But iPhone sales (two models) are compared with sales of 20+ handsets; compared with sales that include buy one get one free. I hear from the Android side it's not Android's fault iOS only comes on two models, so it's not really Apple's fault the Xoom didn't answer with anything comparable to the lower-end iPad.

I'm not saying it's fair and I've always made that arugment. I like the Xoom but hate the price. I wished it came in different model, one with a lower entry fee.

Because it should be compared to the 32GB Wifi+3G ipad which is similar in specs is $729. That's an Apple to Apple comparison.

You still not getting it. I paid $599, not $729. I know people that paid $499. They bought what they wanted, I bought what I wanted, and except for handling a few spreadsheets, it does what I want it to do. IF I were able to purchase the Xoom, it would cost me $800. So I can spend $599' which I did or hope that the Xoom comes out and spend $800, which I won't. We ARE allowed to compare the two. It's not Apples fault Motorola decided to try to throw a bunch of crap together, hope it works, and try to sell it for $800.

I'm not saying it's fair and I've always made that arugment. I like the IDEA of the Xoom but hate the price. I wished it came in different model, one with a lower entry fee.

Fixed that for you.
I knew someone would say that but my point is if Product A has one product line and Product B has 3 different products lines but one of those 3 is similar to Product A. Thats the one's you compare.

You don't compare a Benz to a Yugo, you compare it to a BMW, Audi, etc of similar features

Why not? Compare a Benz to any car. They both get you from A to B right ? Why buy a Benz when all you do is go three blocks to church and six blocks to the Piggly Wiggly as my grandmother did for many years. (She didn't drive on a road if the speed limit was over 35).

What does product A do ? What does product B do ? What are my wants and needs ? How much do I want to spend ? It's simple.

In california $800 dollars means $900 due to state taxes!

Delarware is 0 tax. Tax has nothing to do what we are talking about here. Ur fault that u live in CA. Ur state does not have highest taxes in the us, not even close.

It's reasonably priced considering it's improved specs and capabilities over the current iPad which ranges in prices $499-$829.

It's a high end tablet. The iPad, to be honest, is a bit limited. Lets see what the iPad 2 comes in at, and what it's specs are before we throw the Xoom under the bus.

Nope. We can already throw the Xoom under the bus because the Asus Transformer is almost identical 10" IPS, Tegra 2 and half the price of the Xoom.

You would have to be a moron to get the Xoom at $800.

I get what you're trying to say.

If you want compare can I play a video or open an app on the $499 the same way I can on a $800 one then sure compare away they both but when you're talking about comparing them hardware wise you can say I'm going to get an iPad for $499, that's is true but you're not going to get a 32GB wifi+3G iPad for $499, you're going to get pay $730.

Didn't need you to fix my sentence..

Not going to bother explaining the car comparison......

1. Motorola already confirmed that there will be wi-fi models.
2. Again 800 dollars is a lot of money, but this xoom is not that more expensive than iPad. But, I guess most of you are having a hard time understanding that 32GB iPad wifi+3G also costs 729 dollars. But, hey. W/e.

3. This info is coming from Verizon and it's people choice to choose wifi or 3G/4G model. If they desire to choose 3G/4G model, then expect a price tag like this because they actually costs money. LTE is something new and you will pay money for it.

iPad 2 will have similar Specs? Maybe, but there is also a chance that it won't like rumors saying it will have only megapixel camera. Xoom has 5 megapixel Camera.

Keep dreaming. These tablets don't come cheap, but they are not overpriced. Fine with me, if you cannot escape from that 499 dollars price tag, but you won't get Xoom 3G/4G model at 600 dollars. No way in hell with those specs like HDMI, 10.1 inch screen (That's bigger than iPad btw...), 5 megapixel and 2 mega on front with 32GB storage. iPad 2? Let' see it will have all that. Answer, No, it won't. It won't be LTE compatiable and it won't have HDMI output for sure. Rest is based on speculation.

First off, when did the idea of tablets turn into the same idea of the TV, "bigger is better." If the screen real estate isn't used efficiently, that .4 inch difference means nothing. And with the UI of iOS compared to honeycomb I truly think this will be the case.

Also, if the Xoom comes in a Wifi only option and the starting point is $800, wouldn't that mean the 32GB wifi only version is $800?? Which means, you are comparing a $600 32GB Wifi iPad to a $800 Wifi Xoom… And that is an iPad that has been out for 10 months or so, so you will be comparing this to an iPad 2 in another couple months.

More than you know

Actually, all vendors for Google are worried. Maybe not now, but when Oracle vs. Google goes to court. There are some findings of Google copying Java that belonged to Oracle. Google will have to owe a large sum of money I bet.

If the rumors are all true, an interesting direction taken by Motorola. Contrary to what people often claim, Apple was pretty aggressive pricing the iPad and it's pretty clear Motorola just couldn't match the low end iPad price. Thus they'll try to compete against the iPad with a high margin product in the upper segment of the market.

Even then, will people pay 10% more for a Motorola product than a comparable Apple product? I'm not asking for an internet person's opinion, but a layman's in which case the answer will probably be a no. On the other hand I suppose you could argue that if you're spending $700-800 for something like this that person will be tech savvy and thus will likely appreciate the added functionalities of the Xoom more. A plausible argument but I just don't think the market for an $800+ tablet is that big.

If anything though it does show how tough it is for others to match the low end iPad pricing. Even after all these months, we haven't seen a single company that tried to compete against the low end iPad at a similar price with similar quality and screen size except two oddballs: one upcoming product in NotionInk Adam and one past competitor in JooJoo.

This discussion reminds me a similar one about rumored high Samsung Galaxy Tab prices. Do not get confused. XOOM will be cheaper than similarly equipped iPad models. Apple is the only company that sticks with MSRP. Everything else sells for less. It's just different marketing.

How many $800 plus iPads did Apple sell?

NotionInk Adam is vaporware, and the JooJoo you are referring to sold 70 something devices worldwide BEFORE the iPad was available. The model they say they want to release this year has a whopping 4 gigs of storage and a lengthy 5 hour battery life.

I would hardly call those two competitors.

Remember, the low end iPad performs the same as the high end, you just get a little more storage and 3G. Someone has to come up with a complete tablet experience, that the buyer wants, to compete with the iPad. It's not just a high end or low end deal. Someone else says you have to compare the Xoom to a $729 iPad, but you don't, because Apple will sell a $499 and $599 iPad the does what a customer wants. That is the key, to compete at all levels and provide a positive user experience.

Edit: It looks like the ink will ship from the factory the 29 th.

Exactly and that's why I qualified them as "oddballs." They are interesting stuff but they weren't going to make a big dent in the market as a whole.

Agreed. I suspect that Motorola would love to compete on price and get more volume if it was possible but for now they have to cram in a few more features and play the high margin game simply because there's no way they can come even close to the iPad sales volume or pricing in the low end.

I wish they could have placed the headphone jack in a better spot. Top middle is an odd place to put it. Bottom left or right would have been preferred. I wish it was on the bottom on the iPad also. The iPod Touch does it right:)

Regardless of whether $800 is a good buy for the specs and features of this tablet, joe public is going to see "$800 for a tablet that does android" and pass. This will be a niche market for people who are willing to pay for the specs at that price. Sorry Motorola, it's just not going to be a huge seller.

To early to tell and impossible to gauge Motorola's pricing strategy at this point.

Xoom Wifi+ 3G =800 dollars
iPad Wifi+ 3G = 729 dollars

Given the fact that xoom has a lot of better specs than iPad with 2 cameras. There is no way anyone can claim that xoom is overpriced. It's not. If you were expecting it to be cheaper, perhaps, you were hoping. But, these companies are running for money and they have to make profits.

I wish you were right but nobody can go up against Apple with value for money being their main advantage. The Xoom can still fail despite having a huge performance advantage. Majority of Apple's customers don't buy what they think is the best product for their money, they buy it because they want an iPhone.... or iPad. More important factors be damned.

You have hit the nail on the head there. Isn't this what the term Sheeple was all about? And the dangerous advantage Apple have at the moment selling to the masses who don't really know much about the subject. A little like Sony with the Playstation had a few years ago, which amazingly Microsoft managed to break through sheer muscle and Sony delays

And best summed up by this video cartoon:
Note. very rude language towards the end of this clip....

Apparently, the copied Java code was in test case files that are not shipped in products. They also reportedly had their open software license header changed by someone before Google downloaded them... so Google would have had no idea they were under a different license.

This is a slur used by those too ignorant to actually figure out why Apple sells.

The sell well because they consistently deliver a better engineered experience. Something specsheet nerds can't seem to grasp. So the nerds sit around and whine about RDF, and weaker specs sheets. "but, it has a slower processor, it has less RAM, it has less MP in its camera, blah, blah, blah...". All the while ignoring the real difference.

Further debunking the sheeple nonsense is that Apple also releases duds and then they don't sell. Apple TV-1 is a prime recent example. Apple actually has to get it right to win.

iPad is selling like mad because they got it right. It was so refined, slick and fun to use that people could immediately understand how they could change their pattern of computer use to incorporate this new gadget and how they would enjoy the improved experience.

For any company to have a serious shot at taking some iPad market share, first they must at least come close to matching the experience. No one has come remotely close yet. All we have from Android so far are some video of a beta interface better suited to tablets. Second thing they must do is get close on pricing. The thing that matters least is the specsheet that nerds get so excited over.

Also, you must not leave out that fact that Apple is Cool and it's the make in vogue at the moment and this mean a lot, esp for young people, for whom brand and imagine is everything. It does not matter what quality your Trainers or T-shirt it, it it does not have the right brand name stamped on it.

Price is very important. In the company I work only myself and one other person has got an iPad, 3 people have iPhones, no-one has a macbook and no-one has a iMac. Basically they are just too expensive for many people.

Engadget have updated their report, now quoting a more reasonable price of $699. I'll have two!

No mention of the spec and whether variants will be offered.

You buy it! than you start looking for apps in the andriod market place and realize the apple apps are so much better and aready paid for.
