Yahoo is utter pants and Apple would be silly to go down this route. Google search is pretty much the standard, so please Apple lets keep the court room fall outs away from us, the people who buy your products. Google is just fine for searching thank you and Yahoo has been rubbish since the early part of last decade.

If it comes true, the blow will be HUGE for google

Why? Cause they can't serve their ads ;) ?

I think it would suck for us to be honest. I stopped using yahoo years ago, last thing I would want is to be forced to use them again.

Why does Yahoo! still exist?

I have been surprised at how well they still seem to be doing. There was never anything wrong with yahoo mail yet I moved over to google years ago just to keep everything simple. I know some people use whatever they have out of habit like old e-mail address with numbers and underscores.....hate underscores.

Funny, I'd have to respond "how can someone believe in this crap" as well.

Because I used mp3 players, phones, tablets, computers and operative systems before trying Apple's alternatives. Didn't you?

I find spotlight great, iTunes and the Store are great, the Mac App Store, most of their apps, etc.

I also have seen Apple entering categories that nobody thought possible, because they were 10 years behind.

I find Apple's software to be better (for me, my needs) than all of Google's software. Well, Google is a C company in software compared to the company that makes OS X, iOS, Final Cut, Logic, Aperture, iWork, Mainstage, iLife, Safari, all of those built in apps, and clearly can rival Google in services.

In 2010, Apple had 0 useful services. Today, those services are very close to surpass (some already did) everything google can offer, be it in quality or usage. Those billions and billions invested in huge datacenters will also start to pay off.

All of that learning is necessary for something like Search. But I agree that Google dominates the game, but don't you think that Apple has to give a serious try? Like I said, look at spotlight. Isn't it great, already? Do you really think that they will leave such a crucial part of the experience to their rival?

Apple has the foundation and the talent. Even if Google search by itself would still kick Apple's product, the experience could still be better.

I'm ok with that. Buying wolfram alpha is a nice start :)

I have an immense dislike for Google and try to avoid their products wherever possible, but Google Search is without a doubt the best search engine.

Apple shouldn't change to a lesser search engine as it's default. It won't be 'damaging', but it will be annoying for the general population. I tried Yahoo! for two weeks and hated it - searching for News articles especially sucks.

I don't know anybody (and I know a lot of iPhone users) that use Siri - which might partly explain why they get away with Yahoo being the provider.

If they make Yahoo the default, then if it isn't easy to change, people may well start abandoning iOS.

Apple is going to introduce Spotlight web search service soon.

Ive: "We think search is an experience. It is not about generating lot of results, its about generating the right results. True search is not about the absence of results its about injecting ads, and bringing revenue to the results"

fixed it for ya :D

I would be happy. My business ranks between 1-3 for major keywords via yahoo and bing. While googles crazy backlink and other algorithms kill my site.

I would love to be able to use DuckDuckGo as the default browser.

Can I hear an Amen to that?! AMEN!

I don't trust Google further than I can throw it, and I don't think that their mobile search is great. I hate searching for images on the iPhone. For these reasons, I am not opposed to switching to Yahoo... But DuckDuckGo would be pretty awesome as an alternative.

Try iCab Mobile.

Ugh, I hope not, I'm not a fan of Yahoo. I was surprised to read though Siri uses Bing for searches.

I'm pretty impartial, especially on something at a mobile level. I only ever search for dozens of things when I'm at a desktop - and Google's desktop search is an awful resource hog these days. Yahoo's is a lot more simplistic and gives you more to the point information. On a mobile level I really don't see it being that much of a difference, and if you don't want it, just change it back to Google.

Really struggling to see what the fuss is about.

Yahoo's search engine is crappy, nothing compared to that of Google's.

Does anyone really think Yahoo will persuade Apple to do this? Sure it's good gossip and a good "get" for re/code but the chances of it happening are slim to none IMO.

I'd say its viable, remember Apple would love to move away from google's services and if this is a good alternative (in their eyes) then yeah its possible, especially if Mayer provides some financial incentives.

Yahoo are bleeding money and regardless of these internal projects they cannot compete with Google. I don't use Yahoo as a default search engine and I certainly don't want them on my iPhone or iPad!

If Apple did this it would be a bad move for consumers, if so then what, Mac default engine?

Apple should go with something like DuckDuckGo, but then they'd probably ruin its whole purpose.

Right. After reading the comments here the consensus seems to be: Google Search is best in terms of quality. The downside is that Google has ads, user tracking and lack of privacy.

Simple, if Apple wants to replace Google they need to provide something that removes Google's weaknesses. Search with no ads whatsoever and no user tracking. Then people will consider it.
