Apple adds that in at a later date.

The app is gorgeous, the 3D flyovers are awesome, refresh rate is excellent.

All we are saying is give Maps a chance!

It gets better. ;-)

Help a Brit out here. Is this why the people in the middle bits hate the people on the edge bits?

Two fingers on the screen and drag them down like you are maturing trying to tilt the image.

After all of the bitchin' and moanin' on this thread, I have to say...I'm impressed as hell with Maps.

One thing I did check since it was a recent post, Shinjuku station does show the detail that the author was looking for...Google just shows the detail he was looking for when zoomed out further. Showing side by side Google and Apple Maps pics really isn't fair. Apple obviously felt that detailed info should only be visible when zooming in slightly closer to a poi to make it more legible...and I agree...looks great.

They should really ban some people from using BETA software...they should start with the OP.

You act like Apple can't update the maps before GM is released.

3 months later, it's still crap.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: back to you
