Custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU
• Three symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each
• Two hardware threads per core; six hardware threads total
• VMX-128 vector unit per core; three total
• 128 VMX-128 registers per hardware thread
• 1 MB L2 cache

The G5 does not support L2 cache.

it's not a G5, but Apple says the G5 does support a L2 cache

http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html

L2 Cache 512K per processor

This is a standard by which processors can be benchmarked; so yes, they are all created equal. ;)

Actually I'm sure I just read today that gigaflops can be used to measure different aspects or something like that.

First of all its just ONE processor.

3 Cores running at 3.2 ghz.. not 3 total CPU's

Also if you check out the latest Toms Hardware Guide article on the XBOX 360
it says that that they are using G5 (Apple) systems to do all the demos right now.... so that stuff we saw on MTV ( what a pathetic show it was) was running on Apple Hardware.

No, the G5 systems are the development kits.

On MTV they had the actual XBox 360 there.

a core IS a CPU

I'm not sure what distinction you are trying to make, but a "core" really is a CPU.

Three cores on one chip runs just like three chips with one core each (except maybe faster, if the intra-core communication is faster than intra-core communication).

It's one chip, but it has three complete processors on it.

The FLOPs on the Xbox (and the Mac) aren't measured, they're theoretical absolute peak.

The Top500 Supercomputer FLOPs are measured, but those FLOPs are often wildly "optimistic" compared to real program performance - particulary on clusters of small computers.

I stand corrected. I had it slightly wrong. See wikipedia FLOPS :)

EDIT: Even so, I stand by my belief that 1 teraflop is a gross over-exaggeration. :p

I think that 1 teraflop spec is the equivalent to the speedometer on my car that shows up to 240km/h yes it is a 2002 civic dx model roaring at 115 hp but I do not think I could ever possibly push it at 240 km/h *about 150 miles an hour for you american folk* without A) sh%t either falling apart or B) I get pulled over by a cop doing 150 km/h.

This thing wouldn't touch a PowerMac except for the next gen graphics card...

I think I can honestly say that you are one of the rudest people I've ever read postings by on MR. I don't know if you are just too pompous for your own good and like to tell people in a rude way when their wrong...or what. I've read all of your postings in this thread, and have noticed that the ONLY time you are nice to another poster is when you realize that they (having been a part of the team in charge of the hardware in discussion) know more about what you are talking about than you do. Every third or so posting you made was to correct someon, or just flat out tell them their wrong. I'd hate to know you personally if every third thought that comes out of your mouth was a correction, however I don't see how anyone can be that rude in real life, so it must simply be the veil of anonymity that allows you to be so arrogant.

Regardless if you are right or wrong on a point, you can either choose to disagree and let them know you think they are wrong in a nice, constructive way, or you can be an ass. I'm not posting this to argue with you, but to simply point out something which you may not know you were doing...being an extremely rude MR member.

So translated that basically means:

These specs are completely bogus but we are going to try to brainwash the masses that the Xbox360 is the best before we get smashed by Sony?

It was bad enough when Sony basically killed Sega with their hype/FUD based on bogus theoretical numbers. With Microsoft I wouldn't doubt the hardware they are touting probably won't even be in the machine.

My thoughts exactly.

My apologies, you are correct. I replied in haste because I had just finished telling someone else about that.

I honestly did not intend to be rude but looking at it I most certainly was. Sorry.

I apologize very much. I'll try to be more constructive. Gah- having a disability and bad social skills really sucks when you can't tell how rude you're being till someone points it out :( I'm usually very polite in real life...

Dang. I'm really, really sorry.

The only thing the general media is going to notice is Microsoft driven systems were first to 3Ghz three times

Intel
AMD
PowerPC

Oh. And that Steve Jobs (nobody talks about Apple) promised 3Ghz in 8-04 and as of 5-05 has not yet arrived.

Steve.

Stop over promising.

Start over delivering.

Preferably MORE consumer products. The iPod is a hit.

Bring us iVideo.

And ATT Edge based Phones/Blackberries/iBook devices.

I want BANDWIDTH and FULL CAPABILITIES on the GO!!

That is the "KILLER DEVICE" of the year.

no these specs are real. they have been announced. they are real. as real as listed on xbox360.com as we speak.

What i would like to know is how much money microsfot will be losing per each console becuse with 3.2ghz chips in there whether or not they are g5s thats still pretty friggin expensive on the CPU ALONE. Pricing will be key and thats what i'm waiting for.

I think I got too much into this thread- to the point that I started making snap responses to anything anyone said, and basicly became rude and annoying.

Really sorry guys. I'm gonna back out of this thread. Don't hold the way I've acted in this thread against me later on, this is (I hope anyway, I'm not too good at telling) out of character for me.

No worries! I think you do know a lot about this subject, and it should be pointed out that the Xbox processor is NOT a G5....I'm just glad that you can see that you were rude peviously...that's more than most can do.

From what I read, users with the free silver package will be able to play games free on weekends.

This has not been confirmed yet.

didn't know about the weekend thing.

But it can't run xbox 1 games just because it is powerPC and not x86 and all xbox 1 games are all written for x86 cpus, so the only way it can run xbox 1 games is if there is a x86 cpu in the x360 or if it acts like virtual PC and makes it think it is a x86 computer. which i doubt.

It seems like apple has been seriously stitched up by IBM.

I 'm not suggesting that apple should use the Xbox cpu but this development obviously has discredited all the speculations suggesting that the G5 has reached it's clock speed limit.

It also shows how ridiculous the latest power Mac update really was.

If IBM could manufacture a Triple Core PPC at 3.2 GHz for Microsoft and a Quad Core PPC at 4.0 GHz for Sony there is absolutely no excuse for not speed bumping the 2.5ghz G5 to 3.0ghz or even making it a dual Core at the earlier speed.

The people at IBM have obviously been busy over the last couple of years developing some revolutionary technologies for their PPC chips.
All that at the expense of Apple ofcourse, which has simply been left in the dark.

It is as simple as that really...

They'll probably sell more processors to the makers of the 3 big game computers than they sell for the Mac models.

Isn't Apple supposed to get the goodies first?
As stated in all the previous posts, Microsoft uses a different PPC design for their XBOX than does Apple for their Macs. These PPC chips in the 360 are streamlined for massive floating point operations, in executive order, whereas in the G5, it is out of order. Very much different processor designs and implementations.

"**** 'em"

He's widely quoted as saying that about Apple's (loyal) customers.. Google it.

I wish this had never been posted. This is MacRumors not Xbox360Rumors. I don't care what type of PowerPC CPU this thing is running, it still has a Microsoft Operating System. And we all know what a cracker jack job Microsoft does with Operating Systems. This whole thread has done nothing but to lure the slimy Apple hating Microsoft butt-kissing people out from under their rocks. Who cares what OS you or I am using. I mean it's nobody's business but your own what type of software you use. If you like Mac OS X you like Mac OS X, if you like Windows you like Windows, and if you like Linux you like Linux. This whole war is dead. Apple is not going to die and neither is Microsoft.
