Apple made a wide range of hardware and software announcements during its WWDC keynote on Monday, introducing its long-awaited AR/VR headset Vision Pro, new Macs, iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and much more. As always, there were many rumors leading up to the event that gave us an idea of what to expect, but not all of them were accurate.

Apple's "biggest WWDC announcements in a decade" it practically crickets on the web the day after. The only big thing was the Vision Pro officially being announced, everything else was as predicted and most were less than expected.

I wonder if the insufferable John Gruber will admit that Mark Gurman got it right about the “eye sight” aspect on the front of the device after he shot down the idea of it.

Mark: “Jony Ive lobbied for “an outward-facing display that would let you see the eyes of the user.”

John:“I’ll buy this front-facing display rumor if there’s a Cylon mode. Otherwise I’ll stick with my previous understanding that this is an internal joke that has been taken as real; that it would look goofy, not humane; and that even if it didn’t look goofy, it would make no sense to add the financial cost of an outward-facing display to an already-expensive device, and even less sense to incur the battery-life drain of powering that external display on an already-battery-life-constrained device.”

I applaud Apple for calling it Vision Pro rather than Reality Pro.

We seem to often forget that virtual reality is heavily visual and audio based but our experience of reality goes way beyond those two senses. We have sense of proprioception, balance, location in relation to space, direction, smell, taste, temperature, humidity and so on.

What are called virtual reality head sets are mostly visual and sometimes with some audio. That’s largely it.
Nah, the point is that this is not yet a firmly established product category of consumer electronics. Everybody understands what a VR headset is supposed to do, but it has never been a profitable market for anyone. For years Apple called the TV a "hobby" which didn't need to make a lot of money for the company, but Hobby Pro is a lousy name (and already taken). Vision Pro highlights not only the visual aspect of the device itself, but also that this isn't yet a profitable product, but literally a vision of what computing could become. It works both ways for talking about the present and the future of this technology. Which is why I'm not even mad that they had to change the name of xrOS to fit the product name.

Tim Cook even ended the presentation with reminding everyone: "And this is only the beginning."

I'm really surprised that Apple didn't push out fake leaks saying the headset would be $4000-$6000 in order to pull the iPad strategy again. I really expected it to shockingly come out at $2000 or less considering the $3000 rumor.

that only works if the number you put out as a "rumor" doesn't damage your stock... rumoring your major multi-billion dollar project is going to retail for $4000-6000 would damage the stock price because everyone rightfully would think Tim had gone insane. as it is $3500 is borderline damaging to the launch of the project but I think investors and the public at large will give Apple some leash on this as an initial beach head to the market and see if Apple can deliver more mass market options in the next 24 months.

We’ll see… maybe it was for preorder in late 2023 and available in early 2024. Also, not multiple colors, but multiple color bands for Vision Pro with different types of options.

Some naive posts about Mr Gurman and others. Apple controls its information flow, make no mistake about that and it is not pundits correctly predicting it is pundits who are allowed to disseminate information that Apple decides upon, whether true, fake or half way between. Apple are not alone in this. All major organisations, and indeed governments too control information flow.

Of course Apple needs wrongly named 'leaks', because it sets the scene of pre production PR, and of course its FREE.
You see some organisations then sending threatening letters about 'leaks' they have actually authorised in the first place, because they need them. Of course in some instances fake news will be out there, it has to be.

Its just like some producers who get rumours of shortages aired, and then of course there is increased demand...and a shortage...the ideal opportunity to hike prices.

Its not people in the know by guessing, its people given the nod. No doubt Macrumours and other sites know that as on occasion I'm sure there is pressure from whatever organisation a site is set up to comment on.

That’s a new low, and huge reach.Apple doesn’t care enough for this middle school drama of changing stuff. The leakers got it wrong is simple explanation.
I mean he is clearly correct. Apple has that name on all the videos used for the conference. It is not just an internal name, because those videos were not meant to be just for internal use. It is clear that for a long time apple intended to use that awkward name. Thankfully they saw the light, probably also because many people said out loud that it was an ugly name.

I'm just surprised how close it looks to that render that was used all the time.

I am laughing so much at all the people that for months complained there was no way the real thing would look like that and they were looking forward to the release so they wouldn’t have to see that ugly scuba mask looking device again. Guess what, the real thing is almost identical if not a little worse 🤣🤣🤣

And $1000 for a “big iPhone” wouldn’t have?

Hit – September 2022:

Vision would be my choice for the device. Like iPhone took the "phone" and added a prefix, Apple Vision would take the "vision" from television preceded by the Apple logo. It could fittingly be used as describing a human augmentation: "I have Apple Vision" to say that your vision is augmented with Apple's RealityOS overlaid.

(...)

I agree that anything Apple sells will probably sell regardless of the name but marketing and branding is important, specially for establishing an early trendsetting aura around a product, a strategy Apple is very familiar with.

I think we can assume that there'll be an Vision (standard) but they started with the pro version due to the incredible amount of cutting edge tech that had to go into this. As components become more commoditized, they'll be able to get the price down.

Gruber was correct: it does look goofy and non humane as every reviewer using it confirmed. It does make little sense to add cost to an already expensive device, and it does make even less sense to incur in extra battery life drain, especially considering they couldn’t fit the battery in the damn thing and despite being external it still only last about two hours. Apple decided to do it anyway, but his comments made and make a lot of sense.
