I guess comparing LCD to OLED is silly. XR vs Mini

Looks the same as mine. Maybe my expectations just need to be tempered?? LCD is brighter than OLED after all??

So when I first got my 12PM I thought it was yellow. Disabling true tone definitely helped, but side by side with my 11PM it still looked yellow. Today though, I compared again and it looks pretty close, the 12PM definitely not quite as bright and maybe a smidge dingy. Also I confirmed my 12PM does have the green flickering on the pure black video test.

I wanted to put some data to this question.

Using sRGB target, D65:
My 11PM measured 6750k with an avg ΔE 1.1, max ΔE 2

11pm sRGB D65 6750K.png

My 12PM measured 6520k with an avg ΔE 1, max ΔE 1.9. We can see the grays on the 12PM have greater ΔE, especially the dark grays, compared with the 11PM ΔE around the same color bands. This lines up with the slight tinge, especially when dark. So no, you aern't crazy if you see this. But overall, the 12PM display maybe appears slightly more even in regards to ΔE across the board compared to 11PM?

So this reflects the slightly warmer tone the 12PM has for me, but I found both phones to have surprisingly tight calibration from the factory. Don't forget to disable night-shift as I forgot the first time and it also made a difference.

So I went to my local Apple store and the doorman had the audacity to say that they load the display phones with an app to make it look good for their in-store lighting and no matter which I look at my phone will look worse.

Coming from a 6s plus I can't help but look at my screen and it looks like it's been soaking in cigarette water.

I visited two Best Buys and one Apple store, looked at 5 Pro max's total. 2 were similar to mine but maybe slightly more neutral. 3 were noticeably more warmer and dimmer. The two that were good were also a little dimmer than mine at max brightness????

I don't know what to think, i think it's a combo of slightly yellow screen + not knowing what to expect from OLED. My 6s plus was perfect.

I very much doubt it.

My two 12 pro max , the left one(gold) is more yellowing than the right one(graphite). Very noticeable
Got my 2nd Graphite 12 Pro Max (Left) and compare to the 12 Pro(right) still show slightly yellowing . I will have to accept this now otherwise the lottery will go on and on . Never compare the 12s to X or Xs, it will make it more noticeable and no matter how many phones you replaced it is just the natural of 12 I guess.

Got one on launch day. Screen good. Dust in camera lense. Got another one today. Bottom 1/3 of screen goes red in minimum brightness. Went to apple store to get it replaced and new phone bottom 1/3 goes red again

Received my 12PM which is not tooo bad, but it has a slight yellow tint and the homescreen looks a bit washed out compared to my other devices...
what I would love to understand , are there units which are actually good and therefore should I start the lottery or just be fine with mine ?
is the normal 12 usually fine ?
thank you

This makes me wonder whether there's actually a problem with the screens this year or not. I do think true tone makes my 12PM crazy yellow.

Like others have said, I wonder whether there are good units out there. So far I have not seen any pictures of any good units on any of the 12s.

For anyone getting their hopes up that this will be fixed by a software update, don't. They might fix the aggressiveness of true tone, but as far as the general yellow tint goes, it's clearly a hardware problem.
There seem to be multiple issues...Having read this whole thread these seem to be the most common:

  1. Slight yellow tint, warmer whites (most cases I would say)
  2. Piss yellow with lower contrast and brightness, greys do not look good
  3. Blacks are not true blacks when low brightness
  4. Bad color shift depending on viewing angle
  5. Uneven screen color
Some people might have more than one of these at the same time.
If you only have #1 I would not play the screen lottery.. On the other hand I find that 2-3. are not acceptable and I would do a return. 4-5 depends on the intensity of the problem.

My iPhone 12 Pro falls in category one, slightly warmer than my X but I can live with it since it's the only noticeable difference from my (very good) X screen.

Nah, my mini is way brighter than the XR.
Thanks, yeah I thought so too. I have a new mini coming today and I’m crossing my fingers that this one will be better. Drives me crazy, and aside from the Lock Screen and screen issues, I frickin love this phone!

Hey,

So I just want to give you guys an update what I did.

Went to the apple store closest to me. Checked out 3-4 iphone 12 pro max and did the same settings.

Either the screens are done this way or something I missed. Anyway, I have slight yellow tint compared to my wife's iphoen 11, my work phone iphone 8+ and another iphone 6+. So I was not quite happy with the screen if you compare them.

Anyway, back to apple store ->

I went in to see a genius or what they call them.

She was very helpful and pulled out her 12 PM and we compared. Her screen was the same yellow as mine and I only had the 8+ to show her the difference.

Walked around the store and did the same comparison with the ones in store.

What i noticed is that all of the screens differ slightly. Mine where sometimes more blue/white and sometimes more yellow.

The apple genius told me that she can't do anything to replace it at the moment as her phone and my phone was almost identical. Due to OLED vs LCD there bound to be some difference.

However, she told me that if apple do come up with a replacement program then there is no issue replacing the screens... so... we need to make more sound about this issue in order to get apple to comment on this.

I think I might settle with what i got since it's not too bad but more of something OCD bothering me. Day to day use doesn't bother me.

Editing photo however might bother me.. i'll see what i'll do.

Overall really satisfied with camera, battery, snappiness of the phone. Oh wow, we got widgets on ios now (i'm switching over from android) so that's a plus.

Notch is still something that would be nice to have a smaller but it's alright..

I'll probably still follow this post and see if some people actually post flawless iphone 12 screens without tint or any fault.

If not, i might go as Myllian said above. That either go with the lottery or keep it for now. I'm keeping mine for now :)

I was curious and just compared my new iPhone 12 Pro Max with my iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 6s. Out of those, I would say the iPhone 6s got the worst screen. The 7 Plus is very bright and white but I wouldn't even go as far as saying that my iPhone 12 Pro Max screen is "yellow", its just somewhat dimmer. However, isn't this to be expected with an OLED screen? I'll also compare it to my XS Max later, I gave that one to my bf. I personally prefer the color of the 12 Pro Max. The 7 Plus might be brighter but it looks so deadly "white". Now the 6s is what I would actually call yellow.ish

I guess I’m one of the few who doesn’t really give a **** about a slight yellow tint (maybe because my phone isn’t that bad so I don’t care much).

If it bothers you, ask for a replacement until you find one that suits your needs.

I remember returning 4-5 5SEs because i thought the cameras lens rattle (floating ISC) was a flaw. Never again.

I’ll enjoy my phone unless there is a glaring issue which this doesn’t seem to be. (Again, maybe I’m just lucky)

Decided to order another Mini, since my eyes just can't seem to get used to the screen.

Hopefully that one will be more pleasing to my eyes.

Should be here tomorrow... looks like they got plenty of stock.

That is fancy, but I dont understand anything about it. Can that be adjusted via an update?

I never ended up getting one that didn't rattle. Went through 3 and gave up
