I really can't understand why so many of these comments are saying "if they got rid of the chin then it'd have to be thicker". Like... ok? So what? This isn't a pocket device that needs to be slim. It's a desktop computer. IDGAF if it's 5mm thicker as an alternative to having a massive blank chin. Does anyone?

When I first saw the iMac revealed it immediately looked like a fake IKEA prop. This design is so fugly.

What an ugly piece of crap.

The silver version is the least offensive but it's still ruined by the white bezels and lack of Apple logo.

I remember hating the 7th gen iPod nano design and 10 years later they used it for the iMac. 🤢

I don't even understand how this got approved. You don't even need a Steve Jobs or Jony Ive to tell you how poor this design is.
Diff’rent strokes for different folks. I think these look fantastic. Reminiscent of the candy motif of the original iMacs.

I think it looks great. Not perfect, but way better than any competing computer or any previous iMac. Suspect the higher end ones will have a dark grey / black option and more ports. For most people these will be really awesome machines for most work or home tasks.

I’m a bit surprised that the chin remains. Suspect it isn’t about the computer hardware, but rather the speakers. If essentially the same hardware can fit in an iPad that’s half the thickness, it would seem to be not much more difficult to fit it into the thickness of the iMac.

Honestly though, I don’t care. If I needed a neat and compact home computer with minimal cables then I’d go for it in a heart beat. Great for kids or a shared family machine.

I actually quite like the design tbh, but I do agree with you, it'd be better without the chin and I'd be really interested in hearing what the actual justification for it is given that there's no deficit at all to the computer being a centimetre thicker.

Everybody said it would be a giant iPad with small bezels. Now it still has that nasty big chin sans the Apple logo. WTF

What a disappointment and lost opportunity to create a beautiful iMac.

This is so ugly.
The chin is where the motherboard, speakers etc reside, as per the presentation where we saw the insides. Clearly they needed the space for this purpose.

Make a thicker body or a tapered body like the previous iMacs but with much smaller bezels and no chin. That would’ve worked perfectly I’m sure.

It’s a lazy solution to do the chin just so the iMac looks thin and flat from the side.

Well, you should become a designer, or create your own company, I guess, if you want your wishes fulfilled.

Looks like the chin is required for the system board cooling and likely helps makes the speakers sound better.
Also, when you plug something into the back of an iMac, you need to grab hold of the chin, otherwise when you push your usb/thunderbolt/whatever into the slot on the bottom-back of the iMac screen, it tilts forward. It would be like pushing a usb drive into your laptop screen--the laptop screen doesn't have enough resistance and will rotate. I think it would be a little weird to be squishing the bottom of an all glass iMac screen (and getting it fingerprinty) whenever you needed to do this.

I think a smaller bezel, while keeping the apple logo, would have been a better design. That, or tighten up the iMac screen hinge significantly so that the screen doesn't rotate when you plug stuff in the back.

Yeah maybe. I’m just disappointed this went through at Apple. And most likely this design got signed off when Jony Ive was still at Apple. Or at least he was consulting via his company LoveFrom.

As you can see it’s the majority of people who don’t like the chin and white bezels.

You arent the "majority of people" because the majority of people are average consumers that arent on MR complaining about the design in the first place.

It went through Apple because they know that the average person will like it and still buy it. It will last for years to come in regards to your everyday home-usage.
Funny how saying I totally agree with the video gets my post deleted.
Just like the post if you agree with it.
This design is so fugly.
Average consumers don't seem to care, so that's good. :)

You should be grateful that Safari is snappier.

this is an idiotic argument. I guess everyone who has ever not liked a film should just become a director, or anyone disappointed that their team has lost should just become a quarterback.

You’re not wrong about this, but now the chin is covered in glass too so your note about fingerprints on the front face is now a reality.

Moving to an external power supply is a GOOD idea (less internal heat, one less point of failure -inside-).

Ethernet in the power cable -- so-so.

Other than that, it's a letdown.
- Not enough ports (even on the "4-port" version)
- Not enough memory options
- Only the m1 CPU

I would have preferred they CONTINUE "the old design" pretty much as it was, other than moving to external power.

Just upgrade the internals. How long has it been since you looked at the back of YOUR iMac, anyway...?

Consider the machine they are replacing. The 21.5-inch iMac never had the power of its bigger cousin, the 27-inch. This design is WAY better for the low-end iMac (IMHO), which still had a spinning HD as an option. And the M1 CPU is more powerful than any of the options in the 21.5-inch Intel iMac.

If you want an iMac with more power, you will probably have to wait for the Apple silicon replacement of the 27-inch.

Maybe I'm still just the teenage girl I used to be, but this is the first Mac I've been seriously interested in for quite a few years now - precisely because of the colors. Very much reminds me of the iMac G3's I grew up with. I'm actually glad it still has the chin, I think an all-screen design like the mockups we've seen is sinfully ugly, a small chin suits the iMac. Bit disappointed in the loss of the Apple logo on the front and only 8 GB standard memory, but as long as they offer a 16 GB option I'll get over the lack of logo, and I do believe this will be my first brand new Mac since 2006.

What majority? The little microcosm at MR in this thread? I would not try to make any conclusions about statistics based on that. Clearly people at Apple think it's good and their designs and decisions seem to be paying dividends for quite a long time now.

It's on the same level as proclaiming what Apple should do and where they should put things in their designs I would say.

I’m curious how many who are complaining about this machine are the target audience or were planning to buy it? I could maybe understand if the larger iMac also came out with this design but it seems likely the larger iMac will look different. Isn’t that what most techies are waiting for - assuming they’re waiting for an iMac at all?

sorry but we can have an opinion, don't we? I wouldn't have bought the first iMac Bondi blue but I still love how that machine looks even today
