[QUOTE="ardchoille50, post: 21396454, member: 890949”]… difficult to see …[/QUOTE]

More than that, the icon is ambiguous. I drew attention to the ambiguity during the open test phase. For anyone with an interest: my current signature includes a link to that discussion.

Clicking the icon has a different effect from the link that I offered. Simply clicking the icon presents the tree – the hierarchy of sub-forums – in an interface that prevents an overview of all parts of the tree.

Side note (not to be discussed here): this post exmplifies broken quoting. For this bug, which may be a regression, Ill follow up properly, in an appropriate topic, within a day or two.

I don't know the proper name for it, other than a labeled or covered link, where you have some words that have an added hyperlink, but you can't see the linked url.

There is this: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

Versus this: bbcode <- a link or hyperlink.

To turn the word "bbcode" into a link, you copy the url of the desired link, select the word in the post you desire to turn into a link, in this case bbcode, press the link button, paste in the url you copied and it will be applied to the selected text.

The Problem? The color variation as it appears on my iPad is so subtle in text edit mode (on my iPad) that it's hard to tell if the link has been applied. It becomes easier to see after the reply has been posted. I suggest that the link color be made more distinct while in text edit mode, if that is possible.

This may have been posted in some of the threads but where is the "Advanced Search" where you can select a word(s) and search just thread titles for specific word(s)???

Click the magnifying glass in the upper right, then click the little cog and the advanced options appear.

Hint

The very recently decluttered user interface to MacRumors Forums should be an opportunity to break from the tradition of multi-subject and/or off-topic mixtures and mergers.

Previously, within the constraints of the vBulletin-based forum, mixing and merging of posts was encouraged. Sometimes automated!

Time, now, to break free!

Posts that are both focused (single-subject) and on-topic are more immediately likeable.

Logically: the reduced clutter allows each writer to be concise without appearing to waste space.

Thanks to MacRumors staff and @Audentio.

Tip: not showing an avatar

If you delete your current avatar, there will remain a generic head and shoulders avatar at your profile page.

In some other places where avatars are shown, no generic heads or shoulders are shown.

The non-appearance may please readers who prefer to be without the distraction of avatars in topics.

Examples

A long topic, at a point where no-one uses an avatar:

A different point in the same topic:

2015-06-04 23-28-22 screenshot.png

Side note

If there's a style sheet workaround to hide all avatars, the workaround can appear in a separate post.

I'm not sure if this is known yet or not.

Regarding the search function, if you want to search by keywords such as 'Coffee' or 'Espresso' in the same search, as opposed to 'Coffee' and 'Espresso' do it like this 'Coffee | Espresso' in the search box (minus the quotes).

That will return results with threads or posts with either one of those words.

In the past I clicked on Today's posts, and got 36 or so pages of new posts. Even clicking on New Posts gave me pages and pages. Now I click New Posts (Today's posts seems to have vanished), but I get only 4 pages. What am I missing?

Did you perhaps click on "Mark Forums Read" at some point in between? That would have reset the Read counter for you.

Nope. I have never clicked that. This place moves too fast to ever do that without missing something!

So it appears xenforo searches were limited to 200 results. That is 4 pages at 50 per page. I just upped it to 500, so that gives you 10 pages. Not sure what the realistic upper limit to that is. I think our old system capped at 1000.

What I normally do is click on New Posts, let it load, then right-click on Mark Forums Read to open that in a new tab. Go to the second tab and click the Mark forums read button (not the menu item), then go back to the first tab and read through the new posts. This way you don't miss anything.

It's a start. Now if you can just get people to stop posting so much so fast.... ;) When you first did the upgrade to XF, it gave me 8 pages. Ten is definitely an improvement all the way around.

Does that effect your "newest post" in a thread?

Ah the other thing we changed is results per page on xenforo a couple of days ago. It was like 25 before. So the page drop was just reflective of more results per page. Now with the 500, we have more results total.

For those of us who prefer to remove formatting before pasting:

Plain Clip // Carsten Blüm – Mac Development

I rarely allow magnification of Dock items, but here it is:
View attachment 561055

With any icon for the application visible, I simply:
  1. copy
  2. click the Plain Clip icon
  3. paste, e.g. to MacRumors.

I have a snippet defined for TextExpander. I have defined the keystrokes ;cb as the trigger. All I do is copy the text, move to where I want it pasted and type the trigger and voila! the unformatted text is pasted at that location.

If you aren't already using TextExpander, you are missing one of the truly great OS X utilities.

@redheeler it's a useful approach to styling – thanks – however the effect is not always what's required.

If, for example, the cursor is at the tail of styled text … Command-Option-Shift-V.

– instead of removing formatting, it added style (emphasis) to the paste of your text.

How to insert YouTube videos in post
Using an IPad, open the YouTube app, find the appropriate video. Select copy link. In the MacRumors forum, select the insert media button (looks like movie film), paste in the entire link and it will appear in your post as a playable movie!
