326 ppi comfortably over the limit of how much detail the human eye can recognize.

Why is this a good thing? Means there's no way you can see how clear it is.
Android phones today have high resolution displays, higher than iPhone 3GS without going beyond what you can see.

The real reason is that Apple's UI system doesn't easily support random sized displays. It was easiest to simply double the resolution in each direction.
Android uses algorithms to layout screens and can therefore accommodate any screen size (with varying degrees of success).
