Remember the Gateway Profile 4? That was exactly what they are describing this imac to be...a screen with a pizza box attatched to the back. It was so ugly. It really scares me that apple would even consider going on that route. The moveable screen was so revolutionary...I don't know why Apple would ever get rid of that.

That is what I was thinking when people are describing it. We have 1 computer lab of Profile 4 and just bought 2 labs of the new Profile 5. I like the idea for PC but for MAC it has to be more eligant.

Well, actually NAV does have one good use: it helps screen out PC viruses in email so I don't pass them on to anyone else.

That truly matters only if the server you send to has virus detection.

\this brings to mind a responsibility of the email providers. It is to their own interests to protect against viruses. they could much more cost effectively introduce virus protection on their end. If they get an email that contains a virus, send you a notice that there is a questionable email. Provide a link. You go to it at your own risk.

Until the Mac platform has the same virus issues as the PC platform, I think it to our advantage not to have to rely on extra cost options to maintain our operability or the safety of non-Mac users.

For me, I want a iMac G5 option. I do hope that it includes a design along the lines of what is now available. For myself it provides some flexibility in terms of placement. For many others it allows true ease of use.

Just look at the Apple stores and the use of the IMac as a POS terminal. Ergonomics at its best.

There is something to be said about price points. That is why Apple has the eMac at a start of $799.

I am pretty sure that if Apple saw profit in the $400 system range they would do it in a NY minute. But some do forget the costs to a company offering such a low cost system. The primary is added support costs. That price level is attractive to those that want a computer, but may not know a keyboard from a cutting board. These same customers may not be willing to pay the added cost of AppleCare, if the $400 is that attractive to them.

As they say in the AllTell commercials, "You got that right."

The problem is when you appeal to the masses, you get masses of idiots for customers. That kind of constant harangue is NOT something that Apple needs or should let themselves in for. Think of this as being comparable to having a neighborhood or development where the entry price is fairly high (say $350K and up). It keeps, how shall I say, the trash out of the neighborhood.

Given Apple's design history I can only assume that the iMac G5 will not look as "bad" as the Profile 5 from Gateway. Not that it is totally. Is is a matter of form and function. Apple rules in this.

Apple doesn't seem to mind what it announces at what event, whether it's targeted at creative pros, developers, or consumers. If there's something big to announce (like a G5 iMac), then I think they'll do it at WWDC regardless. Anyway...why wouldn't a G5 iMac make a nice little development system?

I particularly disliked the way they used the WWDC to tout their own products, over 3rd party competitors. Isn't the point of a developer conference to help/inform 3rd party developers, not to compete with them?

Sort of the chicken and the egg. Who would exist without the other?

You might have watched it in Quicktime, but it most certainly wasn't live. Apple released the Quicktime of the Keynote speech after the event had already taken place.

I most certainly was, I remember watching it live. However, it was also mentioned early on that it would be streamed live via Apple's website, so I am a little worried that it will not be this year. I guess I will have to rely on MacRumors to keep me updated.

It is scheduled at 10am San Francisco time, that would be be 1pm here in the East Coast, so I may have to take a long lunch.

Well It's clear to me that if the new iMacs are shaped to be hangeable, then they are designed to either replace a television (think windows media centre) or at least have the potential to take up a role in the lounge room.

A previous post noted that you can tell in which direction Apple is going with its products (see Airport Express) and I couldn't agree more. Clearly, Apple is heading into all of your lounge rooms and taking over.

Apple Store says...

"We are busy updating the store for you and will be back within the hour."

Displays or iPods... oh please, oh please....

Does Apple normally have a down time? I thought it was an instant update?

I'm so excited... gotta pee before they bring the store up ... :D

I have to focus here. I am getting no work done. I just keep refreshing the Applestore page. If there is nothing new there, I am going to be pissed (and behind in my work;))

One more G4 iMac and THEN G5?

A lot of these complaints--about price, size, cooling, and shape, are based on the G5 assumption. I'm encouraged that MacRumors says thats likely!

But Apple did recently say that iMacs share a similar problem to PowerBooks in terms of fitting a G5 plus cooling. Now, it wasn't worded AS directly as the PowerBook comment, so there's always hope, but it did sound like the next iMac MAY WELL BE A G4. Which is fine... IF the resulting performance is still offered at the right price!

G5 iMac rumors might be true BUT still a ways off. I'm sure Apple would prefer to update the form factor and the CPU together, though, in which case the next iMac might even be the "old" shape too.

So be ready for the chance that the current iMac may get one more speed bump (and hopefully price drop), and that WWDC will be all about Tiger--and THEN the new G5 iMacs will follow in August or Sept. or whatever.

No Apple doesn't "want" to do that--but they deal with reality and we can't be sure the G5 iMac is possible yet.

But a hypothetical low-end (headless?) Mac might still come sooner than that as a NEW model--a G4 of course, if it's low-end.

(Also--when I imagine the display being optional and attaching to a slim CPU via an arm... I meant when the CPU is sideways as in horizontal... in other words, not much different from current Macs if used in that way.)

???

Does anyone know anything about satellite dishes? Please, I would like to know if I can do this. Do I need a service in order to get the feed or can I just get the dish and hook it up to my tv and put in the right coordinates?

Apple Store Down Still

Yeah I get the message too that they are updated their pages. Perhaps new ipods is the way I see it? :D

You'll need one of those older, larger dishes with the older receivers. Where you can choose which satelite you wan't to point to and fine tune the signal. The ones where the whole dish moves when you make a change. I remember my folks used to have one. In fact I think they still have receiver at home somewhere.

I have just pre ordered one of the first dual 2.5's to be coming into Australia, a nice new display would go nicely with that.

Also isnt this the second update in a row that has happened on a wednesday as opposed to the usual tuesday....if this is an update at all.

I am as excited about 10.4 as anyone, but I think it is time for a g5 iMac. They have not given it a significant update in *forever*.! It needs a g5...
