It's so little money for trolls and spammers, too.

Troll factories and spammers making any kind of money can easily afford $1 a year.

So I don't see how this fixes the bot problem.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It would not eliminate it, but it would help. If there was one account, one credit card, one bank account per Twitter account, that would weeded out an awful lot of the bots.

Just call it ’X’ and be done. If you did not know it was formerly called Twitter then it does not matter and if you did know, you don’t need to be reminded in every single article.

And again, figure out how democracy works - the popular choice wins. Populism.

And the Filipinos wanted that drug war because they didn’t want to turn into Mexico. That is why he was elected.
Before his candidacy the PH drug problem was barely in the news.

After his filing then his doom and gloom on the drug war came about.

An estimated 7,742 civilians have been killed in "anti-drug operations" carried out by the government and its supporters between 2016 and 2021
China has nothing to do with populism or democracy so bizarre you would bring that up.
China influenced the 2016 PH Presidential elections and got Duterte to back down the claims over the territorial waters of the West Philippine Sea. His predecessor won at UNCLOS.

I get you are running under the assumption of what sounds like democracy but Hitler was a populist too.

Yeah I guess it would help if every new Twitter account required these strict verification methods to be able to post. Though I still think the really big bad guys would figure it out.

But even though Elon has been complaining about bots for years... I don't think bots are the #1 problem.

The big reason Twitter is such an unpleasant place is because of unpleasant actual humans... not bots...

🤣

> X Tests 'Not A Bot' Program That Charges New Users $1/Year to Post
How cunning! Only a bot would agree to that, right?

I remember years ago when I had to pay like £1 or £2 to download What'sApp from the app store. Imagine Twitter trying that now.

EDIT: in trying to fact-check my poor memory, I found that What'sApp was a subscription service between 2013 and 2016?! I never knew! Apparently my account was grandfathered into being a free service because I downloaded it (and paid for it) earlier.

I gave up on that platform and deactivated my account a while ago. But yeah, good luck with that elmo 🤣

Didn't many people say X would be dead by now? Maybe perhaps, Elon knows what he's doing.

Can't wait for the "surely they're going to die from this new thing" comments. One more year should do it! 😂
Twitter doesn't die as long as Elon feels he has to prove the naysayers of his past and present wrong.

This isn't just the ones who hate the direction he has taken Twitter in since his takeover. It's also an opportunity to get revenge on all his former partners at X.com and Confinity who voted against naming their merger company "X.com" and opted for PayPal.com instead.

Regardless of why he won't let Twitter go, Elon has more than enough funds to keep it running at a loss for many years. Possibly decades.

Elon will make x.com happen or die trying. It's deeply personal to him.

Twitter has always been that way. You just shout into the ether and follow people whose tweets you come across and like.

They might follow you back and then they see your subsequent tweets. Eventually more and more people engage with your tweets and/or share them. Sometimes your tweet ends up in a news article or youtube video.

But first, loneliness.
Ha yes def lonely! It makes you feel like giving up but I shall persevere in sharing my important views with the world 🤣

It is hanging by a thread. Users are down, traffic is down and revenue is way down.

If Twitter hadn't become a dumpster fire... If neo-nazis and insurrectionists weren't re-platformed.. If moderators weren't fired en mass leading to wildly inconsistent application of the rules...

...then MAYBE this would have been looked upon as something positive. $1/year? That's nothing, really. And if it got rid of the 'bots, so much the better. And maybe it would have led to accountability. You make a terroristic threat? That credit card number can be used to chase you (yes, I know, that could be abused by authoritarian governments with subpoena power).

But after all that's happened, there's just no way that this will be viewed as A Good Thing.

Economic viability should not be the only measure of success. Are we all so cynically greed-bound that the right move is the one that makes the most money? The trajectory our technology is contingent, and it is set when people in a meeting decide, for example, that they can make a lot of money from an infinitely-scrollable, ever-present feed...or that it would be profitable to automatically corral users into cognitive bubbles.

Money is not so much the problem, but privacy. And if you can pay anonymously, a government could still create 100,000 bots for $100,000 per year.

Do we really still need to say formerly Twitter?

Even stones know that and even then who cares, it’s X now.
