:DYou should all come to realize that once the iPad was announced, the Touch was relegated to being 3rd class citizen. Its a device aimed at 5-13 year old who don't have phones. Or teens in that range. Any adult(18+), most likely would get an iPad or iPhone.

Be happy they gave you a white version and move along. I mean, for a few hundred(depending on size) you could get an iPad and be far better off.

My advice, sell your Touch and get the big boy toy the iPad.

Have fun with your stuff!:D

Agreed.

Well, I didn't really mean it would be a "BAD" thing. I just like the idea of there being more of a reason to get an iPhone than just the "if you want a phone, get an iPhone" and "if you don't want the phone get an iPod touch".

Now, there is a very noticeable difference (marketing-wise) between the iPod Touch and iPhone. Basically, if you want more advanced hardware (and a phone) go with the iPhone. If you want something less-advanced without a phone, get the iPod Touch.

I know it really doesn't make sense. I do think it would have been great to see a big update to the iPod Touch, but I'm just saying that since it didn't happen, now there's more of a difference between the two products. They can be distinguished more now rather than one just not having a phone and the other one having a phone.
As a consumer, I see no benefit to differentiating the iPhone from the iPod Touch. If a consumer wants to functionality of the iPhone (minus the smartphone contract) it would be preferrable to have that available. Choice is a GOOD thing.

But I can see it from a fan perspective... secure the cachet of the iPhone to make it more prestigious to own. Because after all, some iPhone fans need to find some way to justify the purchase... and having an iPod Touch on par with it, undermines that justification.

It's possible we did not see the A5 because of Apple's current difficulties with Samsung. Apple is distancing itself and it's rumored the A6 will be coming from another manufacturer out of Taiwan. Hence we have a minimal upgrade maybe based on legacy contracts with Samsung and we could see a whopping upgrade to the quad core A6 on the next upgrade cycle.

That sounds about right.
They probably didn't update the Touch because they still sell the iPhone 4 which means the iPod Touch is not really outdated.

Its simple, iPhone and iPad are Apples baby right now, they are both making monstrous profits for them. Only makes sense that they are first on the list to get the A5 chip.

That being said I wish we would have had SOMETHING done to the iPod Touch like that elusive 128GB iPod Touch that some Classic users are waiting for. It was the one thing that was better than the iPhone in that it had a higher capacity now it doesn't have that.

Since the iPods have reached their peak they probably aren't looking to upgrade it like they usually do. I bet the iPods are on a two year cycle update (if that) now.

Ridiculous. Two different products.

One's a portable media/gaming device and one's a computer side kick. This is like suggesting a Ford F150 to someone looking for a sports car.

Interesting you say its aimed at children because more than half of the demographic for the iPod Touch in 2009 was 18 or older and considering how the iPad is the same platform as the iPod Touch runs how is the iPad a big boy's toy and the iPod Touch is not?

Its funny you say that.

The iPad is actually a larger version of iPhones/iPods.
They are more like adult toy device rather than iPhones and iPods that were built for a designated purpose (Phone calls/MP3 player respectively)

The 499$ pricepoint confirms it as many laptops can do what the iPad do yet they can be found for less than $400. Total rip off which is why many people over the age of 18 can buy a touch and reap the iOS benefits.

Personally I have never seen anyone under the age of 13 have an iPod touch, don't see how the touch is for the ages of people between 5-13.

The iPod Touch and the iPad are not the same

nor should they be compared the way they are being compared on this thread.

I have an iPad, and it will not substitute for an iPod Touch.

Trying to use the map feature or any computing feature on the iPod Touch is a bit of a challenge compared to the iPad. I know because I own one and have tested the other.

and, unless you are the jolly green giant, you are not going to be able to hold the iPad in your pocket and go for a jog listening to your favorite tunes.

I am 57, I use a pay as you go Net10 phone precisely because I am NOT a tween who spends all their time talking and texting friends. I don't need the phone portion of an iPhone, but I certainly think its reasonable for me to expect the latest technology that the iPhone offers for all the non-phone stuff it can do. All the stuff I can also do on an iPod Touch, but apparently I won't have the latest technology on the iPod Touch.

I see the reasoning, I just don't like the fact that I am told to get an iPad because I don't want to fork over the huge cash outlay for an unlocked iPhone. In fact, it amounts to me having to spend about the same for an unlocked iPhone as I would on an iPad.

When all I really want is an iPod Touch with the same rich latest-tech features that are being offered in the iPhone.

Wonder if Dan (from Sprint) had a chat with the good folks at Apple and told them that he will buy all those wonderful iPhones, as long as Apple made sure that the iPhone was the attractive option for the forseeable future. If the iPod Touch looked like an attractive option (i.e. had been given all the latest tech updates), some customers who are now considering the iPhone, might have stuck to their original idea of buying the latest-greatest iPod Touch.

My little brother has a 4th gen 64 GB iPod touch and he's eight. and almost everybody at his school has an iPod touch, it's amazing what these kids get. I still dont even have my own phone yet eight year olds get them? Very strange if you ask me. Anyway can't wait for the new since I am overdue for a new one I still have the second gen.

Bingo.

Apple sell more of a product that is far more integral to their quarterly performance reports.

As soon as Apple begins to sell a 3G iPod touch, phone sales will dwindle. I'd happily live without an iPhone if such a device was available. The thing that sold me on the Phone was that internet connectivity was available (almost) everywhere. If they provided a device that did that for half the price and with no contract, they'd sell a fraction of the phones they do now.

As a 64 year old I love the quiet time without my phone buzzing ,In fact the magic jack suits me fine.Could not agree with you more that Apple has let us down.Would love all the new iphone 4s updates in an ipod touch but I fear will we have to wait it out and see.Perhaps next year but waiting is the last thing a man of my age needs to do.

Correct. See my paragraph about the console vs. arcade machine.

When I'm on the iPhone now, I'll feel I'm using "big boy" stuff, much like when you're using the arcade version of a video game.

The current generation iPod touch is at a roughly equivalent rung on the iOS evolutionary ladder as the iPhone 4, which is still being sold as a "current" device.

Heck, for that matter, the iPhone 3GS is also remaining on the market as a "current" device. So, the fact remains that it, and not the iPod touch, is at the rock-bottom of the iOS ecosystem.

The current-generation iPod touch is firmly established, and continues to exist, in the "middle of the road" category of the iOS ecosystem.

I like that there's a difference between the iPod Touch and iPhone now. Before, it was "get the iPod Touch if you want an iPhone without the phone". Now, you *have* to get the iPhone to enjoy the more advanced stuff, like A5 chip, Siri, great camera, etc.
Why is that a good thing?

edit: Oops, I see you've already replied with a reason that makes sense to Apple stockholders and the like.

They're actually both gaming devices technically, since the iPad can run games better, with better graphics, and is also a portable device.

I'm no scientist on demographics, but you can't say the Touch isn't the "kid" device out of the 3, its small, light weight, and can be had cheap.

Really you've never seen a kid under 13 with an iPod touch? May I ask where you live, here in So Cal, where I frequent, all these little kids have'em. I've traveled to NYC and London recently as well, and the airports were saturated with kids with iPT's....its not exact science but it's a frequent occurence where I have been.

Also, of course a COMPUTER of the same price of the iPad we'll be featuring better specs, etc....but the iPad isn't a computer, isn't in the same category, it's a tablet, serves a totally different purpose than a netbook or laptop.

Also, iPads can be had from Apple refurb for not much more than a new touch, heck you can get a Gen 1 iPad on the cheap and the gen 1 is still a beast.

All i meant to say was i dont know why everyone expects the touch to get the same treatment as Apple's two flagship devices in the mobile arena.

Sorry for the mispells, typing while on the treadmill. Good day all enjoy iOS5 in a few.

An iPad doesn't fit in your pocket if you want to use it as a mobile mp3 player.

And an affordable iPhone only has 8 gb of storage, that's not enough.

If you need a phone, get a proper old skool phone like the one I have, which has a superior build quality and battery life than any $500+ smartphone which are fragile toys.

Odd. My iPhone not only didn't cost anywhere near $500, but it's also not fragile, and since I use it every day to run two international businesses, I'd hardly call it a toy.

Maybe you should spend less time trying to rationalize why you still have a phone from 2002 and actually look into the devices that you're so hell bent on bashing.

My phone is not only smaller, it still works perfectly and looks like new after so many years. Yet I see people with broken iPhone everywhere. ( not just iPhones, but also Samsung and blackberry's ).

It's not bashing, it's the simple truth. Everybody is getting iPhones from my work, but they could have given everybody just old skool phones instead of iPhones because it's primary use is calling. And battery life is a joke on smartphones.

( btw, I dropped my phone alot of times on the street and it's still like new. Do the same to the iPhone and either the back or the screen is broken )

So, your logic is that because you can't take care of something nice, no one should have it?

Uh-huh.

It's not an update, still the 4th gen iPod. 5th gen will presumably have the same dual core A9 as the iPhone 5.

I assumed they'd be updated today, since they're ALWAYS updated this time of year, but...maybe since the iPhone update was delayed 3-4 month, we'll get the iPod 5 in February? Maybe synchronized with the iPad releases now?

The A8 is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW now. So...very...slow. Wait for the new one, if you can. (Well, it's slow under iOS 4...maybe 5 is faster, although I doubt it. Downloading it right now...at work...which I shouldn't be doing, because it's huge, but oh well.)

Everywhere I see people wiht broken iPhones. People drop their iPhone once and the back or the screen is broken already.

Don't twist around what I say ;)

edit: And it's nice having to recharge your smartphone every single day huh?

I was going to buy a new touch if they put a better camera, faster processor and more ram but it is the same as last year version so I guess I will stick with my 3rd gen Touch which is actually running better with iOS 5. I guess right now I can live without a camera and the retina display. It does not really matter 99% of the time my Touch is in a dock hooked to my stereo and streaming internet radio on my Wifi network. As long as my radio apps still work with the 3rd gen then I am fine to wait longer.

Not just a gaming device, the world’s most popular portable game player.

You gotta love marketing. I mean at first glance you might think they mean it is the most popular among gamers, but what they could actually mean is that it is an extremely popular device that happens to play games. And what is the basis for this popularity anyway? The iPod touch hasn't sold anywhere near as many units as the Nintendo DS.

Anyway, yeah... It is a little weird to push it as a gaming device and not give it an A5.
