Nice opinions so far guys. Very valid and I am taking them into consideration when making my decision.
Yes $350 dollars may not break the bank but 2 view points here why pay more than you need to for something?
The 2nd viewpoint would be what if the next step up for multiple things we buy were $50 more or couple $100 more then it starts to add up a bit different. That how debt and living paycheck to paycheck starts by people over spending (more often than they need to).

The XR looks like it'll definitely cover bases the XS seems to have the creature comforts so to speak. I'll have to go back to the store and play with them a bit.

Personally I would buy the Max, assuming you can return it within two weeks. Give it a try. Or get the XR first, and if it's unsatisfactory, exchange it for the Max.

I have the 8+ and the Max and I use them both. Frankly, I honestly like them both very much, but they strike me as very different phones--that's my subjective impression of their fit and finish. If I had to give on up I would be hard pressed to decide which one to keep.

On thing I can say is that the battery life of the Max is significantly less than the 8+, but given my use scenario, not so wretched that I don't like to use it. Further, almost every possible thing is toggled "on" with the Max; I imagine that with a careful adjustment of the settings, battery life would improve a bit.

I guess at the end of the day you should be the phone which is best future-proofed, providing that your heart agrees.

The XR will be a size downgrade with the screen compared to the note 8. I say get the XS Max, OLED screen, thinner bezels, dual cameras.

But then the XS will be an even bigger size downgrade....The XR has a least the same point resolution than the XS Max (shows the same content) with a little smaller display and case. The price difference between the XR and XS Max is also a lot bigger....

The Note 8 has about the same weight and width than the XR but is a lot higher (12.5mm). The XS max is nearly the same size as the Note 8. The biggest jump in size is indeed to the XS, but that is a totally other category of phones in term of size...

My vote is XS. If coming from the N9 then you'll notice the lower resolution of the XR.

The Max is amazing but heavy and has no features to justify it's size as iOS is only enlarged with no extra features over XS. Of course if you watch alot of media and play games then Max would be a better choice.

The XS will feel small but maybe your ready for this as the N9 is not exactly one hand friendly. I have 7+ so logically the Max would be the right fit for me but I didn't like it's weight and the in hand feel personally.

XS is top of the line so go all in. Amazon UK are official resellers of Apple products now and have dropped the price of 256gb so deals are there.

So I am coming from a Note 8, it is a great phone and I love it. Hate to give it up actually.
Right now I am in the process of a decision between a 2018 MacBook Air (128gb) or the 2017 MB 12 Inch (256gb).

I have been looking at these phones and it seems to me the XR will suit my needs 100% seems some of the features are more convenience over anything and it is about a $300 savings.
However which ever equipment I do buy I want to keep for at least 2 years (if not 3), I am tired of buying this stuff every so often.
So should I go with the latest and greatest or should the XR suffice.

It is a tough call because I can live with the screen and 128gb should be enough on the phone, but I am wondering if the 3D Touch, OLED screen, and more memory is the better route to go...

Just looking for some feedback on these topics...
Thanks.
1. Keep the Note 8
2. Get the 2018 MacBook Air

If you currently have a fully functioning phone that you like, I don’t see why you should even change your phone. Save your money and wait for the 2019 iPhones instead.

Between the Xr and Xs I believe the Xr is the superior device in application and use. I know on paper the Xs is better, but I weight the battery life higher than anything else.

I when I bought the Xr the Xs was not even a consideration. It was hard to choose between the Xs Max and the Xr though because I used 3d touch a lot and I have a need for the 2x optical camera. After having the Xr for some time I am glad I did not spend the extra money on the Max like I almost did. The camera is limiting for some of the pictures, but based on the lighting it very well would have still been digital zoom. It also sound like the Xr might have better low light pictures from what others have said. I have not missed the 3d touch like I thought I would either. I am not knocking the Max it was a nice device I just did not care about the extras it had at the cost that was being asked. I really like the the size of the Xr best also.
Go to the store and play with both.

i literally came from the note 8 also.. XR will be perfect for you 110%

I get that, but I guess I give people the benefit of the doubt that a phone won’t take them into debt.

It's not the $350 that would put someone in debt. It's the train of thought. That anything can be purchased if you spread out daily/monthly payments over several years.

I should have clarified. It’s a dangerous train of thought to have on everything, but certain things like a phone are almost mandatory. Just give up your Starbucks once a week and that more than pays the difference.

XR doesn't make you miss your Note 8?

There is nothing on the XS Max that is mandatory over an XR other than a desire to have something that is slightly better on a spec sheet. They both essentially do the exact same thing and run the same software. If somebody is in a position where they have to give up something they enjoy consuming once a week in order to justify the extra expense, they are not in a position to be blowing £1100+ on a mobile phone in the first place. It’s a nice phone to have but is not essential and not massively superior over other options in the range.

The OP however wasn’t considering the XS Max and rather the XS and XR in any case. The price has also put them off like a lot of iPhone users here.

I was debating the same choice, and in the end, I decided to go with the XR. For me, it came down to one primary issue: battery life. The XR's battery life is really appealing to me. I'm aware of all of the other differences, and none mattered to me as much as this.

Bottom line: everyone's needs are different (and admittedly, mine are probably wildly different from most folks around here) but ultimately the XR ticks the right boxes for my requirements.

Great points. I may have to go the store and see if I can see the devices side by side.
(With my note in hand as well)
I spoke to a person about the XR, they described it as the "kiddie" version of the iPhone much like the 5c was back in the day I guess... lol

Coming from Samsung (best screens on any phone) I really think the XR will be jarring to you. I came from Samsung to iPhone and the 1080p 8+ I got took some getting used to.

It’s not jarring at all. Unless somebody really knows what to look for for disparity differences with OLED and LCD, it’s not vastly that much different in the average consumers eyes. Even if you read above comment in this thread, another member even mentioned that they also had a Note 8 and opted for the XR, and had no problem adjusting. It’s all user based perception.

I honestly think that a large part of the allure of the Xr is to fight back at Apple and it's exorbitant pricing...

Whether it's intentional or subconscious who's to say, but I strongly believe this train of thought is driving decision making of such said device.

If in fact this is the case, and I suspect it is... Kudos to you, whoever you may be.

***not to be "confused" with can't afford ***

That person clearly didn’t know an awful lot so I wouldn’t give any value to that advice whatsoever. Anybody comparing the XR to the 5C is most probably somebody fishing for a bit of attention. Have a proper look for yourself.

Based upon the opening post, I cannot answer the question or vote.
Do you have a way to demo any of these phones?
You need to try out the phones in the store, as the best fit is all over the place with regards to
budget, needs and quality.

Note 9 user here. Since you don't care about the downgrade in size, I'd go for the XS (not the max). Screen is lovely (since you are coming from a flagship sagging phone the XR is out of the equation) and you will surely like it a lot.

However, I completely share other people's opinion about the price... but it is what "apple community" says is the apple TAX. I'd wait for the new phones if I were you (or if I could) though. But if getting an iPhone asap is a must, go for the XS! ;)

For me the XR is the SUV under the iPhones. It is bigger, heavier und more "reduced" in some areas compared to the "luxury car" iPhones, but it is much more robust, last longer and brings you through every kind of terrain....

From a note 8? You'll probably find the XS too small, so if the XS Max isn't an option that alone should more or less decide the issue.
