iPhone XS Max XS max vs note 9

The last phone on earth I would buy is a Samsung, but given that Google just loves to snoop out data and sell it. I refuse to use anything Google. I don't use chrome, google maps or anything else those thieves offer up for free. However, there was a time when I did the Samsung Android things... laggy ass phones with no updates after one or maybe two at the most. Hell even the Note 9 shipped with the old version of Android. Typical Samsung! But hey.. choice is what makes the world go around. If you like Samsung and Galaxy Phones.. power to you! I'll hang with my iPhones even though I think they are overprice and that Apple as a company are some greedy dogs!

YouTube, GMail, or have never had an account with either.

Eh, while you wouldn’t want to do hours long work in a multi-window mode on a display of these sizes, it’s very handy for quick tasks and especially with two different apps where you are trying to reference different information to complete the same task.

I currently have both the Note9 and XS Max (yeah I know, gotta decide what I’m going to do with the Note), and just the other day I was streaming a football game in the native video player. This was an (illegal) stream from reddit, so not easily restarted if I was to exit. A buddy asked me if the Packers were winning. Without losing my feed I was able to pop up the score on another app using multi-window, grab the score, close it out and go full screen on my stream again. It’s small tasks like that, and things like balancing a budget, that make split-screen multitasking so beneficial.

I can understand not being interested in a device for your own personal use. Dismissing some of the more beautiful smartphone designs that come from the Android market as ‘remotes’ however, I cannot understand.

1. Its not really dismissing, it's just my opinion. Apple, imo, simply has the best looking smartphones to the point everything else is ugly to me lol. How beautiful my phone is, is actually a big deal to me despite how shallow it might sound to some people. I like beautiful phones and nothing touches Apple in that regard. But to the other point...

#2. Trust me I used to be big on android. My first smartphone ever was an android G1 or w.e. and it turned into a buggy mess 3 months in. I tried another one (cant remember the name right now) and same thing, buggy mess. Went to an iPhone and even thought it slowed down as the OS updated, It never lagged to the point of frustration that I would get on android devices. I personally converted my entire family to apple devices and they never went back. I never went back and honestly never will. But that's mostly because of point #1 :)

other than it can do more than ios?

those are great speeds. is that constant with your low 2 bar signal?

also the ui of both the screen shots look the same? unless you think the ability to have more notifications b/c of no notch is a bad thing....

Doing more doesn't mean it's better. I rather my phone do less and doing them better than having a phone that tries to do everything, but just ruins the overall UX.

Doesn't matter how many bars I get. I'm getting great speed and connection. :)

give me an example of ruined ux? other than the iphone's ugly notch taking up screen space in videos...

big difference from android to ios is you aren't forced to do anything and can turn it off or change it if it bothers you.

Why did you even buy the iPhone then? Why would anyone buy two Samsung and one Apple flagship in one year, especially if you were already happy with the former? That’s a lot of wasted money.

some people like tech and aren't closed minded. besides "wasted money" is relative to your bank account.

Android is a dumpster fire and I happily dumped my note 8 into my drawer after picking up my Max.

Most people don’t have a need to use multiple apps at the same time on their phone that often, let alone frequently enough to deem the feature a must have.

It’s a gimmick. Cool to see once and then never use again.

Same goes for the pen. I literally never took it out during the entire year that I had the note 8.

Android is an extremely sloppy OS that gets updates laughably late, runs like sludge and will forever be vulnerable to attack by nefarious parties.

There is no inter device continuity. Android wear is a total joke, it is essentially a beta product. Google just recently released a way of texting from your computer, it still relies entirely upon SMS, has none of the additional features that you’ll find in iMessage and it connects maybe 2 out of every 5 times you try to use it.

All the foregoing is before you even take into consideration the fact that Google is just downright creepy. They literally stalk the **** out of you. Everything you do is logged, everywhere you go is logged even if you take the SIM card out and put the phone in airplane mode.

That’s just disgusting.

Using Android phones is like using Windows, bloated, ugly, and pure crap. At least with iPhone, all my devices play nicely together and things work seamlessly well with each other, unlike Android where you need to find 3rd party apps just to get the same, and yet it still doesn't feel as nice.

I've had several Notes. Never touched the S-pen. Was not a useful feature for me.

It's immediately apparent within 5 minutes of picking up each device, the massive difference in polish and attention paid to user experience. The Samsung UI is disjointed, has clashing colors, fonts, themes, runs slower and has duplicate apps, weird pop-ups everywhere.

I value polish, fluidity and consistent long-term software support. Is the Note going to be supported 4 years from now (let alone with a great update) like the iPhone 6 just was?

If there wasn’t a delay in my Note 9 order that’s probably what I’d have now, and since I don’t see the value in having multiple smartphones I would have ran with it for the year. Idk how anybody can deny that the Note 9 is a beautiful piece of hardware; and it does things that an iPhone cannot. I’m not sure I’d say ‘more’ but definitely some different things.

However, the use of my phone, Apple Watch, and AirPods is amazing. So good that it makes me weary about trying to see if Samsung can replicate that experience. (Maybe they can, not sure) I do hope that Android phones in general are successful and give people what they are looking for.

Apple needs the competition!

What's everyone thoughts? I know this will probably end in a war but can anyone here really say the XS Max is better than the note? I've owned both since launch day and can honestly say the only thing about the iPhone that's better is the battery life. Other than that Note absolutely destroys it in every way.

Am I the only one that thinks this?

None is better than the other, it's all down to what YOU prefer. in another year you won't care about the note 9 or the xs max.

Do you care if the Sinclair Spectrum is better than the Commodore 64?.... Exactly, but the same thinking was around then too and fans of both machines bashing each other.

Use what YOU want to use, enjoy it, have great times and fun with it and understand not everyone is like YOU or uses things that YOU use or has the same opinions that YOU think.

When YOU understand this, YOU will realise how unimportant and irrelevant your OP is and how quick this thread will be forgotten.

There are no good watches at all that support android besides the gear s3.

Gear s3/galaxy watch is not android wear. The software on the gear is probably the worse of the bunch. Barely any apps. Bixby is like siri, still sucks compared to Google assistant.

Best part about galaxy watch is its rugged and battery life is amazing. I have aod turned on and it'll last me 3 full days of use. Stand by is great too. Other than that, it doesn't compare to an android watch or apple watch.

It depends on what you want. If you prefer iOS then the max is the better phone. However if you don’t have a preference for iOS then the note 9 might be the better phone in terms of features and specs.

Android isn’t laggy anymore and is very stable. I agree that the iPhone is the best looking phone but there are lots of good looking android phones too. I guess when we are paying over a grand for our phones they better look good.

According to FFR the note 9 is outdated and not worthy to be mentioned in the same conversation as the iPhone max. I was a longtime android user who got my first iPhone last year. People who have not used android in a few years or never at all seem to think that android is for poor people or kids and that the OS is a joke full of hackers and viruses. It’s not even worth my time trying to convince anyone on here who is a die hard apple apologist that android is actually superior to apple in many ways.

One plus 6
Lg v30
Note 9
S9/+
Pixel 2/xl
P20 pro

All of these phones are very impressive in different ways. I still am sticking with my iPhone due to the smoothness and Apple Watch support. So many people immediately just dismiss android and have NO clue what they are talking about it. All they know is it doesn’t run iOS so it must be crap. To be honest, the one plus 6 and the 6t coming up will provide as good or better experience than a max. They start at $569. Yeah, you will not be as safe and it’s not as fluid as iOS, but $569 is a lot less than $1099+ the last time I checked. The note 9 has more features than any phone ever made. Apple apologists are an odd bunch. They not only dismiss android but actually openly hope android phones fail. Very weird to me.
Excluding things like ecosystem, support and OS the note 9 is the better phone. It’s better value for money and has a lot of advanced features. After the iPhone keynote I did consider the note 9. However the max won out because of my heavy integration into the Apple ecosystem and my overall preference for iOS. There’s nothing wrong with android but I prefer iOS. Also most of the advanced features on the note I wouldn’t really use, although they are useful for a lot of people.

You find yourself using the split screen more than you realise.

Sometimes it's so useful typing an email and having a PDF to reference on the other side of the screen.

It's also great for putting on football bets at the weekend. League tables one side, betting slip on the other!

Ya honestly after using the note and s9 for a year prior to this I pick up an iPhone and am bored almost instantly.
Same here why is that ?
I’ll be fair when I say the XsMAX is a great device it does everything well. Emails and Texting are better on iOS.
But notifications being in a separate hidden page and no notification bar across the top. No activity LED. I can go one and on.
Fortunately I may personally trade my coworker for her Note 9 and call it a day. We both have Sprint. But I think Sprint contract rules state you must have the phone on your account for the contract period.

some people like tech and aren't closed minded. besides "wasted money" is relative to your bank account.

I get being open minded, but to me that means I buy an iPhone this year, maybe I buy a Note next year or even in a couple of years, not buying multiple flagships with a matter of months. And wasted money is wasted money. If you light your cigars with dollar bills just because you’re a billionaire that’s still a waste. In fact, some of the wealthiest people in the world are the most fiscally conscious. That’s how they acquire and keep wealth. The people who make a show of throwing money around often aren’t as wealthy as they want people to think they are, or it ends up not lasting.

I'll never understand the logic behind threads enticing people into a debate about which is the best phone. It's all subjective and largely down to personal preference or bias. Alot of people say they aren't biased, but they are, myself included.

There is no such thing as a better or worse phone. Simple as that.

I have had a string of iOS and Android devices over the years, I'm a software test engineer for a large company so I get to play with the latest devices which I'm very fortunate to be able to do.

I had a Note 9 for a week and gave it back, this was comparing it to my X not the Max.

What I liked:
  • S Pen - I actually used this more than I expected
  • That screen
  • Dark Pixelized theme
  • Ability to browse the file system and sideload apps
  • Fast charging out of the box
  • Android Auto in my opinion is leagues above CarPlay
So why did I get rid of it? I'd be a liar if I said it had nothing to do with my love of iOS because of course that was a factor, I have the Apple Watch, iPad and Apple TV so the ecosystem integration is very important to me.

That said, the Note 9 came the closest yet to converting me back to Android. But for me the biggest let down was the camera system. The rear camera when testing side by side to my X was no contest. Sure there was more details in the zoomed in shots but the overall balance of the images was terrible. I tried Pro mode, turning off HDR, everything you can think of but the inconsistency of the images was very irritating, something the X got much better everytime. Alot of the pics were blown out and way over processed compared to the X. I showed them to my wife who is about as uninterested in phones as can be and she even commented.

The selfie camera was the worst, so blown out and over exposed it wasn't even usable half the time. My 4yo grand daughter wanted a selfie and her reaction to seeing herself was "Ewwww" due to how overblown the image came out.

Nothing I did got the images to be consistent. Also recorded videos had some wavy banding on the edges when played back, something the Note 8 also suffered as well as the S8 I had.

For me, the XS Max camera system is a marked improvement and gives much better consistent results than the Note 9.

Ultimately it doesn't really matter what i think, I went with my head (and partly my heart) and chose the best phone, FOR ME. That's all that really matters.

Better is subjective and that depends on the user.

From a hardware perspective the iPhone max is superior to the noté 9 and not by a small margin.

Judging from posters on this board, some YouTube personalities, and even android central, it would seem that the iPhone Xs max have caused quite a stir. There seems to be evidence of users either upgrading to the Xs max from a note 9 or using it as an additional phone.

That might be difficult for some note 9 users to accept but it is what it is.

How much experience do you have hands on with the note 9?

That seems hyperbolic.

From a hardware perspective the note 9 is outdated compared to the iPhone Xs max, Additional ram and a larger battery will not negate the facts surrounding the note 9s hardware compared to the iPhone X’s max

This is a bit hypocritical to say the least. You feel that android is superior yet you purchased an iPhone?

And started discussing android vs iOS.

As a WHOLE, apple is superior. But it’s not by a landslide. Android owns apple in several different ways.

current Note 8 user debating whether to come back to iphone for the XS Max. I actually use the picture in picture mode of youtube all the time on my note 8 so I can do other things whilst watching a youbtube vid. I assume the iphone doesn't have that? the multitasking capabilities of the note 8 are actually really useful and I use them more than I would expect to

But that is an android to iOS comparison and depending entirely on the user their needs and their place in each respective ecosystem.

But the title of this thread is note 9 vs iPhone Xs max and my post is centered around hardware.

And from a hardware perspective it pretty cut and dry.
