I’ll be on board with that if they would simply offer a black bezel…
It would be very popular

All these colors for the back, yet not a single option for a black bezel on any color

Black should not be a pro feature when it’s a usability thing on the edge of the screen
Amen. Did you see the image a fellow forum member made with the new iMac and a black bezel? It looks terrific. So much easier on your eyes than a distracting white bezel.

I did. Looked fantastic!

I’ve had white bezel devices, including old iMacs, and functionally speaking black is better in every way… Particularly now with True Tone constantly changing the white balance of things on the screen.

While I don't think it's "ugly" from the front they still look incredibly outdated. I get that the chin is where the cooling fans and speakers are, but I think all of us would rather have had a thicker back instead. It's not like we move these things or ever look behind it so I don't understand Apple's obsession with making the iMacs so thin.
The previous version of this iMac didn’t have the guts in the chin. I think Apple sees the chin as something iconic to the iMac (at least the consumer version). And with the M1 they were able to fit all the components into the chin.

For everyone who doesn't like the new iMacs, here is a computer you might like:

My only disappointment with Apple is that they didn’t release a 27” iMac, who needs 24” the bigger the better imo 👀👀👀 😂😂😂

We all wanted this. SIGH :(

Now, I would trade my MacBook for that. No reason they couldn't do this. The iPad Pro has a very similar display, awesome quad speakers, now has the M1 chip, and is thinner than the iMac. The mainboard in modern Macs is so small that the chin is completely un-necessary, especially with an external power supply. The MacBook Air mainboard is smaller than the keyboard, and is able to keep sufficiently cool without a fan. Plus, the stand seems too narrow and the iMac would tip over sideways easily.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the used space in the new iMac case is taken up by speakers. Glad to have color choices, but their new design just doesn't jive. On the plus side, it has a headphone jack.

Indeed black is better in every way! That’s why they are putting the inferior white bezels on the consumer products. The iMac Pro will definitely have the superior black / space grey bezels.

Having worked in the Apple Stores as a Technician, this would not work right now.

#1: a screen that takes up the entire device, in this case, would lead to a much larger casing in back. This would defeat the purpose of what Apple has done with the iMac for some time now: having a thinner over all computer

#2: Without the "chin", you lose access to space for the system board, the larger speakers that are befitting the iMac, and the cooling fans. The fans are the most important part in this case due to heat dissipation for both the logic board and the display. A display this large would generate a pretty significant amount of heat within the casing. Especially when you consider that the logic board would also have a better integrated graphics chip than the MacBook Pros currently.

MacOS is still a much more powerful OS than iPadOS is. The inevitable direction would be to create an iPad that could run MacOS or a unified OS, but it does still require more power overall. With the requirements for, again, heat dissipation, higher graphics processing, etc., this design would not, currently, work as an iMac.

Now...as an external display to replace the old Thunderbolt displays... 🤔

I don’t a “thinner overall computer”. It’s a desktop. It doesn’t go anywhere. It can be a thick as it needs to be.

Lol. This is so funny. This is replacing the 21 inch. Not the 27. They even said that. This is for students people who work at home etc. Not professional offices. You need the chin for cooling. How do you expect to cool the device. If there was no chin the back would be super thick. And I would rather have a chin and lots of people don’t really care. There is a redesigned 27 inch coming. Like it’s not that hard to figure out. The macrumors people are so funny. They live in their own bubble and act like they are the target market for these products.
Have you ever seen the inside of an iMac? The chin is not used for cooling. The fan sits behind the display, drawing air through the case, and then blowing it through the CPU heatsink and out the back vent.

With the new iMac, they could employ the design of the MacBook Pro's cooling system, keep the case thin, and lose the chin.

What would have been so wrong with integrating the internals into the base? Just stick a Mac mini into the base of the monitor and call it good.

Exactly this. Plus the white bezel of the iMac G3. The only issue this time is that they forgot to include the black on black option. Every time Apple has released whacky colors in recent memory, they always have that standard option to appease the crowd that doesn’t want the color or white bezels. That’s the missing piece here. If they had included one model OR just given the silver model a black bezel, I think there would be a lot less moaning from this crowd.

I personally dislike the design, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that this product is not designed for me and I’m praying that whatever Pro level iMac they release has a different set of design choices and considerations that may be more appealing to me. Wait and see, but I’m not confident. I, like many others, think they should’ve made this an inch thick and lost the chin. They also should’ve rounded the corners of the screens. And given it Center Stage.

The product design decisions for this are just so questionable in my mind. Thin and light, but it’s a desktop? Magnetic power connector ...on a desktop? Make it so thin we have to have our speaker cable sticking out of the side? Make it so thin we need a power brick? Just feels like a product that was designed by committee in the worst possible way. And, to me, it’s ugly.

I strongly hope this is not a sign of things to come across the product line, but I’m worried it’s a canary in the coal mine.
It’s definitely a strategy. It’s targeting people for whom the idea a colourful and light computer is desirable.

Clearly defined segmented markets like this are good for pushing people to other products... like the as currently unannounced Pro line of Macs.

At least all the entry level stuff is done now. Bring on WWDC :)

I had the same thought -- Do a smaller base, and make a product sort of echoing the much loved iMac G4 (Lampshade) and then we'd also get a height adjustable monitor.

It's ridiculous that in 2021 they designed an all new iMac with no way to adjust the height on the built in stand.

Maybe. Maybe not...
Particularly compared to just having a laptop they can move around and is much easier to deal with.

The iMac does not exist in the mid 2000’s anymore.

The amount of actual work and stuff getting done on phones and tablets and laptops is probably higher than it ever has been.

It takes a really compelling reason to have an expensive large monitor/computer on a desk somewhere that you can’t move around.

For working from home, I prefer a desktop machine and iMacs are great for FaceTime& Zoom because they have the integrated web cam and audio. My laptop in clamshell mode did not work so well for that.

So what do i replace my late 2015 27" 2TB fusion iMac with? I don't want anything bigger and not sure i want smaller.

You have two options, a 2020 Intel iMac or wait for the larger Apple Silicon Mac which I suspect will still be 27".

They are fun, people will like them. Kids, women, they will look good in well lit rooms with plush pillows.
As opposed to the dudebros in their dark basements? Why not just leave it at “people”?

Not trying to pick on you, I just don’t understand some of the qualifying thrown around about the design of these machines. Do people think grown men don’t like color?!?!? I swear most complainers I’ve heard would love it if Apple’s computers forevermore followed the palette of the 1984 commercial…and I don’t mean the Runner.

If someone doesn’t like these iMacs as an individual, fine…
different strokes.

…but people are throwing around things like “not professional”. Imagine judging someone’s professionalism not on their job performance and their ability to communicate but on the color of their computer. I’d hate to work anywhere where “professional” = personalityless monochrome automaton.
