Too bad (Apple) people have to deflect from the point of the article by blaming the fact it looks cheap, runs Android, etc., instead of saying how great this form factor looks. If you have to point fingers, point them at Apple and ask why Apple didn't do this first? "Apple will wait and do it right"...that should be Apple's motto. Unfortunately, copying other manufacturers (who do it first) doesn't help Apple on the innovation front. What happened to Apple doing things first and getting it "right"?

My biggest complaint from a design point of view are the rounded edges of the LCD Screen.

My first reaction was; so what? How does an edge-to-edge screen enhance the functionality? It's like when people complain that the iMac has an "ugly thick bezel" - that bezel helps to separate the content from your environment, and prevents you getting fingerprints on the active area.

I mean look at the (presumingly) iPhone in your hand. Imagine the same screen without the side bezels and half the bezel size on the top and bottom. I think it's going to make the phone a lot more comfortable to carry around and to use, especially with one hand.

I just hope that if apple does implement this design, they will do so to get a smaller overall form factor rather than a slightly bigger screen. While I would consider both options an upgrade, I think the SE model's popularity proves that I'm not alone in wishing for a smaller form factor, even if at this point I'm too used to the 4.7" screen to go back.

Yep this is a beauty.

I can't wait for iPhone 8! A single sheet of glass and water resistant to 50 metres. :)

The benefit is device size/screen ratio. What i mean is, in the size of iPhone 6s i can get bigger display, may be upto 5.2-5.3 which would be close to plus size, without making it uncomfortable holding it.

Because you'll miss all the content in the extreme corners of the screen (none!) or because you'll miss the blade-sharp corners of the case scratching and cutting you when you handle it or put it in your pocket? Who wants a phone with 90 degree corners?

Because this isn't about a phone, it is about a tech breakthrough. Big difference.
Read the article.

When will Xiaomi achieve the tech breakthrough of designing their own processors and operating system? That's one of the funniest things about these types of threads…changing the screen or removing a bezel is treated like it's a significant accomplishment.

Like I said, from a design perspective, I like the phone to have rounded edges and a square screen. I dont' want my phone with 90 degree corners. I want my screen to have 90 degree corners.

It's a copy of the Aquos crystal ;)

You're kidding, right? Their own operating system? I checked with Microsoft and they said that isn't working so well for them. And, the world doesn't need yet another proprietary processor that only one brand can run.

Wrong on both counts. The screen turns enough heads that it doesn't need some no-name CPU or OS.

Nice to see some innovation .... come-on Apple ... Looking forward to seeing your version

The millions who've purchased the S7 Edge will disagree. ;)

The greatest way to get Apple to produce an edgeless iPhone is to buy an edgeless phone from a competitor. Apple responds to sales... sales of their competition vs. their own sales.

Apple was firmly against phablets until the competition was selling well, THEN Apple produced one. Same with a mini tablet.

If sales of edgeless phones are weak, then Apple will not produce one.

I'm not sure I understand the obsession with screen size and further don't understand the removal of bezels. I think the purpose of removing the bezels should be to allow a large screen to exist in a smaller device. I have the iPhone 6 Plus which I needed to get as a test device. The large screen changed my usage pattern. Now I need to type and use the device with two hands instead of one which can cause a lot of issues with juggling the device, especially when doing other things. This is exacerbated by the case which adds to the thickness of the device.

When you hold the device, you typically need to hold on to something. I assume that's why they kept the bottom bezel, but it also reduces the symmetry of the device from a design perspective. I also worry that the touch screen would pick up on accidental touches of the screen unless they have some sort of touch rejection built in (doubtful) or better yet incorporate some kind of sensor on the edge of the device to prevent touch when being grasped.

Another issue with a lack of bezel is cases. What can the case attach to exactly to be held in place securely?

Another concern is features. For instance, how good is the sound from a piezo actuator vibrating the edge of the device? What if you are holding it? Wouldn't that mute the sound? Stereo sound seems like it would also not be possible. Front facing camera? Nope. Accurate proximity detection? Dunno. Accidental presses of side switches when holding the device? Sound quality when talking on the phone (since there is no ear driver)

These are some concerns... and all for the sake of an edge to edge screen. Engineering is about managing compromises and a well-designed and engineered device works to make the perfect combination of those realities given technology. You can advance technology to make these sorts of things possible... but I'm not sure that's what was done here. It seems like the typical "lets make the screen bigger" bullcrap from Android manufacturers that have no other means of innovation.

Exactly! How do you reasonably hold on to and use something like this without gobs of multi-touch software running to detect your true intentions? And can it even be done when two or three fingers are touching the edges? Simply attempting to place this device on the table will initiate false touch responses. Do you need a non-conducting glove on one hand?

Right. Because developing your own OS for mobile and having it be successful is actually quite difficult. And so is developing your own processor. Xiaomi and other companies aren't capable of it, despite Apple rolling those out 9 years ago. That's why these companies stick to spec sheet "breakthroughs" with off-the-shelf tech that someone else developed.

Right, because Xiaomi hasn't had a history of aping other competitors' designs, skinning their OS to look like iOS, or heck, even right down to their brand naming.

Case in point, Xiaomi Mi Note 2. Can't imagine where they got that name from.

The only reason Xiaomi is introducing this phone is because they know it doesn't have to be produced in gigantic volumes like the latest model iPhone. Everybody conveniently forgets that Apple has to balance new technology with gigantic production demands that dwarf their competitors models.

Complete and total vaporware.

We made this concept product because according to the internet, this is what amateur hacks think comes next in phones.
