I think Wozniak's opinion would be worth dog **** if Steve was alive.

If fact, bet your ass Wozniak would sit in the corner quietly If Steve were here.

Exactly. There should be options. One size does not fit all.

Not saying its a reason to not offer different sizes. But it would be even harder to get your hands on one right now if their production was split to different screen sizes.

Not only that but I dont know if they could come up with an elegant solution for apps running on to different screen sizes. I think its bad enough right now with millions of millions of non-retina (ipad 1/2 , iphone 3gs, ipod touch etc) and different resolutions of retina displays (iphone 4/4s, ipad 3, iphone 5).

Developers usually have to keep all those screens in mind when designing an app. It would be an android like nightmare if they had more in my opinion. I just think apple runs too tight a ship to let their app catalog look like dog **** because developers are confused. I could be wrong though with these letterboxed iphone 5 apps. I guess they just have to ask, is the risk worth the reward? Prolly not, because millions will buy it regardless...

I 100% agree with Woz. Knew there was a reason why I liked him so much. Sadly Apple is headed in the wrong direction. They should have made a wider iPhone 5. What is wrong with 4.3"??? Anyway, he is free to speak his mind. I do wish he could go back to Apple and bring in some new ideas.

Amen.
Yes the screen on iPhone 5 is too narrow.

Did you even read the stories out there? He said he wanted a larger size in addition.

And Apple may yet make a fatter phone. After all they are coming out with the iPad mini, which to my mind, why? the current iPad size is perfect, but I guess they are trying to compete with the like of Kindle etc. Once they feel they want the business of a fatter phone, they will do it.

The form factor of the new iphone appeals to me, but i am a girl with small hands.. So in that instance apples justification for the ergonomics makes sense - for me..
Android phones offer a lot of choice but it seems increasingly that if you want a powerful phone you need to buy the big screen model. The samsung sg3 "mini" is an example.
I watch a friend wielding her note with both hands and she looks ridiculous taking a call. She loves it, I think its unwieldy but the choices are there for different people.

On the flip side, the sheer number of devices out there means fragmentation is a real issue. After bricking my phone through kies when the ICS update came through, it then transposed samsung had updated kies for something completely different which broke a pile of sgs2's, so off mine went to birmingham to be fixed. No phone for 10 days... That's been the catalyst for my wish to switch.

However i do believe the apple store employees are quite arrogant. I phoned up to check the availability of a bluetooth headset and he couldn't even be bothered to pronounce the manufacturer properly. A friend had a similar experience with the same store on several occaisions, so it's not just me. I just hope because of how big they now are they don't become the "microsoft of the 90's".

I noticed that.
So what is he again with Apple?
Is he even affiliated or part of the company any more?

He's still an Apple employee, and apparently receives a paycheck every year. But he doesn't actually work there or have any responsibilities.

If my company had $100+ billion in cash I'd be arrogant as well. Every single company on this good earth wishes they can be apple. When you are on top you are always the #1 target for everything (bad).

Mr woz is entitled to his opinion. Why don't he convince the millions of people who don't own an iPhone to go android instead. People who own an iPhone already know the magic with these things. It's almost as if you bought a Ferrari knowing it eats up gas but yet you complain it's a gas guzzler.

The analogy is not needed but its always complaining about something you bought.

This guy speaks the truth... I bet if he had his eye on things then we wouldnt be seeing all these scratched and damaged phones coming straight out of the box.

I don't understand how that is arrogant? Misinformed or unfamiliar with the manufacturer is more likely. Had they argued with you about the correct pronunciation, that'd be a different story. But even then, that would be indicative of the person on the phone. Not the company. I doubt Apple trained him/her to pronounce the manufacturers name incorrectly.

Your post sounds more arrogant than the blue shirt on the phone. You're offended because somebody didn't pronounce a word correctly? That's pretty pompous in my book.

This is the reason why Woz was not a CEO but a nerd in a back room. His business mind fails.

it doesn't fail. he doesn't give a damn about the business, he lives for the fun of tinkering with all sorts of gadgets. So many CEO's make the worst decisions in history. Woz is a joy to listen to sometimes because he isn't full of snake oil.

lol. fanboys attacking the inventor of Apple computers because he has some arguably valid criticism of the company.

You can't make this stuff up.

Woz is def not a businessman, but he isn't just some nerd in the backroom.

Listened to woz on the Cult of Mac Podcast. He still has very high praise for Apple.

No he hasn't. See my above post. He still has very high praise for Apple.

In woz's apple he would license everything to everyone and companies would take advantage of that. He would also make things confusing as **** simply because he loved computers that much and wasn't for "the average user".
Good thing that never came to fruition. Apple today is one of the most valuable companies because of Steve's vision, not woz's.

All I know is that I would prefer the iPhone to have a larger screen than the iP5. At a design level, I think the case is compelling: First, the iPhone is no longer just a phone. It has become a general purpose information device, and a modest increase in pixels means not having to mess about pinching, zooming, and panning. Second, humans are sexually dimorphic, which is to say females tend to have smaller bodies than males. I'd be willing to bet that there is a massive difference between the sexes in how far they can reach with their thumb. Add to that variation within the sexes, and offering a choice of sizes is good industrial design. Third, the population is aging. Like me, retina displays don't mean ***** if the text is too small. Fourth, is changing screen size is such an issue, then why not invest in making programming tools and API's that ease the burden on developers making apps for different screen sizes?

Is Apple being arrogant? Perhaps. Are they being dogmatic to the point of irrationality? I think so.

His thoughts on Android are well known, but interesting thoughts from the Woz on Apple and the iPhone 5 that I haven't heard before. From the iPhone 4's "You're holding it wrong" to not offering multiple iPhone sizes does kind of smack of arrogance. It might not be a stretch to think that at least some of the current issues with the phone might stem from this mentality.

His brain evaporated ...

Oh yeah. I'm not saying I agree with all this licenseing crap etc but he's still a good guy and def not anti Apple.

He has a lot of respect fro what they still do. :)

When android comes out with a Nexus device, do they make 2 different versions with 2 different sizes? No they don't, because it may not make good business sense. Android and iPhone have two different business models. Apple makes one phone a year, which seems to usually be the most popular single device for that year. Android manufacturers throw like 6-8 devices to the market per year, with at least 4 different manufacturers. That's not even a fair comparison to Apple. Is Apple losing customers' favor as a whole, because they didn't change their business model and make 2 different size versions? If more people wanted a larger size, would not Apple's iPhone popularity decrease? Honestly, Woz's argument sounds stupid to me. He'd have an argument that makes sense......if it wasn't for sales numbers and public popular opinion indicating that, as a whole, people seem very happy with the iPhone 5. If there was a obvious decline in sales, and market info indicated that this was due to people wanting a giant sized screen, then what Woz said about Apple would be valid.

Real fanboys should thank goodness every day, that Woz was open-minded enough to put up with a mean, stinky, uneducated, self-centered, back-stabbing friend such as Jobs was.

Otherwise there'd be no Apple. It took both kinds of people to create it. Ying and yang.

What's sad is how many would rather be like Jobs.
