I'll never understand the logic behind threads enticing people into a debate about which is the best phone. It's all subjective and largely down to personal preference or bias. Alot of people say they aren't biased, but they are, myself included.
There is no such thing as a better or worse phone. Simple as that.
I have had a string of iOS and Android devices over the years, I'm a software test engineer for a large company so I get to play with the latest devices which I'm very fortunate to be able to do.
I had a Note 9 for a week and gave it back, this was comparing it to my X not the Max.
What I liked:
- S Pen - I actually used this more than I expected
- That screen
- Dark Pixelized theme
- Ability to browse the file system and sideload apps
- Fast charging out of the box
- Android Auto in my opinion is leagues above CarPlay
So why did I get rid of it? I'd be a liar if I said it had nothing to do with my love of iOS because of course that was a factor, I have the Apple Watch, iPad and Apple TV so the ecosystem integration is very important to me.
That said, the Note 9 came the closest yet to converting me back to Android. But for me the biggest let down was the camera system. The rear camera when testing side by side to my X was no contest. Sure there was more details in the zoomed in shots but the overall balance of the images was terrible. I tried Pro mode, turning off HDR, everything you can think of but the inconsistency of the images was very irritating, something the X got much better everytime. Alot of the pics were blown out and way over processed compared to the X. I showed them to my wife who is about as uninterested in phones as can be and she even commented.
The selfie camera was the worst, so blown out and over exposed it wasn't even usable half the time. My 4yo grand daughter wanted a selfie and her reaction to seeing herself was "Ewwww" due to how overblown the image came out.
Nothing I did got the images to be consistent. Also recorded videos had some wavy banding on the edges when played back, something the Note 8 also suffered as well as the S8 I had.
For me, the XS Max camera system is a marked improvement and gives much better consistent results than the Note 9.
Ultimately it doesn't really matter what i think, I went with my head (and partly my heart) and chose the best phone, FOR ME. That's all that really matters.
