Snapdragon 845, OLED screen, true face-ID and an under display fingerprintscanner for half the price of an iPhone X. Insane value of money.
>under display fingerprintscanner
So the scanner on the back is just a fashion statement?

Oh wait nvm, it’s because it’s exclusive to the premium model

Which is inferior to iPhone 8 CPU and GPU, as the support, ecosystem, App Store, materials, integration, security and go on.
In day to day use (speedtest) you won't even notice it. Yet you've to pay more than $500 dollars for a milisecond of difference.

There are 3 versions of the Mi 8.

I don't get it. Why can't they come up with any sort of original design? Either way, all it does is eat away at other Android manufacturer sales. No negative affect on Apple at all.

I agree to a point. A product like this (if it performs as claimed) could turn away some that may be thinking about migrating to iOS for an iPhone X experience. The question is really, how large is that market? I'd agree it is extremely small as of June 2018. :apple:

It's a different culture over there. There doesn't seem to be any concept of IP so the manufacturers rip and build off of each other's designs. They honestly probably see nothing wrong with the Mi8's design but will likely never release it here knowing Apple will sue the pants off them.

Yeah I saw that now, I was a little confused cause I couldn’t see any mention of it on my first glance

I’d be interested to see if the face recognition is IR or RGB based, the fact that it’s both face recognition and fingerprint scanning makes me suspect it’s the latter, but the integrated scanner is cool nonetheless

Really nice looking phone, because it’s copied the iPhone.
However Apple will not take any notice let alone take them to court as it’s not Samsung and not currently a major conpetitor, that’s the only real reason Apple takes Samsung to court, to kill the main competition.

Xiaomi will have little luck in Europe. The market is clearly divided into 30% Apple and Samsung/Huawei (for the 70% android community). I am annoyed by the dumb behavior of this new manufacturer: Instead of attacking the status with technically convincing stuff, it just copies the notch and puty parts into the housins, that roam the world market.
For various architectural reasons, today photo chips are still not capable of reproducing difficult challenges such as real color sunrises. Here I hope for improvements; the pixel madness is so yesterday! Strategic specifications should be geared to technically experienced customers. Neither cheap nor notchy.

Yea, I just don't think that many people who prefer the iOS platform are jumping ship to a Chinese knock off. Someone who prefers Android and doesn't mind bouncing around from phone to phone, sure it makes sense. They see iPhone-like features on the cheap. Are these phones even sold in the US at this point?

Stupid? Or smart? It probably costs less to build than an iPhone X and they're selling it at half the cost.

Well, it's ugly - I guess it just depends on who they are targeting. With cost being the main factor here, sure it's probably is a smart move. I still don't see much of a market for it, but it could work for them. I know this brand is growing, but are they profitable? I don't know much, but was just curious if they can survive.

with apple finally(?) winning the lawsuit against samsung on iphone design, these folks seem to be quite adventurous

Actually you are wrong, the face-ID technology Xiaomi are using is different from the one Apple uses. Also the under display fingerprintscanner is something totally new which isn't being used by Apple.

And you also know why Apple deliberately did not follow this path?!

Next thing they'll do is market it as being a camera with smartphone attached. Then it won't be competing with the iPhone at all...

Same as always, just copy Apple's design. I actually applaud Samsung for creating their own design language, the rest of these manufacturers just take what Apple does.

It is almost like as if they think that hey, we have the moulds already with us, let's just change a thing here and there and we have a lookalike that people will love to flaunt. It only goes to show how deeply the rip-off companies are invested in trying to make a mark on the basis of outer looks, when the majority of users actually use any phone based on the OS they are comfortable with.

Looks like Android copycats are having a tough time not having a bezel at the bottom.

That folded screen and display controller under the fold a little more innovative than people thought huh?

Apple is ahead in hardware too. This is just embarrassing for Xiaomi and won’t have any effect on Apple sales anyway.

You have very little imagination.
The Mi 8 is simply a great all around phone for a very good price.
You don't have to jump any ship or anything, most people will consider this phone based on it's merits: great build quality, material, great specs, modem performance, gps performance, great camera and so on. It's obvious you can't see the forest for the trees if you call the Mi 8 a Chinese knock off.

Also the notch on Android phones ca be easily hidden which is at least an acceptable solution for people that don't like it.
With Apple you don't have this choice.

Apple has set the trend right from 2007 for all to follow in phones. It did that with its MacBook line of portables too, and to some extent, with the iMac (all-in-one concept) too. Hell, companies were even trying to bring out a router that looked like the Airport, they still do! But software is where the difference between Apples and oranges becomes most apparent.
