Because I like the XS better.

I am quite happy with my decision and don’t need to justify it further.

If your economic false equivalency nonsense works for you, then fine. You are not me, however.

I don’t think that post was directed at you personally. It made a lot of sense but of course we all buy the best phone available for our tastes.

Both are compromised.
XR is missing 3d touch and has large bezels and low res screen.

Just a few points here, I don’t think the average consumer cares about 3D Touch as others do on here or even know to properly use it, the XR does not have large bezels (Try the iPhone 6 through 8 as an example
For larger bezels), and the displays looks just like all the other displays from Apple in the past, which doesn’t look hardly ‘Low res.’ The XR Display looks highly similar to the 8 display from my personal experience.

Picked up a nice blue hard silicon case on eBay, again I’m very happy with the XR.

Ok well let’s say large bezels in comparison to X/XS

Looks thicc. Nice tho.

Yeah, it’s a chunky bugger but the battery life is ridiculously good. Used it off charge from 10:50am yesterday and put it back on charge this morning at 6am with 14% remaining.

I have iphone 7. Happy with everything;)

the pirate bay

So was I until the Audio IC chip died and Apple wanted £309 for a replacement phone out of warranty because it’s unrepairable.

It is also a known issue with iPhone 7, it’s just down to pot luck if your device develops an issue. To be fair, I’d had my 7 since launch, it was time to change.

Not much larger ... another point people over exaggerate. The XS is hardly “bezelless”.

Coming from a Note I'd recommend the Xs as you'll be downgrading big on the screen. I came from Samsung also and their screens are great. The Xr was not a consideration for me. Apple is not going to use those screens going forward.

Xs is the better device for several reasons.

I LOVE my XR. I bought the Max and pretty immediately had headaches from the OLED (and that was my dream phone, so I wouldn’t have returned it otherwise). I thought I wouldn’t upgrade from my 8+ after that, but wound up going ahead and getting an XR at release, and I haven’t regretted it for a minute. It’s a great phone. For me, the size is near perfect (I find the X and XS a little small coming from + phones).

The battery almost always lasts me 2 full days, and I use my phone a lot. I don’t see a huge difference between my screen and my daughter’s on her XS when they are side by side; the display on the XR is great.

It may not be the top of the (Apple) line phone, but I think overall it’s the best value without a doubt.

Intellectually I understand this, but in practice I just don't see it. I mean, I do see the differences you're describing - but to my (admittedly subpar/old) eyes, I have to concentrate to see them, and ultimately those differences are really minor. To me.
I suppose that's fair.
Screen is a big deal for me and I was miffed when Apple made a big deal about 'Liquid Retina' display and slapped a screen that is inferior to the other iphones and pretty much all of the Android competition.

Have you used the XR?

I genuinely, having upgraded from a 7 and used the XR for four days, have zero issues with it. I find the furore online somewhat embarrassing; it’s not a bad display, at all.

Its not a bad display, just not a great one. Some of backlash comes from the idea that a late 2018 phone should at least have a display equal to, if not better, than whats come before it. The plus series has 1080p. We can already assume the XR2 will be 1080p as an “upgrade”.

I think a new XR would get OLED as an upgrade before a slightly higher-res LCD. But the point of XR is the lower price, so maybe the update cycle isn't that predictable.

After weighing all the pros and cons for my use case I bought a mint condition X on swappa. A few hours into using it I’m having headaches. So, I might have sensitivity to PWM on the OLED screen. I also discovered that “display zoom” is not available on the X. That is a feature that I have been using to make everything easier for my eyes.

If the headache turns out to be related to PWM then I’m going to buy the XR.

Thing is though, not all 1080p displays are great either. There’s a video on YouTube by Jon Morrison and he sits an iPhone XR beside a 1080p android phone and shows only the displays and runs the same 1080p video footage on both.

He then brings in strangers to look at them and decide which they liked best and which they thought was iPhone.

The results were surprising, everyone went for the XR saying it was the 1080p display, had better colours, better black levels, etc.

I really have been surprised by the “hate” towards this device, because it’s bloody fantastic. I love it, and I choose it over the XS because the screen was larger and the battery was said to be betters.

The difference per month in cost between the XS and XR was £2 ... TWO. And I still went for the XR. That’s my choice of course, but it’s not like I’m trying to justify having the “cheaper” phone. I could have got the XS no problem, but the XR ticked more boxes for me as an upgrading iPhone 7 user.

The XR is certainly the best new iPhone for what it offers. I had no real issues when I compared the screen either. It looks and feels like a well put together iPhone and has the premium feel we are all used to. If they still offer this variant at my next upgrade then I won’t even look at the XS variant.

Couldn't agree more. When you reached 40s, you knew basic phone is for calling, whatsapp, bank transaction, online shopping and scrolling your old friends status in social media. At that time, even iPhone 6 / 6s is still more than enough. You better spent your $$$ in car, house/apartment, travelling, investment or kids education.

1 - buy MacBook Pro 13 inch (entry level)
2 - buy iPhone XS

Reply back in 5 years time.

My dad is using an iPhone 5s and my mum an iPhone 6. Both around the 5 year mark in age and still working well.

They also use a Mac mini 2012, 6 years old now? Also still going strong.

Decisions are made with the information you have at the time. You may be wrong or you may be right. You won't know until after you pull the trigger.

And that is the point - the specs are a compromise to reduce costs and then what happens? They price it at 750. In the end, the value proposition is just not there.
For those who say it is a fair price, Apple wouldn't be dropping the prices if they did not need to..

It’s priced like iPhone 8 was last year which was nothing more than an iPhone 6 with a glass back and new internals. I don’t know what you’re comparing the price to, but I do think it’s fair.

Sales numbers and the subsequent drop in price would indicate otherwise

I said the point of XR was 'a lower price' which it has, it's cheaper than the XS. I think the XR is a great phone for replacing the iPhone 8 in the line-up and that they are priced similarly if you compare value.

iPhones have always been very expensive and prices keep increasing every year. I'm not defending that, I'm just defending the XR itself which is getting a lot of hate.

I can see how an SE, 6, 7 or 8 user would be happy but as a plus user the drop in resolution is noticeable to me. Everything else is great on XR. Well maybe not that bezel compared to XS but I'm fussy.

I used a 7 Plus for over a year and switched to XR which I’ve been using for two weeks now. I don’t notice the difference in PPI.
