DAY TWO
Soda Springs, Idaho
August 6, 1843
It had been decided that they would rest up a bit in Soda Springs, partaking in extra provisions of jackrabbit and fresh apples, and leave late morning the following day instead of their usual dawn departure. Though they were more than halfway to Oregon, the last leg of the trip would be difficult, with rocky passes and mountain ranges ahead. They all agreed it behooved them to prepare accordingly.
Henry (Tomorrow) had risen early in the hopes of one last bath in the warm springs. He had slept the full night last night, something he had not done in many months. His mind had not kept him awake with thoughts of Juliet, or the horrible deaths of his Kirksville friends. With Charlotte avenged, Henry felt at peace and even a bit excited for what awaited him in Willamette Valley.
As he approached the water’s edge, he saw Doc Robinson (Don’t panic) floating on his back. Henry thought the man certainly had an affinity for odd morning practices, but the medicine man had been kind enough to him on the journey, and they had forged an easy friendship.
Keeping a respectful distance between them, Henry waded into the churning water with a smile. “Sorry to interrupt, Doc, but I think we had the same idea this morn.”
When he got no response, Henry moved closer to his friend’s relaxed form. When he finally saw Doc’s face, all of the peace he had felt drained from him - Jesse “Doc” Robinson was dead. He had been strangled, his face twisted in a gruesome mask of horror. Henry gently pulled Doc’s body to shore and laid him on the ground, closing his eyelids.
“I’m so sorry, friend.”
As he made the trek back to camp, Henry surmised he wouldn’t be the only one that was sorry. Doc’s death would be felt deeply by all.
Don’t panic has been killed.
