Apple has set the trend right from 2007 for all to follow in phones. It did that with its MacBook line of portables too, and to some extent, with the iMac (all-in-one concept) too. Hell, companies were even trying to bring out a router that looked like the Airport, they still do! But software is where the difference between Apples and oranges becomes most apparent.
Exactly, the software experience being better on iOS is a given, but now people should see just how far ahead Apple is on hardware too.

It’s almost a year later and the copied Android version still has a bottom bezel and only uses 4,000 data points in its copied FaceID.

Lets not pretend that apple couldn't sell the iphone X for $800-850 though and still make huge profits even accounting for R&D. When you sell as many phones as apple does, R&D ends up being an absolute miniscule cost of the phone.

Having said that I don't blame them for selling it at $1000 if people will still buy it at that price

Apple could not make "huge profits" on the iPhone X if it sold them for $800. We do not know the net profit margin for the iPhone X but we do know Apple's overall net profit margin -- 22.61% for this most recent quarter (higher than average over the past few years but not the highest it's been in the past few years).

What does that mean? It means all things being equal (this isn't a true situation but it's the best assumption we can make without having access to Apple's internal financial documents), Apple's breakeven profit point for the iPhone X is about $800. It's possible Apple's net profit margin on the iPhone X is higher than 22.61% but because there was R&D and initial manufacturing costs associated with a new phone, it's likely lower than 22.61%; net margins will rise over time though.

Of course, if Apple lowered the price, it might sell more and be able to keep similar margins because of cost savings with higher volume production but that's speculation. Apple could sell it for somewhat less than the $1000 and still make a profit; maybe they'd even make a profit at $800 but wouldn't make "huge profits".

Looks like Android copycats are having a tough time not having a bezel at the bottom.

That folded screen and display controller under the fold a little more innovative than people thought huh?

Apple is ahead in hardware too. This is just embarrassing for Xiaomi and won’t have any effect on Apple sales anyway.

Not sure if they care much for the folding screen. It seems like they're willing to settle for a small chin to save a few bucks on manufacturing. It's far from embarrassing for Xiaomi and might even affect Apple's sales in China.

You have very little imagination.
The Mi 8 is simply a great all around phone for a very good price.
You don't have to jump any ship or anything, most people will consider this phone based on it's merits: great build quality, material, great specs, modem performance, gps performance, great camera and so on. It's obvious you can't see the forest for the trees if you call the Mi 8 a Chinese knock off.

Also the notch on Android phones ca be easily hidden which is at least an acceptable solution for people that don't like it.
With Apple you don't have this choice.

That's cool, hope you like it. I prefer iOS to Android so it really isn't something I would consider. Personally, I just don't see many people switching from iOS to this phone.

It is almost like as if they think that hey, we have the moulds already with us, let's just change a thing here and there and we have a lookalike that people will love to flaunt. It only goes to show how deeply the rip-off companies are invested in trying to make a mark on the basis of outer looks, when the majority of users actually use any phone based on the OS they are comfortable with.

Yea I mean, I want my phone to look nice, but it's not the basis of my decision. iOS is the reason I have stuck with Apple and I would imagine most feel the same way and wouldn't consider jumping ship to this phone.

This is also the first Android smartphone to use Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 845 chipset, which features on-device AI processing and a Gigabit LTE X20 modem.

No it's not the first Android. Not even the first Xiaomi. I'm holding a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S right now, equipped with the SD 845. The Samsung S9 / S9+ also have the SD 845 and they are available for a couple of months now. Other flagships as well.

Snapdragon 845, OLED screen, true face-ID and an under display fingerprintscanner for half the price of an iPhone X. Insane value of money.

Yeah, quite surprised at the price. Would be interesting to see what the total cost of materials is after the teardown. Anyone know or have an idea of what the manufacturing costs are for a high end phone?

Oh, and damn what a blatant ripoff.

These things would never penetrate Europe if the EU stood by all their other blather about fairness and justice. Want to hock your wares in Europe? Don’t copy someone else’s design. The EU will look pretty biased against Apple if they allow this kind of barefaced stealing from Apple in their markets, but are all about what’s “fair” when it comes to Apple paying billions in back taxes.

This is why Apple hates leaks so much. It gives companies like this a few more months head start on pumping out these clones in China.

Actually you are wrong, the face-ID technology Xiaomi are using is different from the one Apple uses. Also the under display fingerprintscanner is something totally new which isn't being used by Apple.
Funny you say that, because I was originally going to write something along the lines of 'the trouble comes when people think the android version of FaceID is akin to Apples, which it isn't', but I decided against it. I agree with you.
My point is that they can charge less because they let someone else lead the way, spending big bucks in the process, and they just follow in the slipstream.

Apple should do the same... Oh yeah I forgot! Copying a regime without human rights and no regards to pollution might not be cool  -nevermind.

On what planet is that a huge bezel?

On no planet, but since he uses an iPhone X, he would find anything remotely resembling a bezel as huge. I find my 2011 MBP so thick compared to my 2016, and I have to tell myself repeatedly that hey, I bought it in 2011, and it is STILL one of the thinnest laptops after 7 years. It's just that the eyes get accustomed so easily, our Dan got accustomed too.

LoL you are acting like the EU has a duty or responsibility towards Apple or something.
You are funny.

How can you say this is far from embarrassing for Xiaomi? This is practically an exact copy of a phone Apple announced in September from a design perspective and has hardware shortcomings like the chin.

They copied FaceID, the notch, the freaking marketing, the camera placement, the colors, the silver around the camera, the wallpaper, the status bar notifications, etc.

It's a total JOKE and I hope they get sued.

Any Chinese in the market for an iPhone will buy the real thing. Apple is killing it in China at the moment. It's an aspirational brand and Chinese with money don't want a copy.

Do tell me where you see that anyone, anywhere, has been able to ape the security of Face ID. I'll wait.

Why pour billions into RnD when you have Apple/Samsung doing it for you. :D Ridiculous.

You know, there maybe so few things that Dotard has said that I agree with, but his rant about the Chinese disregarding IP and Patent law is one of the few.

Now, I don't agree with how he's addressing it, but I do agree that the east really needs to be brought to justice with all of their ripoffs, and not just in phones or tech.

Apple can't. What will they copy? The only thing they can copy is the lower price tag. :D Rest everything is copied from Apple, in terms of outward design.
