The design reminds me of the 7th gen iPod nanos lol - smooshed together with the old white iMac.

the thing for me about the new design is it didn’t need to be that thin, it could have been twice as think and still have been thin and they could have gotten rid of the chin... or they could have made it the same thickness as the XDR display, with the same stand ... maybe that will come with the 27/3032” version... fingers crossed I’m sure these new iMacs will be great but they were never going to be a serious machine no matter the performance, the price point tells you that alone... these are entry level machines.

Seems to me the 699$ Mac mini with an external 24” display is a much better deal than the new 1299$ iMac?

Depends on what kind of display you buy (24" 4k isn't very common and those that exist cost a lot), wether you care about the kbd&mouse or having a clutter free desk.

I'm not sure. This is my set-up (albeit with a 27" 4K monitor rather than 24).

The screen is just not as good as an iMac, plain and simple. The speakers are crappy, it doesn't have a webcam. I already had an older Magic Keyboard and Trackpad, but if you didn't already have these, you'd be buying them (or another equivalent). This all mounts up in cost until the difference all but disappears.

Whether people realize this or not, all the bright colors of the iMacs and new Apple Watch bands, are exactly what the world needs to jump start a new era. We are living in a monochrome dystopian covid society and a splash of color will no doubt bring on a refresh of peripherals and devices from tech companies. For some, at face value, it seem like something we don’t want but it’s what the world needs right now. Frankly, I didn’t realize how much I missed “fun Apple”, until I saw those iMacs spinning and it took my back to the imac G3 days, nostalgia and all those emotions came flooding back. It might be simplistic but it is exciting.

I agree. i think you need to compare the 699 to the 1499 imac when you factor ports that the 1299 lacks Along with the gpu. Add 16gb of ram for each and youre looking at over 1700 on the mid tier imac

I see your point but per my previous post above, 1k a big difference. I dont need a webcam, i have the space grey numeric keyboard already and i already have a bluetooth soundbox that i can connect. In the end youre paying the amt for the imac to pretty much get the screen

There’s been this theme over the last 10 years cold internet streaming, where most content is either streamed or stored online.
Many software applications have also introduced web based UI‘s, negating the need for vast storage configurations.

The comment on the lack of RAM suggests this products demographics are foreign to you. This is clearly replacing a consumer line, most likely used in the home. As has been shown in the MBP Pro/Air and Mini; RAM requirements are different with AS than Intel, less is more.
I suggest most here just calm down, done take their ADD Meds, and wait until it’s used in the real world. Be hard to imagine a $1 Trillion company has got it wrong.
What are "ADD Meds" by the way?

Seriously, who is buying these yellow and orange computers??
I am getting one to replace my 2019 21.5" iMac.
Will be first in line to pre-order the 24" iMac.

Reason: M1

M1 runs circles around any Intel iMac plus I hate the spinning HDD in my iMac.
Beach balls all day...

The M1 and Unified RAM runs circles over the 16GB, 32GB Intel machines by a long shot!

And I sold all my Intel Mac Mini, Macbook Pro and Airs and got only M1.

I see custom skins and decals making a huge splash with these new iMacs... people will do anything to make them look less hideous.
These things will be flying off the shelves. Not everybody is a stick in the mud. It’s been too long since Apple offered colorful iMacs. I welcome these!

Great that Apple offers these choices!

Everybody said it would be a giant iPad with small bezels. Now it still has that nasty big chin sans the Apple logo. WTF

What a disappointment and lost opportunity to create a beautiful iMac.

This is so ugly.
Glass does not breathe. It’s a matter of utility and form following function. Plus beauty is in the eye of the beholder. i literally never see the chin as I am looking at content on the screen not the bezels or other physical parts of the computer. It’s pretty amazing to be so thin by the way.

What an ugly piece of crap.

The silver version is the least offensive but it's still ruined by the white bezels and lack of Apple logo.

I remember hating the 7th gen iPod nano design and 10 years later they used it for the iMac. 🤢

I don't even understand how this got approved. You don't even need a Steve Jobs or Jony Ive to tell you how poor this design is.

Exactly this. Plus the white bezel of the iMac G3. The only issue this time is that they forgot to include the black on black option. Every time Apple has released whacky colors in recent memory, they always have that standard option to appease the crowd that doesn’t want the color or white bezels. That’s the missing piece here. If they had included one model OR just given the silver model a black bezel, I think there would be a lot less moaning from this crowd.

I personally dislike the design, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that this product is not designed for me and I’m praying that whatever Pro level iMac they release has a different set of design choices and considerations that may be more appealing to me. Wait and see, but I’m not confident. I, like many others, think they should’ve made this an inch thick and lost the chin. They also should’ve rounded the corners of the screens. And given it Center Stage.

The product design decisions for this are just so questionable in my mind. Thin and light, but it’s a desktop? Magnetic power connector ...on a desktop? Make it so thin we have to have our speaker cable sticking out of the side? Make it so thin we need a power brick? Just feels like a product that was designed by committee in the worst possible way. And, to me, it’s ugly.

I strongly hope this is not a sign of things to come across the product line, but I’m worried it’s a canary in the coal mine.

8Gb ram these days is a joke. My 6 yer old Lenovo Yoga3 has that. Fine in 2015. NOT in 2021!
"Its just a giant ipad with a keyboard." YES!!! We have a Winniah!
My current iPhone has 6 Gb of Ram. 16 Gb should be the norm for ANY Apple computer. Period!!
You're complaining about a product that you aren't even the target market for. The average consumer will do just fine with 8GB of RAM. Crazy, right? You clearly aren't a home user...
Thanks Apple!! My intel imac 2020 with 64gig ram still rulezzzz!!!
No wonder. Wait for the bigger iMac that'll actually be targeted at you.
it's a tenth of the speed of the AMD Threadripper 3980X.
The average person does not need an AMD Threadripper 3980X... 😂

You guys crack me up.
yeah, right....
Quite confident you are...

Apple only targets average, non demanding users now? That's ok, it's what McDonalds does with cuisine. :D

Hmm... I think you might be misinterpreting the post. The iMac is not targeted at pro users. You may not be aware of this, but Apple sells a very high-performance machine called the Mac Pro. It wouldn’t make sense for Apple to put that kind of power in this iMac because that would get very expensive, and most people don’t need that kind of power.

Apple knows, considering their cheapest iMacs (and presumably biggest sellers) only come in silver, blue, green, and pink.

That's not an accurate measurement.
I'm not sure why anyone would get this.
Only consumers are going to get it. You're a tech enthusiast.
So many people who just don't get what this or anything M1 (minus the iPadPro)is.

ENTRY LEVEL HW for people who don't care about HW.
Yes it is faster than midrange Intel Macs, but that just shows what a complete failure x86 (not just Intel AMD too) is when viewed outside gaming PC and HigEnd workstations.

Most people who bought an 21" iMac in the past 13 years never bother to update the RAM or storage even when it it was super easy. Most of them never did anything that required more than "base model form 3 years before" spec and these people are the target audience for the new 24" ones. They will put it onto their desk, connect to WLAN and just use it for the next 3-5 years till they will buy the next one.

Cramming the PCB, cooling and speakers behind the screen might have been possible but it would have made the iMac thicker by quite a lot and maybe even compromised sound and cooling. The result would look dated and weird, wether that is worse than a chin is a pointless discussion.

Sure, but don't expect it to perform at the same level, maybe for a short burst but I expect not even that.
Well said. Exactly my thoughts.
the mount is not height adjustable. why?
You're lucky it isn't $999.
The gap will widen even more as AMD continue to improve their lineup :D
Consumers are not interested in AMD. They're just interested in buying a computer that'll work for a couple of years.
What are "ADD Meds" by the way?
Attention deficit disorder medication

Same here. Bring on the colors!

How boring...

Consumers will buy it like crazy. They're normal people. They don't obsess or whine about "ugly" designs online. They just want a computer that works for the next couple of years.
This guy sums it up perfectly.

If only he were to realize that tech enthusiasts arent the target market...
It should unironically be great for kids and general home use.
Apple only targets average, non demanding users now? That's ok, it's what McDonalds does with cuisine. :D
The only people mad about this are tech enthusiasts. Apple targets the largest market, pros will come later. Chill.

The average consumer doesn't care. Pros are a small market and their demands will come with the bigger iMac.
