Apple gives Dublin a new "airfield"

This appeared in the Irish Times

Sorry to say, but this is bad. In fact, some parts of Ireland are very badly covered in apple maps. Google maps were doing a great job. I never thought I would say that.
That is not an airfield, it is a farm!!!!

The fundamental problem with the new Apple maps is lack of information density compared to Google's mature product. There are many issues in big markets too, it's just more apparent in a smaller town.

The time on the market makes no difference. When the world's most valuable company makes a change to one of the most important features of it's product it had better work well from day 1!

I can't recall how Google Maps looked at first, but I'm sure that thanks to millions of people testing/using the app, it has improved over time.

Such an important and huge app as Maps build from scratch needs heavy testing, something that it doesn't get from Apple employees, no matter how many years they test it, but from real world users/customers.

So to expect it to be as good or even better as Google Maps is not very realistic at all, not even for a company like Apple.

I'm not trying to 'defend' Apple here or anything, just being realistic.

Ya know what then, don't blow smoke up my ass and tell me "it just works". You don't have to control EVERYTHING. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Why would it 'just work'? I believe it's quite obvious that a new Maps app just wouldn't work perfectly straight ahead.

I'm sure Google soon will get their Maps approved by Apple, so we all have the option to choose.

My iPad 2 is rock solid on iOS5.
Even the 3GS, a four year old device, gets iOS6.

You just made my argument. My iPad 1 isn't even 4 yrs old.

A more relevant question for you. Has your iPad 1 stopped working just because iOS 6 isn't available on it? Why would you dump it just ecause of that? You got three OSes on your original ipad, 3 4 and 5, so obviously Apple isn't forcing you to upgrade every year.
:(

I see you did some homework before you felt you needed to post. There's only about 300 pages of posts of iPad 1 AND 2 owners that are having horrible crashing issues, you are either lucky, or you don't do a lot of multi-tasking on Safari, since that is when it happens.... And since they are no longer supporting the iPad 1, I can pretty safely assume they aren't going to eer address it..

Why would you be surprised that ATT only offers the 16GB 4S now that the 5 is out? They only offered the 4 in 8GB once the 4S was out, and once the iPad3 was out, they only offered the iPad2 in the smallest size.

I just was... Especially since the 4S was really just in between the 4 and 5. And there is a pretty big difference between the 4 and 4S, the 4S surely using more memory due to the camera alone.

I might as well complain that Nissan is forcing me to upgrade my car each time they redesign it. Oh wait, my car works just like it did before the update.

WTF does a car have to do with an electronic device? How are they even in the same conversation.

It is purely apples implementation, they should just ask TomTom to use their app natively. TomTom's app is better by a mile.

Apple only uses TomTom data in the US so it would do very little to fix the problems around the world. And it is using Yelp to get POIs in the US and they are extremely unreliable outside major cities. It not a matter for fixing it. The providers they picked just don't have the data and/or it is inaccurate.

That's poor on apples part because Tom Tom app is a lot better than apples own.

Apples great excuse again for an awful product (first time I've ever thought anything apple is truly awful)

I have a problem with the lack of contrast between the roads/streets and the background. The new map app is much hardere for me to read in good light conditions. It will be impossible in the car, I'm afraid.

It really makes me wonder whether any of the Apple High Mucketeys who did the presentation last week actually tried to USE the Map App before they released this POS...

Has anyone gone back to the beginning of the thread and read all the "don't worry, Apple will fix it for sure" posts??

Its a good laugh.

Yea I have been chuckling about that. I said they'd be crap from day 1 of the beta and everyone told me to shut up. Apple would surely flip some magical switch by release.

I get it, Google has had years and a much larger database of users to work with, and I know they are no longer playing nice with apple, but Jesus....
The main problem for me is that Apple's maps is that it has this very cobbled together feel. A little from this, a little from that. Especially the satellite photos. It's like looking at a quilt. Blurry, grey, black and white, and all within the same city.
It's like a nine year old computer science project in some instances.

And that's where Apple is going to run into issues. Google will always be ahead. Why? Because it's the ubiquitous standard. It's the Kleenex of web based maps. Apple will forever be playing catch up.

Apple maps is a disaster!!! Why they would throw out such a seamless experience from Google Maps to preload such a poor map service on iOS6 is beyond me. Some of the major mistakes people posted online are hilarious, iOS6 is the laughing stock of the tech community!

First Siri and now Apple Maps. Apple is getting a reputation for releasing beta products that simply don't work.

I picked up my iphone5 today and am extremely disappointed in the above + the absense of NFC. I feel like I am using technology that is 10 years old, we will all be using credit cards while the rest of the known world moves onto NFC payment technology.

I never thought I would say it but think it's time to toss this "smart" phone in the bin and invest in a Samsung Galaxy S3. Saves me reaching for my GF's one every time my iphone can't complete a simple task.

I made the mistake of upgrading to iOS 6. I soon realized that mistake and downgraded back to iOS 5.1.1. Dear God I almost shed tears of joy when I saw my native Google Maps again.

It was like losing your puppy as a child.

:( maps sucks big time. Seriously. Why release a product that is not finished.... this is so dumb I hope google can get theirs in the app store... shoot if they give the android maps version i will pay a buck for it.

we don't care though about siri. we did not already have something innovative like that.. it was new. Google maps had it all and now apple is givings us something with nothing. Seriously no transit times and like no tags on businesses.

My comment was sarcasm. I was responding to someone who was trying to state that Apple only release completely tested and solid products and would never put out a half A$$ed product. I agree that Siri wasn't very good when it was released, but has gotten better over time. Hopefully, Maps can repeat that.
