great my paypal claim says it will be reviewed when tracking # says i got the item.but my tracking # will say in transit forever cause he never sent it.so now i guess i got to call my ccard.anyone get there money back from paypal?

I don't blame the people who got conned into buying this, because the price ($900) looks reasonable (I resell computer gear.. and I frequently obtain the MBP priced at $1999..for $1650..I know my supplier gets it for cheaper.. so it *is* possible to get a MB for $900.. but that would be close to cost)

I have experienced tons of sellers with 4-5 feedbacks.. relatively new, selling stuff for close to cost - with stock photos - and I have received all my items. The best way to prevent being scammed is to use a credit card in conjunction with paypal - so your ccard can back you up in the event that paypal does not.

It boils down to luck - I mean some power seller with 15,000 feedback can suddenly decide to pull a scam.. imagine how many people would get fooled! Hey, if Madoff could get away with 50 billion..

call up paypal and explain your situation. i called up paypal and they understand how these scams work.

I'll chime in. I bought a new guitar off eBay on 1/2/09. The seller waited a few days to ship it even though he assured me it would go out within 24 hours. From the time I purchased it to recieving it was about 13 days. I picked it up from UPS because I missed the delivery, ate dinner, came home, opened the box and it had a damaged fret. I looked it up and this is not a simple fix. I notified the seller immediately. No answer for about a week. I also started a dispute on PayPal just in case. Finally heard from the seller, he appologized, offered to replace the item which by then I had bought locally (for more money) and submitted a claim on eBay to mutually void the transaction so he could get his fees refunded. I had already shipped the guitar back. Two days after the guitar was delivered to the seller he contacted me again and said he'd give me a refund once the merchandise was received. I replied that it was delivered already. That was a Friday. After them having the guitar back for almost a week still no refund and no answer to emails.

Finally... They'd not ever responded to the dispute process which I escalated to a claim so PayPal gave me a refund which was immediately credited to my account.

The seller had 100% positive feedback and still sells things. Not sure if they just dropped the ball on this or not. About 1% of new stuff is DOA so anybody that sells enough stuff is going to run into the problem. The crappy part was they ship the guitar in a free guitar case so if they'd checked it out for a couple minutes after taking it out of the box they could have prevented the mess. In the end I paid more for a guitar than I did for a guitar and what turned out to be a nice case which I could have used and I was stuck paying the return shipping plus it took three weeks before I had a playable guitar and almost a month before I got my money back. Still buy stuff on eBay all the time and plan to continue doing so.

Not sure that helps but since this just happened I figured I'd pass the info along. Sorry for the rambling.

Classic Ebay scam

I think it's a lot easier now to get your money back from Ebay(Paypal) as they have taken some nice steps to protect people.

But it's taken them years and ten's of thousands have ben ripped off in the meantime.

You probably want to add to your first post in this thread with something like
"Edit: turned out it's a fraud. If it sounds too good to be true...."

nah, my friend works at best buy and he calls me one day and says "hey theres a lady here selling a macbook for 800 bucks and i know you're looking for one"

little did he know the specs. long story short, she was getting a divorce, skipping town, didn't want to drive an hour to return it at the apple store so she thought she'd give someone a good deal. lucky day for me lol

Probably not her laptop. Probably her ex-husband's.

The important thing is you got your money back and you learned your lesson. I suggest you to save up and get one from Apple.

eBay + PayPal can be bad news. PayPal often refuses refunds for bad reasons, and eBay projection is false if you received anything at all.

In my experience, the best deals you can get are on places like Craigslist where you have to physically meet the person, inspect the item, and then make the purchase. I got my G5 on UsedOttawa.com for 700 bucks, which at the time was a great deal.

+1 for craigslist!

I got my iPod Touch 32GB (2G) two weeks ago for $250. :D It's just too bad me and the person i bought it from dont listen to the same type of music, cause he left all the music, music videos, and movies on there. That would have been a great!

Also picked up my :apple:Tv off of craigslist. got the 160GB model for $200 i think it was...

dont worry paypal will refund you ?

Keep in mind that A fool and his money are soon parted.
If you keep that attitude, you will scammed again sooner or later.

This is the reason ebay + paypal fee cost close to 10% of auction closing price!

They have to charge a higher fee to pay off the scammers.

People falling for scams -> scammer profit -> more scammers, more fraud -> higher fee -> higher product cost for legit products.

Right. This way, at least when they rip you off, you get the satisfaction of being able to put a face to the person who just robbed you

it's a curious thing.

If Paypal and Ebay (same co.) are giving refunds so easily I wonder what steps they are taking against scammers. There's a clear electronic path. If the resources were there they could lock up quite a few bad guys I would think.

But then again it may just be more cost effective to just pass on the loss to either taxpayers as write-offs, or transaction fees.
