My town (Luton) is one of the largest towns in the country and is about 30 miles north of London. Apple Maps thinks it's 300 miles away by the sea.

Apple Maps is so bad it's starting to become quite funny.

To add insult to injury not only does maps say I live in the wrong town. The town they have said I live in they have spelt it wrong lol what a joke

And yet in a minute someone will pop up and tell us that it's actually really good. An improvement, even! And anyway, it will all be sorted out by Monday.

One of the most surprising things is that Apple Maps seems incapable of accurately depicting lakes, rivers, coastline etc. It all seems to be either bent out of shape, a simplified shape, or the dimensions are just plain wrong. There are small rivers near me that are no more than 10 feet wide that are shown as 50+ feet wide on the map. Lakes are squared off or simplified so that in some places, according to Apple you would be standing in it when you're not, in other places you could be swimming in the lake and shown on land. It's extraordinary that they can't even seem to get that right. You would think accuracy of unchanging geological features would be a given.

Has anyone gone back to the beginning of the thread and read all the "don't worry, Apple will fix it for sure" posts??

Its a good laugh.
Those of us who work in software development just ignored those apologists ;) Fact is Apple started on this project 5 years ago according to some sources. The idea that it would suddenly mature into a usable equivalent of the old app in just the last couple of months was absurd.

Is Luton really one of the largest towns in the country? In fairness to apple, moving to the seaside would probably improve the place

Ok really...what the hell apple. You took away google maps and gave us this?

Stores and shopping centers that before easily came up with google maps are nowhere to be found, I am one mile away from my house, and ask for directions to it, and they have me going 20 miles out of my way to go the one mile home.

I havnet read all the replies in thread, but what apple fanboy could possible defend this boneheaded move?

Apple Satellite Maps are old

Guess I will miss Google Sat maps in the respect that they are not as current.

When I zoom in on my house I see it is not near as current as the Google satellite version. Apple show what my lawn looked like month and months ago where the Google version is current!:(

Saw a job posting at Apple for "Map Navigation Software Engineer" a few hours ago, figured people that might like to apply would say something like "I'm trying to apply for a job at Apple HQ but I just got an iPhone 5 with iOS 6 and I can't find your headquarters on Apple Maps."

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. :)

700+ news stories on maps now, including most major news outlets. Ouch.

Geez, you know this is a good way to see which sites give accurate unbiased views.

Amazing how some sites try to play it off as good, specifically cnet. The idiot thinks Apple got him to his destination just fine... except it sent him to a completely different parking lot.

I personally am glad this fall out has happened, it will make Apple think twice about releasing half finished products in the future and perhaps improve their quality control.

Amazing.. Apple putting their little Google rivalry as a larger priority than customer satisfaction.

I hope this complete and utter disaster serves up Apple a large helping of humble pie. On top of all the errors, this manual '3D' overlay looks like a hack job from a cheap 90s video game. I'd rather have a clear, accurate satellite view than this mess any day.

It takes years...

I can't recall how Google Maps looked at first, but I'm sure that thanks to millions of people testing/using the app, it has improved over time.

Such an important and huge app as Maps build from scratch needs heavy testing, something that it doesn't get from Apple employees, no matter how many years they test it, but from real world users/customers.

So to expect it to be as good or even better as Google Maps is not very realistic at all, not even for a company like Apple.

I'm not trying to 'defend' Apple here or anything, just being realistic.

It is absolutely true that it takes lots of time and user feedback to produce a top flight mapping database and application. That shows the folly of Apple's decision to unleash this debacle of an app in their flagship product line as a major component of an os update.

What would have made much more sense was to quietly release its mapping service on the web and mobile as (excuse the Google terminology) a "lab" project where users could optionally use it and refinements could take place in a low profile manner. Both Google and Microsoft took this costly, time consuming path for a reason.

Wouldn't the easiest and best thing to have done was allow google to submit their map app, approve it, then overlay apples navigation with Siri integration?

I complained about apple's map, because some of the searches didn't bring up what googles would. However, my satellite view is better with apples than googles, And when I used it to get to a gig in an area I had never been to before, it performed flawlessly. I was impressed with the improved GPS locating. On google's map it wouldn't track me as we'll and I'd miss a turn. The apple one had it down. It was impressive. So props for that. Hopefully they iron out the rest. In the meantime, the google browser app works as a good supplement.
