Barely anything for the iPod touch except color white.
Not even a camera to replace the 0.7MP one :(

its like Apple didnt even try this year, this event was absolutely horrendous
As for the other ipods, no updates to classic or click wheel for nano and shuffle remained the same. It may be just be coincidental but since Jobs resigned Apple is starting to look bad.

That's because the event was mainly for the iPhone. The iPhone was due for an update more than the iPod Touch and the rest of the iPods needed....

Was it not obvious with the invitation, "Let's Talk iPhone"?

The event name is obvious, the fact that there were almost no updates to the iPod line is the problem here. Apple never had to worry about iPods getting more updates than the iPhone. (Circa 2010 ipod and iphone had retina display)
Apple just didn't care about iPods this year, they stopped innovating and adding to their premier products which is why we all have problems with it.

Ok, so which pocket sized hand held computer for only $200 are you going to buy because they kept the one that works great the same?

Until there is a product about to approach or beat the current iTouch any changes are going to be minimal at best. You can bet that Apple does have the next killer iTouch generation all set to go, and when their market share is threatened it will hit the market in a heart beat. These guys know what they are doing and are not going to reveal their hand until necessary. That's just good business. Want to dump your apple OS out of spite I hear that you can pick up a Zune at a great fire sale price.

To those complaining that they want to push you to an iPhone let me pose this question, if your carrying a cell phone and an iTouch after October 14 you either are with T-Mobile or locked iinto a contract you can't break, right? Otherwise why wouldn't you have an iPhone now that they are available on virtually every carrier?

Me, I am going to continue to enjoy my iTouch 3G when my iPad is not practical. Unfortunately the company I work for and provides my free cell phone has not moved to iPhones yet, but they did give me an iPad.

Get over it, you have the best mobile device available if it runs iOS5.

You won. Debate over. Let's all just go watch some football or something now..

They didn't stop innovating the iPod. There's always next year. The innovation at this event was the iPhone. The iPod was not due for an update as much, which is why the iPods had minor updates. Next year, the iPod will be updated like the iPhone was. I guess the problem here is that you expected more from the iPod's than iPhone. Just wait for next year.

Now you're just making stuff up.
We have usually had a Touch upgrade in the Fall after the iPhone upgrade in the Summer. Last year the Touch upgraded to the A4 after the summer intro of the iPhone4. It's been pretty consistent so there was a reasonable expectation of a Touch upgrade after we knew that the iPhone would have an A5. So don't say the Touch was not due for an update, it was but things got crazy different this year. I expect the iPhone5 to come out at the usual time next year and that we would return to a Fall event for media devices such as iPods, Touches and AppleTV's.

Using your logic, wouldn't it be safe to assume that an updated iPod Touch will debut sometime in the next coming months? You say that it follows the iPhone, i agree, it always does. I don't get why so many people are jumping ship just because there wasn't an updated iPod Touch at a Keynote for the iPhone. Usually, the iPods have their own keynote. Don't be surprised if you see an iPod Touch with an A5 chip sooner than you think.

Considering the iPhone was released several months later than usual perhaps the iPods will get updated later in early 2012 as well.

However, considering they talked about iPods during the iPhone event tells me that it was the iPod updates.

I don't think there'll be an update anytime soon. If there was, Apple wouldn't have mentioned the iPod Touch white version in the last keynote.

Here's the key problem with iPod Touch: good luck trying to jump ship since there's nowhere else to go. The PDA market is all but dead. Samsung and Phillips tried their luck with Android devices but neither of them has done all that hot. Yes there are Archos and Cowon players but I'm not sure if you'd want them. Others just cannot make devices that can match iPod Touch's quality at that price.

Also think of this way. Any A5 chip that gets used for iPod Touch means less chips available for iPhone and iPad, which are now much more important and Apple will try everything to make sure they can make as many iPhone as possible, which might also affected iPod Touch not getting the new A5 chip.

It's sad but it'll probably only get worse from here on for iPod Touch. :(

I think that is actually the main reason why the iPod Touch didn't get updated yet..its only common sense that the products that make you the most money are first priority.

Though I think there is still a market for iPod Touch, they still sell well and they bring apple profit via iTunes (App store). I don't think they are going to not update the device anymore but I definitely think it is on a lower priority.

There appears to be good reason to suspect Apple is going to put the A5 in the ATV
http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/07/apple-outs-more-powerful-apple-tv-dual-core-a5-in-ios-5-file-system/

But they couldn't put it in the Touch?? I speculated this summer on the possibility that Apple would be dropping the Touch when iPhones would become cheap enough. I said the sign would be when they stop updating it and just milk it for what ever they could get for it.
That's what sucks. The A5 has the best GPU of any SoC right now and with Apple claiming the iPod touch is the most popular handheld gaming device - you'd think they would put a better SoC for better gaming. I'm sure most people would be happy if that's the only thing that was changed instead of an additional freaking color.

I've had my iPod touch (most recent version) since it launched. I've had zero issues with speed of it, or how things load/play. Rarely experienced an app crash. I'm kinda relieved they didn't update it at all this year, since I can use my money for the already loaded holiday season of gaming/kindles, etc.

Really?

It takes a year to have a white option?

It takes a year to drop price to 199$?

Read what you wrote, if you actually think that 1 year is needed for this, you do not work efficiently then.

Now you are further embarrassing yourself.Apple made the decision to release the products as they have a year ago.He didn't say"it took a year"Implying it couldn't be done. You just don't like Apple's choice.Get a Ouija board and send Steve an angry email.

----------

The ipod touch was updated EVERY year.
Not ALL models had updates in each year.

Apple has always updated the touch so that customers from the previous generation could upgrade to the next. Rumors were was that the touch would have MINOR updates, reasoned and well described depends on each person's analysis.

Apple receives recurring iTunes music money and App store money from iPhone users.

LOL and how is that different from the iPod touch exactly??

Learn about them, thanks.

Steve passed away on October 5, 2011, surely an apple fanboy would know that....

Which was the sarcasm and which was the rhetorical question? It just looked like goofy to me.

If you didn't mean this literally you need to brush up on your sarcasm:

"Read what you wrote, if you actually think that 1 year is needed for this, you do not work efficiently then."

LOL Fail

ITT: An angry, 10-year-old, XP user bashes Apple for focusing on the device that makes them the most money and only minority updating the next most popular device (which is basically a handcuffed version of the other). Others reply, most contradict themselves and nobody (but for one or two) seems to understand that maybe, just maybe, after the Holiday rush Apple will be able to focus on an update for that next device.

Also, people are butthurt that some made a Ouija Board joke (which went right over OP's head, good show) about a guy who died. It's not disrespectful to him. I admired Steve quite a bit and I laugh. Had it been an attack on him as a person, you'd have a right to be upset.

They most likely introduced the white Touch as an attempt to move some product over the next couple months until the demand for the 4S (and, as such, the A5) has been sufficiently met. I would be unsurprised if, in January, there is an event to update the iPod line. Bad timing, yes, but relatively likely.

Off-Topic: MySpace's influence of the past (and whatever influences people now...Facebook/Twitter, I suppose) has made this generation believe that one-sentence paragraphs are a perfectly normal thing.

I don't agree.

But then, that's just me.

Oh well.

And you do realize no one under the ages of 13 are allowed an account on this forum. Fail.

I for one bought the white iPod touch just because the color, it does suck that there isn't any major updates but who cares the iPod is doing a great job for the time being! Listening to music in my car by hooking it up to my NAV Kenwood system. It works like a beauty ;)

So yea White iPod touch rocks! it completes my white collection iPad 2, iPhone 4 :D

I am glad they did not announce a phase out of Ipod Classic or shuffle, like was previously rumored. I am mad that they didn't increase the HD on the ipod touch. I ve got a ipod V5.5 80gig, and id like to consider getting a touch but not at $399 and certainly not with only a 60gig HD. Apple needs to address this issue and increase the capacity across the Ipod Touch line, and possibly lower the price.

I have to admit, the iPod Touch was totally ignored this year.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic device, BUT they could have shuffled it about a little more.

e.g. readjust the price points, eliminate the 8gb model and replace with a 16gb one (srsly, 8gb is pretty crappy...), change the headphones a little or add accessories...

As a stand alone device, it's pretty cool and if I get another phone this year to replace my iP4, I'll get one for my iOS fix, but...yeah it was hardly worth them mentioning it in the keynote.

The white iPod Touch came out already?
The release date on Apple is on October 12...How did you get it earlier?

Prices should be in increments of 50$

199- 8/16
249-32
299-64

399 for a handheld device that doesn't even run Mac OS, I don't see how anyone can justify that price. Especially when standard commercial laptops can be had for 399 and under.

I find it interesting that Apple doesn't specify which processor it has on their site. Before the event it showed the A4.

There is a much higher chance of 512MB RAM rather than A5. Like others, Apple would have announced A5 and it does make sense that A5 for the iPod touch would constrict supplies as iPhone4S is still being built.
