How many actual users exist that dont own another idevice or an iphone besides the ipad?

I'm one of those users! I don't use a phone or data often enough to justify an expensive 2 year smartphone contract (I work from home), but I do need a way to check in w/ email and do a little light work on the go. I don't own a laptop, either.

My iMac at home + iPad 3G + 14.99 data plan combo works great for my needs. I'm not generally an early adopter, but the iPad was the first device that really met my mobile needs, so I bought it early after its release and it has been perfect for me.

I'm another one also.
The iPad is my only Apple product. I cannot buy an iMac.
I don't have a smartphone with a camera either as I have no use for one at all.
All I want my phone for is, shock horror, to make phone calls and send/receive text messages. To me battery life is my no/1 priority and things like the iPhone any others have an utterly appalling battery life, I don't know how people live with them.
Also their ring tones are far too quiet to be of any use in a loud environment.

You don't beat the champ with a draw. "Hey, our specs are better and we only cost a bit more." You don't knock off an established product like that when it has momentum and mind share. The only people that bite on that are haters that won't buy the current favorite under any circumstance.

Exactly. If you want to beat the iPad (let alone iPad 2) you need better specs AND lower price points. The average selling price of the iPad has been around $600. So if the Xoom really does start at $800 (without contract - I don't even want to think about it if it is $800 WITH contract) and there are not lower price points, they are greatly overshooting THAT market. It is reminding me of "The Homer". Adding too many features that not everyone wants while moving the price up out of the market segment.

There isn't much point comparing the Xoom and iPad's pricing - you're comparing a tablet that hasn't been released yet against a shipping product which has been out for 10 months and is due a refresh. The Xoom isn't going to be going head-to-head against the iPad, it'll be up against the iPad 2.

Yippie... Making someone pay for 'features' that they don't want, need, and won't use. Do yall ACs know that the HDMI out won't output protectected content? Do ya? Play a game on the big screen? How the heck do you look at your tablet AND the big screen at the same time ?

iPad 1 32 gig wifi $599. Works flawlessly (with the exception of Excel compatability).

Xoom rumored product with rumored price of $800. If the Galaxy Tab is any indication, it won't work flawlessly (and will still have Excel incompatibility).

Motorola, please take Xoom, turn it sideways, and well you know the rest.

The problem with what are saying about:
"Making someone pay for 'features' that they don't want, need, and won't use. "
Is that people have different uses for what is a general purpose tablet computing device.

I want and would use a reasonable quality rear camera, I would also use a HMDI out to play back games, and/or take round a friends house to watch a non protected movie on their large screen.

I will never EVER use facetime. So if I wanted the next model I'm paying for things I don't want, and not getting things I do want.

You see, this is the problem with some people. They cannot accept that other people may have different wants and needs to themselves.

Just because I won't use something does not mean I will go around shouting it should not be fitted. I don't want Facetime and I don't want a front mounted Camera at all, but I'm happy for there to be one, as some people may use it sometimes.

No, I do understand that everyone's needs are different. I understand that perfectly. But I also have several thumb drives, to include a $50 32 gig model. Wouldn't that be better for watching a movie at a friends house? I go by the 'KISS' principle (keep it simple stupid). I want things to just work. Do you know, I have like 8 ways to stream Netflix? Do I really care that my game console streams Netflix or that it has a web browser? (a horrible web experience, it would be better without. Yes, I don't use it.) How about a nice simple TV monitor ? Nice and simple and it just works. Nope, can't have that.

The Galaxy Tab has all of the 'features', and I find it underwhelming.

I have preached on other threads about opening up the dock connector. That would be great.

Have you decided yet on how you are going to get audio into other rooms of house?

Sure, but when you add too many features that too many people don't want you end up with feature bloat leading to price bloat leading to shrinking your market. At $800 the Motorola Xoom has entered that territory.

Name Brand Value

You guys who say the Xoom isn't expensive compared to the ipad are correct from a money stand point but wrong on the face value.

You are buying a Motorola device here. There is NO WAY to justify spending $800 on a tablet from Motorola compared to spending $829 on an iPad 3G 64GB from APPLE.

Sorry to sound aristocratically pompous here but in the eyes of every single consumer on this planet, Apple gear is always valued higher than anything competing brand name even with "lower specs". In the consumers eyes, buying this motorola xoom at $800 is just outrageously expensive. Buying the iPad at $829 is outrageously expensive but justified for the same reason LV handbags are overpriced...but until you own one you don't understand.

So indeed priced at $800 is just too expensive. You can wait and see all you want but from the start, it has already failed even before it's being sold. Perhaps you will see 1-5% of these being sold compared to the ipad 1.

It's like buying a PC laptop for $1000 - that's a complete RIPOFF no matter whatever high specs because it's a PC laptop...sad but true.

Not only is this expensive compared to iPad it is also expensive compared to similar Android tablets.

The Asus Transformer with Tegra 2, 10.1 IPS screen, starts at $399. This is the kind of pricing you need if you want to steal iPad sales.

You can play games on your large screen over HDMI I believe.
Also of course, play back video only needing to carry 1 cable with you if you are on the move.

And yes, the Xoom has a dual LED flash unit for it's rear 5MP camera.
Not sure why a dual LED flash would be necessary. Hmm. Anyways, isn't that what AirPlay is for?

I just hope it's greater than 1MP. Really?

+ 1. This should help sum it up.

Every android device should be priced at $99 or given for free. That's how it is perceived by consumers. Just like netbooks are overpriced at $400. Everyone expects non-apple products to be massively CHEAPER than apple products. So the Xoom is indeed too expensive when in reality it's quite a bargain compared to the iPad...but you know what? I'd rather pay $829 for an iPad 1 than $800 for this motorola pad no matter what specs they tout...because in the end, the user experience is just so good on the ipad. I've never used the xoom so I can't compare but if it's an android device, it sucks. (my personal experiences)

As an iPad owner i think that Xoom could be my next tablet, I don't think iPad 2 will come out with some innovative stuff as a retina display nor super-p hardware, only two cams, a little bit more ram and CPU, new lighter design and that's it!.

A friend of mine has a Htc smartphone with android, and it looks very good to me and fast, he loves it, and android tablets are offering some functionality iPad not: USB, Micro SD card slot, a file system, flash. Android apps scale up naturally and there's no problem using different screen resolutions.

I love Mac products, I also have an iMac, but let's be honest, iPad 2 will probably be a fail compare to new Android tabs. Maybe iPad 3 will be the new tab killer.

I agree with this, and I hope the iPad2 doesn't go there. There will always be someone that will use any feature you include, but there has to be some serious thought here.

If you include useless features and hardware no one cares about except for the 1% minority who in reality won't even buy this xoom tablet, then your android device tablet will fail. It's really not always about the specs guys. You know this.

I have an HD camera (logitech) - but the people I'm talking to have a slow internet connection or their monitor is just some lame TN panel - so what if I'm in HD and they can't even tell the difference because of bandwidth limitations? I have 6 usb ports on my pc laptop in which only 2 gets used all the time. I have a quad core desktop but I use it to surf the internet only. Sometimes I encode a video or two and yes it is blazingly fast but then again, I save probably 10-15 minutes encoding time tops compared to my macbook pro. I don't encode videos for a living. I also have a router that has 20 networking features but non of them are turned on except for Wireless N, dual band; one port forwarding, and a wpa2 security code. I have a PS3 that is just king of multimedia usage but I don't even use it for gaming just for streaming videos. The list goes on and on...

When are you spec whores gonna learn that it's not just about specs. I'm very sure the iPad 2 won't have much more compared to the iPad 1 but you cannot call it a fail because it will take a dump on the android tablets including this xoom.

Umm, okay.

Moving on...

It would go against Apple's philosophy if they did...

I was hoping or dreaming:p that the Xoom would come in cheaper. The Adam has nice specs and it comes in cheaper, a start up company with no buying power although they don't have the labor over head Moto does.

If you compare the specs on the Xoom yes the price is similar to the iPad counterpart.

Here is were I think Moto made their mistake and that's leading with a spec'd out model that cost a lot of money.

So far every blog or forum I've gone to since that price has been leaked has said that price is waay to high although many wrongfuly compared it to the $499 iPad.

IMO Moto could have made a hit if they came out with a wifi model with this model 1st or even a 16GB model that compares in price to the iPad.

The most popular selling iPad in the US was the 16GB wfi+3G so that's $630
& the 16GB wifi is also up there at $499.

That shows you were the sweet spot for the cusomer market is.

More people would have been willing to try it at those prices even if it was just a tad more. Then they could have brought out the $800 tablet after it has established it's self as a winner.

See thats the thing about Android. It comes on different devices. People are going to wait on a cheaper model although lesser spec'd but at the end of the day it's going to play Angry Birds the same way the Xoom is. With iOS & QNX there's only one device that will run that OS so it's either buy their product or not.

At $800 it will sell to Android fanboys & a few Apple haters but it's not going to be what it could have been I don't think

Why's it wrongfully compared to the $499 iPad. (Mine is a 32 gig wifi.)

It's about NOT paying for 'features' (read as s#%t) that you don't want, need, care to have, or will never use. The iPad gives users a choice, the vaporware Xoom does not. So a price comparison to what you want on one unit vs what is being offered on another is correct, even if the other offers more ****.

Because it should be compared to the 32GB Wifi+3G ipad which is similar in specs is $729. That's an Apple to Apple comparison.

But iPhone sales (two models) are compared with sales of 20+ handsets; compared with sales that include buy one get one free. I hear from the Android side it's not Android's fault iOS only comes on two models, so it's not really Apple's fault the Xoom didn't answer with anything comparable to the lower-end iPad.

I knew someone would say that but my point is if Product A has one product line and Product B has 3 different products lines but one of those 3 is similar to Product A. Thats the one's you compare.

You don't compare a Benz to a Yugo, you compare it to a BMW, Audi, etc of similar features
