Granted, many designs take time to warm up, but right now the pastel color/white bezel combo just clashes with the rest of the Mac lineup with their metal colors
Its clear Apple wants the "consumer" devices to have bright, youthful colours like the ipad air, iphone 12, macbook, and the higher end devices to have muted colors like the 14"/16" macbook pro, bigger imac, iphone pro and ipad pro

So expect the bigger imac pro to be different

I'm considering getting one with reservations. I wish it would come with 32GB, I understand why it hasn't. Three upgrades from Adobe CC, and this thing is already crying for more RAM. I almost wish they would've stayed with Intel, so we could at least get a desktop with some shelf life. Once again, Apple has made it hard to choose to buy now or wait for more RAM. Every announcement for the past year has been blessed with this question.
What do you mean about three updates from Adobe and it’s crying for RAM? That makes no sense. I am running Photoshop, Final Cut and Logic on an 8gb M1 MacBook Air and it is a nicer experience than my previous 2018 i9 15” MacBook Pro with 16gb RAM.

That may be, but the chin-less iMac shown looks way better than what Apple actually released. Besides, if Microsoft can release a large screen AIO that has thin bezels, no chin, is touchscreen, and is just as thin, why can't Apple with a more integrated and energy efficient mainboard, especially since they already did it with iPad Pro? Or are we supposed to forget that the Surface Pro and Studio 2 exist?

Granted, many designs take time to warm up, but right now the pastel color/white bezel combo just clashes with the rest of the Mac lineup with their metal colors. Looking at the front, the silver is the least objectionable combination to me. I understand they want to expand color choices, but how you apply the color matters. Example, the iPhone 12 blue is too intense and IMO makes the phone look like cheap plastic, but the 12 Pro blue is beautiful. Plus, just about any color works with a black screen bezel or a color-matched bezel.
Of course the render of an imaginary design lookbetter than real life! It doesn’t have to solve any problems beyond aesthetic ones  Same thing when I see imaginary renders of architecture. Yeah of course it looks great...it doesn’t have to resist gravity

fans. Speakers. Motherboard.

for all those who hate the chin, you can always buy a Mac mini and a monitor you know right??

from IfixIT today:

excerpt from an Article by:Sam Goldheart

A desktop with soldered RAM and storage, tiny fans, and an off-loaded power supply—at least that’s replaceable—is certainly a choice. For a company struggling to get back to its Mac roots, it’s definitely not the path we’d choose. If nothing else, this product line does seem to imply that the iMac Pro will be sticking around in some form or another.

2. Apple sells magic, because you’re not smart enough for tech.

Apple brags about how gentle their manufacturing is on the environment, but the true magic is in keeping the device you already have going. Recycled can never compete with repaired in carbon footprint reduction. But part of Apple’s greenwashing campaign is convincing its customers that they are too stupid to fix their own tech. Apple has fought unceasingly to convince its customers that hardware isn’t just hardware—it’s magic, so don’t touch. Don’t let them win this round of psychological warfare. Tech isn’t magic. It’s cool, and costly, and tricky, but should always, always be fixable. Let’s hope Apple’s next iPad is even half as fixable as the fantasy version Tim souped up in the promo video—socketed processors and no glue? Sign us up!

what are you talking about?
you do know the M1 from the ipad will be undervolted right? it will not drive up to 30W or so like the 13" mbp or the future 24" imac will do
I suspect the imac to have even higher clock speeds for the cpu and gpu thanks to its active 2 fans cooling right on the mother board (less space for the air to travel vs the intel imacs)
And, tell me, Apple if it went with your design ...after 2-3 years when the M3 will need proper cooling, apple will redesign it again? No 100%, they learned their lesson after trashcan fiasco
Again ipad pro with M1 is 50% faster then the A12Z...so is not close to the M1 from the active cooling mbp13"
The imac needs the chin for the speakers, motherboard and for the fans...i dont want again an imac with the ventilation that travels from below throught the motherboard and behind the display and making spots and bringing micro dust particle into the display
This way, they place almost everything into the chin, and the display is away from the heat of the motherboard completely , and i hope sealed at micron level
I attached a picture of a 2017 iMac that shows what the inside looks like. All the main components are behind the LCD, just like they are in the iPad and most other AIO computers out there.

With the way displays are made now, it's impossible for dust to get into the viewable area, as the LCD is bonded to the front glass. This change was made in 2015 with the release of the 12" MacBook and iPad Air 2. Besides, the airflow you describe is exactly how the iMac cools itself currently. Air is drawn in through the bottom edge, and then blown through the heatsink and out the back vent by a fan. The back case of the current iMac bulges in the center at the hinge. That's where the fan is. The bottom edge of the speaker cases, I/O ports, and the main power port are all that's in the chin. The disk drive, power supply, speaker drivers, and mainboard/fan are all directly BEHIND the LCD.

So what if the iPad is undervolted? It has no heatsink, let alone a fan, but manages to stay cool under load. The only difference between the M1 MacBook Air and M1 Pro is a fan, and the iMac would have room for two. Should they need more cooling for future chips, they can tweak the case as they've done before. For the last few years, the iMac's case has been modified to accommodate different ports. The iPad and iPhone change form factor and dimensions all the time.

iPad aside, the i5-equipped (and the M1) MacBook Air is only slightly thicker than the new iMac, and that not only contains a display, mainboard, and fan, but the Air also has a keyboard and extra two layers of aluminum sandwiched in. They could easily take the M1 board, fan, and heatsink out of the MacBook Pro and put them in the iMac and have it fit without a chin in the same thickness enclosure.

Since the iMac is now just a bigger, more powerful version of the iPad Pro that is 2 times thicker, there's no reason it couldn't have that "imaginary" display. The iPad Pro fits a mainboard, 6 speakers, Thunderbolt Port, and a pair of batteries behind the display, and a thicker, larger case would allow tons of room to put a fan or two with a proper heatsink and heatpipe, two more speakers, and more ports. Now, with the power supply being external, that opens up even more room. Not to mention, there already is empty space in the iPad Pro.

The current iMac is already top-heavy, so I really hope that most of the weight in the new one is in the base. That smaller foot is going to make tipping over extremely easy, and for the apparent target market, that is a real concern.

I don't have to buy a Mac Mini, I already have an Air with a high-quality 27" 4K monitor.

again, even the 2020 imac with intel has that problem..the sealing is not on micron level because, you know that nowadays with all of those pixels, the display has to breath also, has some "cooling". laptops are different since they can have displays that doesnt has to "worry " about air and dust since the fans are into the base
Even microsoft studio, has it fans in the base, and the display is away and "lonely "

This way, Apple can even double the pixel to 8k down the road, since the display is away from the motherboard and fans
I dont see apple redesign this in the next 10 years, so they thought about everything

The last iMac that introduced a truly beautiful-looking new form factor was the first generation PPC G4, the “Luxo lamp”. It even had white bezels, albeit surrounded by transparent border. There’s a reason it’s in MoMA, it oozed class. Even had the humourous element of the optical drive looking like a tongue poking out.

Everything since has been utilitarian and ugly AF and this new model lowers the bar still. The colours are a lazy or clumsy (possibly both) throwback to the fun and ground-breaking anti-beige G3 iMacs. But in today’s market, it just look like crap. As for The Chin well it remains utterly hideous, more even so now the Apple logo has been removed. Finally, time to dig out those stickers, right? I’m joking. Or am I?

With the Pro XDR display, the design language to follow was very clear. Talk about clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. This just screams “marketing manager with a pencil“. Specs are typically anaemic too.

F for Fail, Timmy.

If nothing else, this reminds me why I like laptops. Way less drama. I am glad I refreshed my entire fleet in 2020. Just wish my gold MBA had a little less pink in it.

Onto the more exciting aspects of the event. Tell me more about that new Apple TV remote while I wait for my AirTags.

My biggest complaint Apple could have made the screen a little thicker to remove the notch/chin on the bottom ... thinner is not always better

Also, did apple run out of space gray paint on all of those iPhones?

Few people seem to talk about the advantage of a power brick outside the iMac. It will be easy to replace if needed instead of having to send the iMac away for service. Also less heat inside the computer and longer life for other components.
I think the appeal of the iMac is that it is an all-in-one machine. It feels a lot less sleek when you now have to deal with an external power brick that did not exist in the past.

Um... not sure how this is a problem for anybody. The power brick will almost assuredly be out of sight, probably on the floor. If you look at the pictures of the new iMac in use, there is clearly a decent length of cable from the brick to the computer. The specs point out it is a 2-meter cable, so this really won’t be an issue.

So what do i replace my late 2015 27" 2TB fusion iMac with? I don't want anything bigger and not sure i want smaller.
In the same boat. I have always been an `tweener: I am constantly in-between the base model(s) and a higher tier. Often I need one feature of the higher. [Overly Simple Example: When iPhones came with 16, 64 or 128 GB of storage, I was the one who needed 20ish GB of storage. Just enough to step-up the internal debate about pruning what is on my phone or buying more space than I needed.]

I have a 2015 27" 2TB fusion iMac, i5. 8GB of Ram but upgraded after purchase for my occasional virtual machine work.

This update sent me into a panic about what will replace our machines. And, after 25 years as a Mac user, I am also starting to have mixed feelings about MacOS. I am already seeing myself as that awkward iOS and Linux user: iOS for phone and tablet, Linux for desktop.

I love my apple stickers but I hope someone makes something more sturdy to affix to the front of this naked iMac. Maybe a shined up piece of aluminum or mylar.
If I bought one of these iMacs, it would absolutely need that beautiful hood ornament that was unceremoniously removed. .

IMHO, putting the Apple logo on the back makes a lot more sense. You don’t need to market to the person using the computer; they already bought it.

Logically it makes sense, but aesthetically, I think I’d prefer the logo. Maybe if they wanted more throwback points they could just have “iMac” on the front like the g3 and g4

My thought is that if Johnny Ives was still around the aesthetics of this iMac would be much better
Don’t get me wrong the M-1 chip is a great advance but the chin is unacceptable
Yet all these designs happened while he was leading design at Apple. Big white bezels and a chin.
