It's expensive, if it is the starting price. If this is the only model, then it is expensive. I think the starting price for iPad 2 will be 599. Also, I think they will lower the price for the iPad 1 models (299,399,499:16,32,64 gig).

So, I think iPad will have several models from 299 to 799 (wifi) and 399 to 899 (wifi,3g).

So, yeah, Xoom is expensive.

Starting price of 299 dollars? So iPad will be cheaper than ipod touch? No. It makes no sense.

Xoom is a 3G/4G model. ipad 499/599/699 dollars you are talking about is not 3G/4G model. It only has wi-fi without GPS.

ipad 32GB model with 3G costs 729 dollars now and that's only 70 dollars different from Xoom. Calling it expensive is not correct and people are being extremely biased. We can ask motorola to come out with wi-fi model only and compete with ipad's 499/599 dollars pricing, but this Xoom has 3G and will be LTE compatible. It makes no sense people are screaming and crying out for Retina display blah blah, dual core blah blah, 1GB ram, 5 megapixel camera, 128 GB storage, but yet they are not willing to pay more. No, there is no free lunch here and xoom is only 70 dollars more than iPad as of now. No one knows what iPad 2 will be like, but I don't think it will be more powerful than xoom. It will be similar.

Bottom line, you are saying expensive because 800 dollars is a lot of money. but, it's not overpriced compare to ipad.

I am glad you do not run apple... If iPad was cheaper than ipod touch by any means, I would be confused as hell as a customer.

It's expensive because there's no other options. Even the low capacity iPad 2 will have similar specs for only $499. You can only get it in one set order at $799 (having said this, I do realize it's not out yet, and no release date has been confirmed).

I don't see a $299 iPad. Crazy stuff has happened but even I have a hard time with that one LOL

I didn't even expect the Xoom to be $500 but Notion Ink Adam has pretty decent specs and to my knowledge the OS is open source so they probably get it free. Anyway if a start up company in India can bring in a tablet with a PQ screen in the $600 you would think other companies with more buying power could also. NI also put R&D developing a UI.

I don't care for the looks of the UI or the device but it's a nice spec'd out machine with a lower cost.

How many actual users exist that dont own another idevice or an iphone besides the ipad?

raises hand

i have a mac pro, macbook pro (courtesy of work) and an ipad

my phone is just a little samsung POS that was basically free

i got the ipad to take over for the mbp (i hate carrying that around)

1. Motorola already confirmed that there will be wi-fi models.
2. Again 800 dollars is a lot of money, but this xoom is not that more expensive than iPad. But, I guess most of you are having a hard time understanding that 32GB iPad wifi+3G also costs 729 dollars. But, hey. W/e.

3. This info is coming from Verizon and it's people choice to choose wifi or 3G/4G model. If they desire to choose 3G/4G model, then expect a price tag like this because they actually costs money. LTE is something new and you will pay money for it.

iPad 2 will have similar Specs? Maybe, but there is also a chance that it won't like rumors saying it will have only megapixel camera. Xoom has 5 megapixel Camera.

Keep dreaming. These tablets don't come cheap, but they are not overpriced. Fine with me, if you cannot escape from that 499 dollars price tag, but you won't get Xoom 3G/4G model at 600 dollars. No way in hell with those specs like HDMI, 10.1 inch screen (That's bigger than iPad btw...), 5 megapixel and 2 mega on front with 32GB storage. iPad 2? Let' see it will have all that. Answer, No, it won't. It won't be LTE compatiable and it won't have HDMI output for sure. Rest is based on speculation.

No it is not expensive, period.

iPad 32GB wi-fi 3G costs 729 dollars already and I expect iPad 2 to be the same. Xoom has 32GB storage, but has bigger screen at 10.1 compare to 9.7. It costs 800 dollars and specs are really good and decent.

People needs to stop dreaming. Tablets are not cheap gadgets, period.

You really need a reality check. The ipad 3G/32GB is also expensive at $729. They making well over 50% profit margin. Something that isn't true in most of the laptop/netbook market.

http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns/Ne...eMaximumProfitsforApple,iSuppliEstimates.aspx

That is $287 production, $729 retail. That is a hefty 60% profit margin.

Now if a competitor actually wants some sales the need to undercut Apple, not overprice them. There is plenty of fat to trim in those hefty margins.

10.1 inch screen (That's bigger than iPad btw...),

You keep saying it like it is a significant difference. That is 45.8 vs 45.2 sq inches of screen, or 1.3% larger. That is nothing.

I was really referring Xoom is not overpriced compare to iPad costs since people are comparing xoom to iPad.

Also, I never said there is a significant difference. There is 80 dollars price difference between iPad and Xoom and I said that extra screen is the one of the reason why it costs more.

You assume too much.

I never said these tablets are cheap and they are not. They aren't for everyone in the first place. But, people calling xoom being so expensive and calling iPad affordable. It makes no sense. But, you are talking about different matter. My explanation has nothing to do iPad being cheap. Thanks for the reference with your quick assumption.

Apple will lower the older model. So how much hower? Maybe 100 drop or 200. So, maybe 399 for the low end model.

So ipad will stay in the market for 399 dollars and costs same as iPod touch 64GB? They will ask people why in the world 3.5 inch Mp3 player costs as same as 9.7 inch tablet.

People will tell apple now that ipod touch is too expensive.

1 - I know that. Question is, how much will it cost?

iPad 2 will be out soon. We'll see, I guess. ;)

Okay, iPad wifi/3g vs. Xoom wifi/3g at launch ( lte comes later)
2010 model (if apple drops only by 100): 499,599,699 versus Xoom: 800 (32gb)

Okay iPad 2 wifi/3g vs. xoom wifi at launch: iPad 2 (599,699,799)
Xoom 800; apple's lowest price 599 and xoom 800

Xoom is too expensive; we are talking about affordability not a bargain. Moto should have a version of Xoom at a better starting price.

Xoom has better spec than iPad 1. We don't know what iPad 2 will have. Base on rumors: Xoom has better cameras and LTE. That's it. iPad 2 may have 15 hours battery life. Who knows. I suspect 16 gig storage will go away and it will start at 32gb and go up to 128gb. So, iPad 2 wifi/3g at 799 has 128gb which is better than 32gb Xoom. So, iPad 2 still a better bargain (apple's app store have 100,000 apps for tablets, over 300,000 apps for iphone, itune, etc). So, iPad 2 is a better bargain, too.

Apple has continuously said they've been able to keep low price points/ high profits because they create everything in-house. Definitely a leg-up on the competition.

iPod nano cost 250 and it cost more than iPod touch 8gb 220.

No it is not expensive, period. I would agree that 800 dollars is a lot of money, but this thing is no where near being overpriced. People think it's overpriced because everyone are dreaming that somehow tablets should start at 499 dollars. No. No. No.

OK, I think we can all see that you believe the Xoom to be a tremendous value at $800, presumably because it has seemingly powerful specs...

But I ask you, have you tried one?

You sound very sure of yourself, and seem to be an expert on the value of this unreleased product. I mean, they demo'd it at CES with just a video loop playing of the far-from-finished OS, for goodness sake...

What if Android 3.0 needs a dual core chip because it is a compete pig of inefficiency? It might need all that horsepower just to deliver an acceptable iPad-like UI experience for all we know! :)

I read somewhere that the reason Android's OS is laggy and doesn't scroll smoothly is because the graphics processing takes place in software, not in a dedicated GPU. This is done to accommodate all the different manufacturer's hardware it runs on. As you seem very knowledgable on the subject Android 3.0, do you know if this is true on the Xoom, hcho3?

Also, could you please share with us what exactly it is you plan to do with all of these specs should they prove to perform as "fast" as they read? Thanks.

You don't beat the champ with a draw. "Hey, our specs are better and we only cost a bit more." You don't knock off an established product like that when it has momentum and mind share. The only people that bite on that are haters that won't buy the current favorite under any circumstance.

Obviously you're stoked or you wouldn't be replying to every post that anyone else conjures up in this thread. I just think you don't see the big picture.

And everyone has different needs, but really.. HDMI and 2 cameras? Yawn.. My iPhone already has 1 camera too many and my tablet needs precisely zero. HDMI.. really? No thanks. In fact I would PREFER no cameras and no HDMI, personally.

Also, to the post above trying to quote profit margin based on a bag of parts?

...
So, iPad 2 wifi/3g at 799 has 128gb which is better than 32gb Xoom.

Your point is very strong... when you make up the numbers.

No it is not expensive, period. I would agree that 800 dollars is a lot of money, but this thing is no where near being overpriced. People think it's overpriced because everyone are dreaming that somehow tablets should start at 499 dollars. No. No. No.

Don't compare apple to orange. Compare apple to apple.
iPad 2 is not out yet, but it will have cameras like motorola xoom.

iPad 32GB wi-fi 3G costs 729 dollars already and I expect iPad 2 to be the same. Xoom has 32GB storage, but has bigger screen at 10.1 compare to 9.7. It costs 800 dollars and specs are really good and decent.

How does extra 70 dollars can be called as much as being expensive? It is not.

People needs to stop dreaming. Tablets are not cheap gadgets, period.

iPad 32GB WiFi + 3G may cost 729$ but not all want 3G and 32GB space. 16GB WiFi is sufficient for me. For many its 500$ vs 800$. You can't convince them saying you get value for that money like extra space and 3G. We just don't need it.

iPad 32gb with 3G = $729
Xoom 32gb with 3G = $800. The Xoom is almost the same price, but it makes up for it with: 5mp, HDMI, expandable memory and 4G upgradable.

Xoom Wifi+ 3G =800 dollars
iPad Wifi+ 3G = 729 dollars

Given the fact that xoom has a lot of better specs than iPad with 2 cameras. There is no way anyone can claim that xoom is overpriced. It's not. If you were expecting it to be cheaper, perhaps, you were hoping. But, these companies are running for money and they have to make profits.

Good point... I won't even consider the Xoom if they don't come out with a 32 Gb wifi only model which if figures stay in line would be around $550.00.. I can see $550 for a 32Gb Xoom being competitive but $800 plus Verizon data fees?? game over iPad not challenged..

People forget that Apple's cheaper price (excluding comparison of hardware - we can't do that until iPad 2 is announced) gets you a very reliable iOS, iTunes and access to a huge set of very good apps.

Android gets you sub-par apps (from what I've seen lately), isn't very stable (after owning a version 2 device) and is still in its infancy. Googles ambition to be the mobile version of the PC (one OS software fits all hardware) has its drawbacks.

Still don't get why you need HDMI out (when you can stream over a local network) and a 5MP camera (is there any flash on the Xoom?).

Good luck to Motorola, but they'll need to cut that $800 to be competitive. Apple's stamped their product as a world leader already and that won't be easy to shrug off.

You can play games on your large screen over HDMI I believe.
Also of course, play back video only needing to carry 1 cable with you if you are on the move.

And yes, the Xoom has a dual LED flash unit for it's rear 5MP camera.
